They are literally fear mongering off of the fact that the trial is for adults only. Some of those interviews with the public should never have aired. Its clear that they didnt realise the new system will allow concession fares after the trial. :fp:

I wonder when the account management system will become available for the public... The trial is good and all, but until they allow people to access the account management, I don't see it catching on too much. It's hard to trust something when there's no way to verify what's going on other than looking at the final charge from your account.

Spot on.  And they haven't explained properly how concessions will eventually be available and how it will work.

Has anyone used them yet? Hopefully they operate faster than the old ones.

Use them today. They seemed to work fine. Can't say if they're faster though... I don't use fare gates often.

Cazza

In the meeting we had, Martin did say they are faster. In saying that, I think anything would be an improvement on the speed of the current fare gates.

Smart Ticketing trial on Ferny Grove

A Smart Ticketing trial is currently underway on the Ferny Grove line for customers travelling anywhere between Ferny Grove and Central stations on an adult fare.

How will this affect me?

If you travel between Ferny Grove and Central stations (not beyond) you can choose to tap on and off using a Visa, Mastercard or American Express contactless card or smart device to pay the same as an adult go card fare.

Our dedicated Street Team dressed in pink will be located at Ferny Grove, Central, and all stations in between to help customers tap in to Smart Ticketing.

If you have a concession, travel beyond Central station, or need to transfer, we ask that you continue to use your go card or paper ticket as usual.

It does look like the new ones would be at a better height for wheelchairs (even though that's only important for the wider gates...). Maybe it's closer in height to the platform readers too?? Anyone wanna take a tape measure to Central Station?!? :-r Regardless when I used it the other day, the height didn't seem to be an issue...

Brisbanetimes --> Four years and $270m later, Queenslanders still waiting to ditch their Go Cards

QuoteIt was supposed to have already been rolled out across the state. Instead, a new public transport ticketing system that would lift Brisbane into line with Sydney and other global cities has progressed only to its second south-east Queensland trial.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey announced the $371 million "smart ticketing" system in June 2018 as part of that year's state budget, declaring it would be delivered in four years.

If this had been successful, millions of commuters in SEQ and 18 regional areas would now have the option of tapping on and off trains, buses and trams with their bank cards or smart devices instead of using the outdated Go Card.

Currently, the most obvious sign of the rollout on the train network is a trial between Brisbane's Central Station and Ferny Grove. It began early last month.

The other trial, on the Gold Coast's tram service, has been running for more than 18 months. In a statement acknowledging hold-ups, Bailey said preparations had also included the installation of 561 smart ticketing validators across 136 SEQ train stations and 230 gates across 19 stations. ...

Brisbanetimes --> Queensland commuters set post-COVID record as smart ticketing trial expands

Quote... Meanwhile, the government's $371 million smart ticketing trial, which will allow commuters to use credit/debit cards, smartphones and smartwatches to pay their fares, will extend to the Ipswich/Rosewood and Springfield lines from Monday.

It came almost three months after the Ferny Grove line was added to the trial.

The new system was well behind schedule, having been given a four-year timeframe when it was announced in 2018. Then, Go Card operator Cubic was awarded the contract following a tender process. ...

Concession cardholders will still need to use their Go Card until the full system is rolled out. Tickets will remain the same price. ...

Smart Ticketing train trial heads west
22nd August 2022

https://statements.qld.gov.au/statements/96001

Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Mark Bailey

Ipswich/Rosewood and Springfield train line customers are now able to use credit cards and smart devices to take the train as the rollout of the Palaszczuk Government's $371 million Smart Ticketing project ramps up.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the next phase of game changing technology rollout begins today (August 22).

"Once fully rolled out the Palaszczuk Government's $371 million Smart Ticketing system will cover the largest geographical area of any ticketing system in the world, and be able to adapt to future growth and technology," Mr Bailey said.

"The system will allow commuters to tap onto buses, trains, trams and Translink supported ferries using contactless debit and credit cards, smartphones and smart watches."

Member for Ipswich Jennifer Howard said she was excited to see Ipswich commuters offered a new way to pay for their train trips.

"From what I've heard, the trial on the Ferny Grove line has been a big success and well received by commuters, so I can't wait to see it come to the Ipswich/Rosewood line later this month," Ms Howard said.

"From today, full fare paying customers travelling between Rosewood and Central, and Springfield and Central to tap on at the start and off at the end of their journey using Smart Ticketing equipment with Visa, Mastercard or American Express contactless debit or credit cards, or smart devices such as phones and watches."

Member for Bundamba Lance McCallum said the program also recognises Queensland's First Nations' history.

"The Smart Ticketing readers and gates are colourfully wrapped in the iconic First Nation's Connecting Thread artwork, and include larger, brighter and clearer screens, sounds and messages – making it easier to stay on top of your taps," Mr McCallum said.

"This is not only a great recognition of our First Nations culture, but an effective way of making the infrastructure more accessible for everyone."

Member for Springfield Charis Mullen said the Smart Ticketing rollout was off to a flying start on other lines, and will be a success on the Springfield line.

"There's already been more than 70,000 trips made using the new payment options in the Ferny Grove trial, and more than 1.3 million trips on Gold Coast light rail," Ms Mullen said.

"I've got no doubt it will be a similar case on the Ipswich/Rosewood and Springfield lines, and then on other lines as the trial continues this year."

Member for Mount Ommaney Jess Pugh said the progressive testing and trial periods made sure customers had the best experience possible when transitioning to the new system.

"Queensland's iconic go card has been used to pay for transport for about 16 years so the new system will be a big shake up to how people plan, catch and pay for services, not just here in Brisbane but right across the state," Ms Pugh said.

"We're focused on giving Queenslanders a new product that is fit for purpose and easy to use, so it's important we take this time to progressively trial the system.

"With each tap, we are moving Queensland into the future."

Member for Ipswich West Jim Madden welcomed the announcement.

"Whether you're starting your trip at Rosewood or Walloon, you will be some of the first people to test out the Smart Ticketing system in Ipswich," Mr Madden said.

"It's an exciting project and an exciting time to live in Ipswich."

Member for Cooper Jonty Bush said the Smart Ticketing gates and validators are an impressive site at Milton station.

"We've already installed 561 Smart Ticketing validators across 136 SEQ train stations including Milton," Ms Bush said.

"More than 230 Smart Ticketing gates wrapped in the project's iconic First Nations artwork will continue to be progressively installed across QR's 19 gated stations ahead of an expansion of the trial to other rail lines in the coming months."

Customers can only pay for their journey and if they are travelling with family or friends everyone will need to use their own contactless debit or credit card or smart device to tap on and tap off.

Customers travelling beyond the trial stations, on a concession fare or transferring to a bus or ferry will need to continue using their go card or purchase a paper ticket to pay for their travel during the trial.

I cannot believe the Beenleigh/GC line are not active for smart ticketing yet considering they connect with the trams that are..... :frs:

Queensland (not the smart state).

Above post forget Beenleigh line.

I wonder if it's something to do with CRR works. Does anyone know if any of the stations still to be rebuilt have the new card readers yet? I haven't been to any in a while.
