South East busway is backed up to well into the tunnel between south bank and mater hill.  Possibly further.   Most buses seemed fairly empty, probably mass exodus to rail at south bank.

Westside and Park Ridge industrial action delays - Tuesday 14 February

We have been advised of some potential impacts to Westside and Park Ridge bus services on Tuesday 14 February. These impacts are part of an industrial dispute between Bus Queensland drivers and their employer.

Service delays and/or service cancelations may occur between 4am and 10am on Tuesday 14 February. Residual delays after 10am are also possible.

Additionally, bus drivers participating in this action may be wearing Transport Workers Union branded clothing, displaying messaging about ongoing negotiations and not collecting fares.
What you should do

Please avoid any unnecessary travel on Westside and Park Ridge bus services on the morning of Tuesday 14 February.

If you do need to travel, plan your journey ahead of time and allow extra travel time to reach your destination.
School services

School bus services will be prioritised to minimise disruptions to students however there may be some service delays and/or cancellations.

Students who catch urban bus services to travel to school may be affected by the planned action.

If you, or your child catches a Westside or Park Ridge operated school bus service, you might like to consider alternative travel arrangements where possible.

TransLink should be stating the real reason for the above service cancellations ' industrial action '  NOT  ' operational issue '.

I have contacted the Queensland Times and alerted them to today's disruptions and cause.

Thanks for the lack of pro-active advice TransLink < really hopeless these days hey?

No mention  on Twitter of the industrial action.

Queensland Times --> Commuter pain as Ipswich bus services cancelled

QuoteBUS Services across Ipswich have been cancelled this morning due to an industrial dispute with more commuter pain on the way.

In a release on Friday, Translink said the disruptions would impact the Westside and Park Ridge services and were due to "an industrial dispute between Bus Queensland drivers and their employer".

Service delays and cancellations were slated to occur between 4am and 10am today although Translink warned that "residual delays after 10am are also possible".

"Additionally, bus drivers participating in this action may be wearing Transport Workers Union branded clothing, displaying messaging about ongoing negotiations and not collecting fares," the Translink release said.

So far at least six services in Ipswich have been cancelled, from a wide variety of stops, including Orion Springfield Central, Redbank bus station, USQ Ipswich and the Bell Street Interchange.

Most of the cancellations have left commuters waiting half an hour for the next bus.

Translink said to "avoid any unnecessary travel on Westside and Park Ridge bus services" or factor in time delays.

In its service updates Translink said the cancellations were "due to an operational issue" but Rail Back on Track's Robert Dow said more accurate information was needed to alert commuters.

"A lot of people will have been jigged around," he said.

"To say they have been cancelled 'due to an operational issue' is not of any comfort to those stranded at bus stops.

"Rather than an 'operational issue' Translink should be saying it is due to industrial action.

"If they were correctly advising people it is industrial action then people might make alternative travel arrangements under those circumstances.

"People depend on the buses to get to work, to school, university or get connecting services.

"The (8.05am) 522 has been pulled and that is an important bus because it is a feeder bus to Springfield Central."

Translink, in its release on Friday , said "school bus services will be prioritised to minimise disruptions to students however there may be some service delays and/or cancellations".

"Students who catch urban bus services to travel to school may be affected by the planned action."

Shameful!  Why won't Queensland transport authorities level with commuters?  We have this 'operational issue' nonsense and the failure to come clean ion NGR problems.  No-one yet learned from Strachan Inquiry findings about people hiding stuff.  Big secrecy to cover the 'clusterfuk'.

A measure of the contempt TransLink et al has for the public.  Queensland is very secretive compared to other states of the Oz land.

Yesterday afternoon, the delays on Coro drive for buses in service were ballooning up to the 2 hour mark.
The Network Co-ordination Centre ( Bus Control ) were asking drivers who were passing Indooroopilly or Toowong to advise passengers that they may want to consider changing to a train for a quicker trip to the City !
By 7pm, the delay was still over 30 minutes on Coro drive.

Similar situation last week, with asking pax to change to a train.

3.36pm route 545 outbound bus cancelled Garden City - Woodridge station

The 3.36pm route 545 outbound bus is cancelled between Garden City and Woodridge station due to an operational issue. The next outbound route 545 bus departs Garden City Shopping Centre interchange at 4.06pm

Once again, poor frequency in a highly utilised route (at this time of day at least) results in a one hour gap between services.  Unacceptable TransLink.

Long delays on Coro Dr again yesterday (70 mins according to TL Facebook https://www.facebook.com/TransLinkQLD/posts/1829188400440550

Once again demonstrating why there needs to be decent interchange at Indooroopilly station, so passengers can avoid this nightmare.

Central-Indooroopilly by rail is 14 minutes all stops/10 minute express. Either way far superior than 70 minutes+ in a bus.

Of course, the other issue is that the train might randomly decide not to show up and the next one will be a sardine can.

It wouldn't be TransLink's decision (they don't make day of operations decisions), but the bus company out there who is contracted to TransLink, TransDev DSL.  I've lived out here for 20 years on and off, and the local operator is generally pretty good overall.

Just as a side note - the term 'customer' for public transport is really annoying and not quite correct in my eyes.  Those catching public transport will always be 'passengers' or 'pax', but that's just me.

those massive delays also have a huge flow-on  effect for buses returning to the cbd to do an outbound peak run.....yesterday there was a report of a person being unable to board the 100 route for well over 30 minutes @southbank....

This also has a flow-on effect to whatever that bus is scheduled to do for the rest of its run.

For example, in the peaks inbound 412s can go on to form other outbound western suburbs routes, which then do another inbound run. In turn, this can have an effect on routes which don't go anywhere near the CBD - 428s, 451/452, 414s etc. Another example which comes to mind was a 411 run sheet I managed to see while sitting in the front seat of the bus. This particular 411 then ran a 175 to Garden City, a 180 back, then a different 4xx before running a 428 (I think). I'm not sure how common this is, but it's just an illustration of how delays in one section of the network can propagate across the entire network within a few hours.

In turn, this causes heavier loadings on the remaining services which have been managing to run on time because their roster has managed to avoid a Coro Dr run, which delays those services as well. And on a bad day, Coro Drive backs up Gailey Rd & Swann Rd to past the Fiveways, Moggill Rd backs up to past BBC, and around Indro gets a lot worse too.

Whenever you have days like these, the road & bus network can get very ugly. The only saviour is the railway line & CityCycle, or else it's faster to walk.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?
