When does everyone reckon the train line will go in? 2028?

timh

The latest rumorings I've been hearing is 2041...

verbatim9

2041 LoL! Government still working on a public transport plan. How tragic! Why not announce a public transport plan simultaneously with this deal?

The Beaudesert line should be designed and implemented as driverless. They should be looking for potential tenders now. The only way forward is to have a mixture of driverless and driver only in the network. Similar to Singapore for cost effective ongoing operations.
The new bombardier trains in Singapore are driverless. They own and have the patents for this tech. I doubt that Downer EDI could replicate the technological expertise that goes into the driverless trains, cost effectively.

Another outer urban car dependent, public transport less, congestion failure ...

Good Morning,

The Government has released a statement: Infrastructure deal paves way for communities to prosper
http://statements.qld.gov.au/Statement/2019/5/26/infrastructure-deal-paves-way-for-communities-to-prosper

"Flagstone and Yarrabilba are in Queensland's fastest growing population corridor, with estimates that by 2066 there will be 200,000 people living in these areas... "

Lots of follow on gloss media extolling how wonderful it is to be creating in effect yet another outer urban car dependent, public transport less, congestion failure.  A heavy rail solution is touted as being sometime in 2041, attempting to run buses on an already failing road network is not going to work.

The Southern bus region, which incorporates the Logan region is the worst performing bus network in SEQ.  Not very encouraging is it.  People should be very aware of the transport problems that will worsen considerably as more and more people are enticed by glossy advertising and a disconnect from reality.

Best wishes,

Robert

The dream of the Salisbury to Beaudesert rail is not going happen anytime soon ..  https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Projects/Name/S/Salisbury-to-Beaudesert-Rail-Corridor-Study

I am starting to think a simple branch extension from Springfield Central to Flagstone and Yarrabilba might be achievable.

ICC are very keen on the Springfield Central - Ripley - Ipswich rail.  It could all fit together rather well ..

The agreement is one-way and should not have been signed off (developers should have refused to sign) unless there was concrete commitment that the state government (perhaps with financial backing of developers and the council) would implement a public transport plan. Are transport corridors preserved?  Hopefully we won't get to a situation where new houses have to be bought up for a rail corridor

Television footage last night suggested that a 'plan was being worked up'.  Not good enough.  We all know of the glossy documents, fly-throughs and artists impressions with fine print stating 'concept only' underneath. So, what is the priority for Springfield-Ipswich line vis-à-vis railway to Flagstone and Yarrabilba?  The priority projects are building up!

Maybe time to earmark some Adani coal royalties to the provision of new public transport infrastructure. After all, a government benefiting from digging up fossil fuels should offset the climatic impacts of that fuel being burnt by providing public transport that encourages people to leave the car at home, thus limiting the pollution in the atmosphere from vehicle exhausts - not to mention congestion on our roads.

It is likely that the immediate solutions will be roads based, with some senseless argument (again) around lack of funding from the Feds for the roads infrastructure capacity boost required to accommodate the movements of Flagstone and Yarrabilba motorists.  :fp:

I see trouble, big trouble ahead ...

It goes from diabolical to tragic the transport meltdown ... it is all over SEQ now ...

our Government is struggling to afford to buy a candle to bless themselves ..

This. 110% this!!

Quote"New, high-quality communities like Yarrabilba have a vital role to play in accommodating the continued growth of the region"

Anecdotally, what I have heard coming out of Yarrabilba so far is far from something you'd expect from a "high-quality community". It is one of the few areas where many people can afford housing, yet it is almost bereft of community facilities, decent public transport, and most of the essentials are ~20 mins away in Beenleigh. In turn, this is causing all sorts of issues in the area.

I hope it improves, lest Yarrabilba become an urban planning failure. Time will tell.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

Both of these communities can and should be serviced by heavy rail, and the corridor is already there. Flagstone by the standard guage line (corridor needs some widening and two narrow guage tracks laid, electrification, etc), and Yarrabilba by the Bethania/Canungra line (Bethania to Logan village, than branching south on old Canungra alignment). The corridor is again already there.

TRANSPORT PLAN: Signs at Flagstone in June, 2017, indicating commencement of bus services. Photo: Michael Burge

From Jimboomba Times  Flagstone bus delays leave residents seeking answers, again

AFAIA the only real PT option is the 540 bus at Jimboomba which  is ~10 km from Flagstone.

^^An express bus (with a few articulated vehicles in the mix) that connects with the 140 and 150 at Browns Plains would be good.

Logan City Council --> Rail trail will link Logan Village and Yarrabilba

QuoteA walking, hiking and riding trail from Logan Village to Yarrabilba is now a step closer.

Logan City Council has committed $1.25 million over the next two years towards the total project budget of $2.5m as detailed planning of the trail nears completion.

The 3.5km trail will be built on a disused rail spur line, which was transferred to Council as road reserve. It is flanked mostly by natural bushland.

Delivery of the rail trail was a key priority project identified from the Logan Village Forum hosted by Council in March 2018.

Feedback from the forum indicated there would be significant economic benefits for Logan Village through a direct connection with the growing and neighbouring community of Yarrabilba.

Preparations for the trail have been significant and included a comprehensive feasibility study.

Council's $2 million Logan Village Implementation Fund in June 2018 also included an allowance for design of the trail, but not construction.

In April last year, a further $200,000 funding grant was secured through the State Government's Rail Trail Local Government Grants (RTLGG) program to finalise the feasibility study and detailed design of the trail.

The additional funding by Council in the 2020/2021 Budget towards construction of the project – combined with the study and design preparations – is expected to put the proposed trail in a good position to be eligible for State and Federal funding opportunities as a pandemic recovery capital works project.

Just a friendly reminder to all that this is what happens when you build a sh!t-ton of houses in the middle of no where with no proper or quality public transport services or easy access to literally anything. No, a bus service running every 2 hours at times, 6 days per week does not suffice :frs:

For those wondering, that traffic bank up to the north is about 3.5kms and Google Maps says it'll take you 23 mins to drive that section, the bank up to the west is about 2.5kms, with an 8 min travel time.

verbatim9

People drive as they know before they buy in those areas they are likely needing to drive.

Though the bus service is likely to increase over time to become a 7 day and night service.

I wish they still had the service to Mt Tamborine Village.

Couriermail Quest --> 'First a crematorium, now a rail trail for thousands': anger as Palm Lakes Resort to become tourist walk $

Logan Village, where the rail trail will end. Picture: Richard Walker

QuoteA retirement village, which sensationally lost a battle to stop a crematorium being built next door, is now fighting the same council to stop a 2km rail trail being built through its middle.

More than 600 angry elderly residents at Palm Lakes Resort, Bethania, are challenging a council and state government plan to build a walking trail for 50,000 tourists a year through their gated community.

Logan City Council has asked the state government for more than $3.5 million to build the 13.5km Bethania to Yarrabilba Rail Trail even though 2km of track is under lease to Palm Lakes Resort Retirement Village.

The 2km stretch of track runs through the centre of the resort cutting the village in half and creating fears it will become a crime target. ...

I see the Courier Mail is happy to continue to peddle this fear despite there being no good evidence of this effect
The best time to break car dependence was 30 years ago. The second best time is now.

timh

That is the NIMBY-est sh%t I have ever seen. Seriously, opposing a walking/cycling trail???

nathandavid88

That Palm Lake decided to build their gated village straddling a transport corridor (albeit disused) is really on them as far as I'm concerned.

Gazza

Yeah by the looks of it it's actually two separate Palm Lake "Branches", each with its own pools, gatehouse etc.
Palm Lake Waterford and Palm Lake Bethania.
Bethania came first but then they linked Waterford to it, even with signage at the threshold
https://www.google.com/maps/@-27.6988365,153.1539215,3a,90y,135.47h,86.26t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sBigYz2_efkkxxL4JR4H1_g!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

So yeah they should build straight through and Palm lakes can do their own internal gates either side of the rail trail if its a concern.
