Couriermail --> 'Lose a little bark': Minister concedes speculation has damaged Premier $

QuoteTransport Minister Mark Bailey insists Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has his support but has conceded damage has been inflicted on the leader amid intense speculation.

The cabinet minister said it was normal for leaders to "lose a little bark along the way" but refused to elaborate on the cause of the damage to Ms Palaszczuk's profile.

Speculation about the leadership has continued in recent days in the wake of longstanding fears among Labor MPs, who have privately expressed concerns of an election wipe-out with Ms Palaszczuk at the helm. ... [/html]

Couriermail --> Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk resigns $

QuotePremier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced she is stepping down.

In a surprise announcement, Ms Palaszczuk said "the time was right".

"I have given it my all and I have run a marathon," she said.

She became emotional as she said the position had been the honour of her life.

"I've been thinking about it for a while, and it's the right time, and it's time for renewal," Ms Palaszczuk said.

"I've dedicated my whole life to community service, there's no greater honour.

"Nine years, it feels like an eternity."

Ms Palaszczuk said the state was set up for "such a bright future".

"I am absolutely committed to making a smooth transition," she said.

The premier made the announcement during a press conference called to discuss Tropical Cyclone Jasper.

After a short update on the weather event, Ms Palaszczuk said the looming cyclone would be the 63rd natural disaster she had led the state through as premier.

"That figure doesn't count the global pandemic," she said.

"I said then that if we had a strong health response we would have a strong economic recovery and that's exactly what has happened. ...

There will probably be a reshuffle either soon after the new premier takes over, or after the election in October next year.

That's if they are re-elected. Oppositions usually have reshuffles anyway due to change in MPs.

Brisbanetimes --> What (and who) comes next for Queensland Labor after Palaszczuk $

QuoteSteven Miles may have been endorsed by outgoing Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk as her successor after announcing she would step down at the end of the week, but his ascension from the deputy spot is not guaranteed.

Internal party talks at multiple levels will shape the next steps and determine whether the leadership question can be decided among the 52 Labor MPs when they meet on Friday, or go to a rare contested ballot and drawn-out vote including unions and grassroots members.

Labor's administrative committee will meet on Monday night to formally open nominations for the parliamentary leadership, with Miles already declaring his intention to nominate and laying out a public pitch within hours of Palaszczuk's announced end to almost nine years in the job. ...

Couriermail --> Steven Miles firming as most likely next Premier as Fentiman, Dick make last ditch efforts for top job $

QuoteSteven Miles is emerging as Queensland's most likely next premier, despite a last-ditch effort from rising star and Health Minister Shannon Fentiman.

Labor powerbrokers and MPs are warning the battle to be premier is far from a fait accompli, with Treasurer Cameron Dick understood to be sounding out his potential in a three-horse leadership race.

Mr Miles, the Deputy Premier, has been anointed successor by outgoing Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, who gave him a resounding endorsement on Sunday as she made her shock announcement to bow out by the end of the week.

Mr Miles has already declared his hand, confirming in a statement he would nominate as Labor leader and premier when MPs hold an emergency meeting of caucus on Friday. ...

Which candidate will be a person of their word?

Dr Miles as quoted in the Glasshouse Country and Maleny News, 4 December 2023: "The Direct Sunshine Coast Rail Line will be prioritised as part of the transport program for the 2032 Olympic Games."

Yes, but will it?

The Australian --> New Queensland premier 'must axe dud ministers', say Labor MPs $

QuoteQueensland's new premier will be pressured by backbenchers to sack "dud" cabinet ministers to rehabilitate the Labor government's image on policy pressure points ahead of next year's state election.

As furious negotiations continue to try to settle the leadership contest between Left faction rivals Steven Miles and Shannon Fentiman, some ALP MPs are calling for a frontbench clearout of deadwood to coincide with the change at the top.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey, Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath, retiring Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe, Resources Minister Scott Stewart, Youth Justice Minister Di Farmer and Police Minister Mark Ryan are all in the sights of the Labor caucus to be kicked out of cabinet.

One Left faction MP told The Australian that if controversy-prone Mr Bailey were not sacked as Transport Minister by the new leader, there would be a "revolt".

"The Premier was punished and paid the price for being loyal to dud ministers," the MP said.

"If Bailey is not removed from cabinet there will be a revolt."

It is understood Mr Bailey is supporting Left ally Ms Fentiman in the leadership contest, and Mr Miles would be more inclined to remove him from cabinet. ...

Couriermail --> Next Qld premier almost certain to jettison minister Mark Bailey $

QuoteTrouble-prone Transport Minister Mark Bailey faces the boot and the "dead wood" in cabinet will be removed under a deep ministerial reshuffle by Queensland's next premier, Labor insiders say.

Senior sources within the government warn a reset is needed for the state's 40th premier to stand a chance against the LNP at the election next October.

Frantic phone calls are being made as Shannon Fentiman and Steven Miles negotiate with Labor MPs about what their respective cabinets would look like and the policy priorities they would prosecute in an attempt to win the election.

Both leadership contenders are refusing to detail, however, what deals they have made with colleagues. ...

Will change in the Minister for Transport actually achieve anything?

Unless there is a committment to start doing things that matter it will be continuing failure.

There has to be structural reform with a proper public transport authority established, with the resources, the will and the funding to get things happening. First priority.

Public transport in Queensland is a mess. Mired in non-transparency and bulldust!

The change in Philosophy has to come from the party in Government or at best be allowed to happen by them

I can't see any change happing whilst he is a Minister. It needs fresh blood who can say "We are learning from our mistakes"

Normally in circumstances such as this there is a reshuffle of portfolios to present a fresh face of government ... and the general practice is to reward those who's support you received with plum jobs. Reportedly, Blowout Bailey backed the wrong horse. His preferred Premier was Shannon Fentiman. Will Premier Miles keep him in the transport portfolio? We should know by the end of the week.

Can't say many would miss him if he's out of the Transport Minister's job by the end of the week by the incoming Premier's imminent cabinet reshuffle.

However, will he 'challenge' for the leadership should Labor lose government? and therefore become 'Opposition Leader Mark Bailey'
(probably the likely scenario is a LNP/Right Wing Independent minority government in that case - can't see LNP winning outright)

^^ Agree, would be good to see a change there

Does anyone reckon Mick de Brenni is in for chance for the Transport Portfolio? Coincidentally, he is a cyclist as well.
