Focus Transport --> Sales of Electric ADL/BYD Vehicles Reach 100

QuoteAlexander Dennis Limited (ADL) and BYD Europe have jointly announced that the companies' electric vehicle partnership, which delivers the leading UK electric bus, has already topped 100 double deck bus sales.
ADL is a subsidiary of NFI Group Inc. (NFI), one of the world's largest independent global bus manufacturers and BYD is a global leader in batteries and electric buses.

The news comes as BYD ADL receives another significant fleet order for its 100% emissions-free electric double deck Enviro400EV with National Express confirming 19 vehicles for its West Midlands bus operation in Birmingham.

These impressive figures for BYD ADL's double deck include significant fleet deals with some of the UK's major bus operators including Metroline, Stagecoach, National Express and RATP Dev London.

The BYD ADL partnership has seen the move to electric mobility within the passenger transport sector gathering pace over the past 12 months as more and more operators realise the operational benefits of combining ADL's stylish and comfortable bus design with 100% emissions-free, pure-electric operation.

Importantly, BYD designs and installs charging infrastructure systems, to provide its customers with a complete one-stop-shop solution to fleet electrification.

37 vehicles on programmed delivery to Metroline for service on TfL's Route 43 (Friern Barnet to London Bridge)

32 for Stagecoach Manchester scheduled for Q4 2019 (routes including Manchester City Centre, Piccadilly Gardens and Manchester Airport)

29 for RATP Dev London in Q1 2020 for use on TfL's Route 94 (Acton Green to Piccadilly Circus)

19 for National Express West Midlands for operation in Birmingham, delivery planned for Q1 2020

"This is a notable achievement by the BYD ADL team in the UK, underlining the strength and depth of the partnership," said Arthur Whiteside, Managing Director, UK Sales at ADL, "We have achieved significant market penetration in just three years, while the uptake for the Enviro400EV has been extremely encouraging since we started production in February.

The move to electrification is well underway and we're pleased to be leading the charge. Operators appreciate the significant benefits the Enviro400EV offers – which combines 100% emission-free operations with the comfort, style and safety that make the Enviro400 the UK's favourite double deck bus."

"We see the demand for full electric mobility only increasing," added Frank Thorpe, Managing Director at BYD (UK), "and for two good reasons – public demand and fleet productivity. An increasingly well-educated public is calling for a sustainable future and zero-emissions public transport can play a key role in helping people switch to an energy-saving mindset.

Pure electric operation is having a truly dramatic impact on air quality in our towns and cities, and that's good news for everyone.

"For operators," he went on, "electric mobility offers long-term productivity gains for scheduled-service bus fleets, regardless of their size, as proven by public transport operators right across Europe. We look forward to engaging further with UK operators in our mission to bring 100% emissions-free mobility to our streets."

I love these electric trolley buses in San Francisco.  I have actually been on them a while back so much torque and power on the hills. Very quiet inside. Plus zero local emissions. Imagine if they had dirty diesel buses running up and down those hills.

I actually rode Route 100 for nearly its whole length when I was over there in May (I was staying a bit further east of the eastern terminus).

In Brisbane terms this would be something like the 590 or 369 but more frequent.

Couriermail --> Electric buses soon to launch in Brisbane as council opens tender

QuoteBRISBANE commuters are one step closer to travelling in electric buses around town.

Brisbane City Council have invited tenders to help roll out the city's first electric bus trial.

The electric buses will be trialled on the City Loop service which stops at popular sights in the CBD including the Botanic Gardens, Queen Street Mall, Eagle St Pier and QUT.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said electric buses were part of his vision to create a "clean and green" Brisbane while improving the city's transport network.

"An electric bus will be a great addition to our city and will open up our roadways by increasing transport choice and reducing congestion.

"As well as improving commute times and easing congestion, electric buses have zero tailpipe emissions, which is something I can't wait to see running on our streets," Cr Schrinner said.

Brisbane City Council have budgeted $316,000 for the initial tender and $1.26 million in capital in 2020.

Council are now seeking tenders from national and international suppliers to provide technical, engineering and maintenance support for the electric bus trial, with a tender to be awarded next year.

Cr Schrinner said: "Brisbane is the best city in the world and it keeps getting better and my vision for Brisbane includes great infrastructure projects and more clean and green initiatives.

"It's an exciting time for our city and the chosen supplier will assist Brisbane City Council in deciding the future of electric buses on the city's transport network."

The electric bus tender comes just weeks ahead of a driverless electric bus trial which is set to launch in Karragarra Island in Moreton Bay.

Busnews.com.au---->IVECO 18-METRE ELECTRIC BUS DEBUTS AT BUSWORLD 2019

QuoteIVECO 18-METRE ELECTRIC BUS DEBUTS AT BUSWORLD 2019

OCTOBER 18, 2019

AN 18-METRE articulated e-bus - and a special touring-spec minibus - have spearheaded Iveco Bus's latest range unveiled at Busworld 2019, recently.

In response to the ever-emerging public transport fields of electro-mobility and on-demand bus transport, commercial vehicle manufacturer Iveco has launched the Iveco Bus E-Way – essentially the non-trolleybus version of the award-winning 18-metre Crealis – plus new minibus versions of its Daily van range lead by the Daily Tourys.

As per the E-Way, with the transport industry's energy transition accelerating, electro-mobility is entering a new phase as a high-volume market, explains Iveco. For this reason, the company is taking another important step to provide its customers with a complete and flexible electro-mobility offer and unveiled the brand-new E-Way electric bus, it states.

HEULIEZ AND ELECTRO-MOBILITY

The E-Way has been produced by Heuliez Bus, a French limited company formed in 1980 that's fully owned by CNH Industrial, of which Iveco Bus is a subsidiary.

As Iveco Bus explains, electro-mobility is in "Heuliez DNA" as it has a history of, "...leading the way with generations of trolleybuses and full-hybrid buses."

"Long ago – before the introduction of Euro 6 bus generations – it transformed its industrial footprint to incorporate alternative traction buses in full production," the company explained.

"Its focus on electro-mobility extends to its test track, which is equipped with different charging systems.

Designed to suit every need, the Iveco-Heuliez E-Way is available in three lengths – 9.5m, 12m and 18m - with a choice of overnight slow charging or fast charging using a pantograph.

Flexibility is pushed to its maximum with a choice of number of batteries, which means the vehicle can match exactly the customer's specific autonomy requirements and doesn't have to carry extra weight, losing passenger capacity, Iveco explains.

E-WAY 18-METRE

The E-Way offers a, "...supremely comfortable experience for both drivers and passengers with no vibrations and smooth acceleration and a spacious, well-designed interior," according to Iveco Bus.

Different levels of interior and exterior customisation are available, with a choice of materials and custom-made arrangements of the passenger compartment, it explains.

The E-Way, "...creates the conditions for well-being and conviviality of the users, contributing to a positive image of urban transport," it stated.

Ergonomics and excellent visibility enhances the driver's experience and reduces their fatigue, it says. In addition, connectivity features - such as the Driving Style Evaluation system – enhances their working day and safety.

THE MAKE-UP

The E-Way 18m requires little maintenance due to the small number of mechanical components, and it is very easy to service, says Iveco.

It is also extremely durable, with the stainless-steel structure, chassis with reinforced protection, and body in composite materials, it explains.

It also comes with a range of consulting, financial and maintenance services to facilitate the work of transport operators, providing a complete transport solution, the company adds.

DAILY MINIBUSES

The latest versions of its successful Daily Minibus range were also on display: the Daily Pop, Daily Start, Daily Line and Daily Tourys.

Launched a few months ago, the newest generation of the Daily Minibus aims to meet all passenger transport needs: a school minibus to transport schoolchildren, an intercity bus with the largest passenger capacity in its category and a touring minibus for pleasant, comfortable travel, says Iveco.

At Busworld, 2019, Iveco Bus presented this renewed range, displaying a Daily Tourys on its stand and providing a Daily Line NP Hi-Matic for test drive. Visitors also got to discover the new Daily Start, running on natural gas, for the first time.

THE TOURYS

According to Iveco Bus, the Tourys is the, "...perfect touring minibus to travel with comfort and style."

Its "atmospheric LED lighting" improves the vehicle's interior and "passenger wellbeing". The 2.5m3 baggage compartment and the new interior racks make it the best in its class, in terms of total storage space, it says. It is fully compliant with the anti-rollover standard (R66.02).

Available in three lengths, it is equipped with pneumatic rear suspension, air conditioning, an audio-visual multimedia setup, USB plugs for each pair of seats, and the much-appreciated LDWS driving assistance system, which prevents the driver from being distracted or nodding off, it says.

The exclusive eight-speed Hi-Matic transmission - now a standard feature - guarantees maximum performance with low operating costs and the utmost in driving pleasure, says Iveco.

Faster and more precise than the traditional six-speed manual, it offers changes without torque interruption in less than 200ms for high-level performance, it claims.

ABOUT IVECO BUS

Iveco Bus is a brand of CNH Industrial N.V., a global leader in capital goods listed on the New York Stock Exchange and on the Borsa Italiana in Milan, it states.

A major player in the field of public transport, and among the leading bus and coach manufacturers in Europe, Iveco Bus designs, manufactures and markets a broad range of vehicles that meets all the needs of public and private operators, it explains.

Looks like they are investigating similar options to the Brisbane metro (electric bi articulated vehicles) but running East- West. This does make sense from a cost perspective. As long as they achieve the same frequency outcomes as Trams and operating hours. The buses will also need to have priority approach installed when approaching intersections, plus upgraded premium stops with security and real time information.

Couriermail Quest --> Brisbane City Council's bus fleet could go fully electric

QuoteBrisbane's Lord Mayor has called for bus builders to come up with a plan for the city's 1200-strong fleet to be zero emission, as he revealed which route will get the city's first fully electric buses.

BRISBANE'S bus fleet could one day be fully electric with no tailpipe carbon emissions after the council called for tenders to future-proof the city's buses.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the council's current bus building contract would run out in 2022 and it would "welcome plans for zero-emission bus options".

He wanted future bidders to pitch long-term plans to transition the council's bus fleet to cleaner power sources, like Paris, London and Amsterdam, which had already gone electric.

"It's about environmental sustainability, about making sure we adapt to the changing climate and also keeping those running costs down as well, which is really important," he said.

The value of the Brisbane City Council's contract to build buses, which is held by Volgren, is commercial-in-confidence.

Meanwhile, the city's first fully electric buses will be put on trial this year on the free City Loop service.

The tenders for the trial on the free City Loop service closed last November and the successful candidate will be announced mid-this year.

"We know this technology works, it is being used elsewhere," Cr Schrinner said.

"What we want to determine is the best routes to put these buses on and the City Loop trial will give us operating information so that we know which parts of the city would be best suited for electric buses."

He said the cost for electric buses would be higher upfront and would need to include charging infrastructure, but would have were lower running costs than diesel buses.

Cr Schrinner said the council had 1200 buses in its fleet and replaced about 60 buses a year but that did not mean it would necessarily take 20 years to transition to a fully electric fleet.

He said there had been years where the council had replaced 100 or 125 buses while another factor was the life of the buses, which under TransLink is 20 years.

If that lifespan was reduced, which would be up to the State Government, that could also change how long it took to electrify the fleet.

The council's Brisbane Metro vehicles will be fully electric and built by Volgren and Hess.

University of Queensland Tritium E-Mobility Fellow Dr Jake Whitehead said it was an exciting announcement that was "a longtime coming".

"We should be moving towards a fully electrified fleet that will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also reduce transport costs for everyone that lives in the city," he said.

"We're already at a point where the total cost of ownership (of electric vehicles) is almost on parity with diesel and that's only going to improve over the coming years."

Dr Whitehead said the introduction of electric vehicles "open up a who range of new jobs".

He said the city was home to the likes of Tritium whose electric vehicle fast-charging technology had been exported around the world.

"It's certainly a great opportunity to support local businesses in deploying electric buses and electric vehicles more broadly," he said.

Brisbane Airport Corporation executive general manager consumers Martin Ryan said the airport had run an electric fleet of12 buses for two years.

"The buses are incredibly quiet and are helping reduce 250 tonnes of carbon emissions each year, which equals 100 less cars on roads," he said.

Labor Lord Mayoral candidate Patrick Condren said that having an electric fleet was "a good idea in this modern day and age".

"I would also like to investigate the possibility of hydrogen, that's the next tip for vehicles — hydrogen powered," he said.

Brisbanetimes --> Electric bus that runs on sunlight to power through testing in Brisbane

QuoteAn electric bus that runs on 100 per cent solar power is set to be trialled on Brisbane streets, once engineers stop it from going too fast.

The bus is being developed by transport operator Transdev, which supplied about 100 buses to TransLink's south-east Queensland fleet.

Transdev chief engineer Marc Cleave said the electric bus was very quiet and extremely energy efficient, which posed some problems for the development team.

"It has excellent torque, so it takes off very quickly, which is actually a problem because you don't want passengers going flying down the aisle," Mr Cleave said.

"We've managed to sort that out now so it has a much smoother start, which is actually much better for its battery as well."

The bus, which can transport more than 60 passengers sitting and standing, has an on-board battery that allows it to travel up to 300 kilometres without needing a recharge.

The bus is set to arrive in Brisbane in December after being fine-tuned in Melbourne, and will undergo further testing on routes in Brisbane and the Redlands over the next two years, before being put into service as part of TransLink's fleet.

"Once the vehicle is operational we want to try it out on several routes and see how it performs and how we can get the most efficient use out of it," Mr Cleave said.

The bus is recharged by a purpose-built array of 10 Tesla powerwalls installed at Transdev's Capalaba depot, which are themselves fed by 250 solar panels on the depot's roof.

This means the "e-bus" is 100 per cent solar-powered, which will be an Australian first when it starts active service.

It also has the capability to recharge its battery as it is driving by generating energy from its brakes, with plans to retrain drivers on how to get the most out of the vehicle compared with a standard fuel-powered bus.

TransLink chief executive Matt Longland said they were very excited by Transdev's electric bus and were keen to see how it performed on the road.

"We've got a commitment from the Queensland government to move to a zero-emissions economy, and that's about looking at the contribution we make in transport and making public transport even more sustainable," Mr Longland said.

"Part of that is learning from what's happening in other parts of the world, as bus fleets move into zero-emission vehicles."

Transdev's Queensland head of business Mark McKenzie said the company had introduced similar vehicles in other countries including New Zealand, but it made perfect sense to put a solar-powered bus on the roads of the Sunshine State.

"It's part of planning for the future. Transdev has fleets internationally, we have over 850 electric vehicles running internationally and we're always looking for the next generation," Mr McKenzie said.

Depending on how the e-bus performed, Transdev said it could add more electric buses to its Brisbane fleet, with the powerwall set-up able to be easily scaled to three times its current output without having to extend the installation.

The bus also features USB charging ports for phones and other devices as well as an on-board passenger monitoring system and real-time efficiency data which is fed back to Transdev for future development.

Brisbanetimes --> Electric bus contract awarded for City Loop trial

QuoteAn electric bus will be trialled on Brisbane's free City Loop bus route for a year after the council approved a contract this week.

Brisbane City Council public transport chairman Ryan Murphy said the $3 million contract was awarded to Yutong, trading as Vehicle Dealers International Pty Ltd.

"We know that Brisbane's current bus contract ends in 2022, and now is the time for Brisbane to start testing the waters for the transition to vehicles with a smaller footprint," he said.

"This new contract for the bus trial will continue our commitment to a cleaner and greener public transport fleet."

The trial was announced by lord mayor Adrian Schrinner in the 2020-21 budget and will complement the council's previous announcement that all future Brisbane Metro vehicles will be electric.

Cr Murphy said some of the benefits of switching to electric buses included zero tailpipe emissions, a quieter ride and the potential to save on operating costs while the vehicle remained in use.

There was also the potential to charge the vehicle through "green" power, he said.

The City Loop is serviced by diesel buses that run about 130 kilometres a day through the short CBD route.

The year-long trial will allow the council to establish how well the buses operate in Brisbane's climate, if there are any safety issues with pedestrians as the buses are so quiet and any other issues.

The contract could be extended for up to five years with more vehicles purchased.

Yutong Australia began importing buses from China in 2012.

"The tender process found there are, at the moment, no Australian electric buses that can operate and service our requirements and therefore we've had to source an electric bus from outside Australia," Cr Murphy said.

"However our officers have looked at companies that have a presence within Queensland and we believe this is a very fast-moving space and we will certainly be watching the local options."

The state government's public transport department, TransLink, and private operator Transdev have been developing their own electric bus trial.

That bus runs on 100 per cent solar power and will be tested on routes in Brisbane and the Redlands over the next two years, before being put into service as part of TransLink's fleet.
