Not even a hint of actual smart ticketing.
Not a mention.
It's all about smart payment.

The public can use smart ticketing terminals on the Sunshine Coast line at selected stations from Tuesday.

Customers will be able to use Smart Ticketing on the heavy rail network by the end of 2021.

All of it, it just some? Considering the number of new readers to be installed, that's gonna be a quick rollout!

Smart ticketing validators now installed at the Ekka Station.

Seems a bit pointless at this spot, unless the machines there are just life-expired, or unless they will have enough rolled out elsewhere in the next month to be able to allow a meaningful number of people to use open payment from their home station.  Ticketing is always a bugger during the Ekka of course.

I expect they won't be operational during the Ekka this year given the weirdness about the Ekka loop ticketing. To be honest I'm surprised the station will be open at all but according to Bailey it'll be operational  :conf

What makes the ekka loop ticketing wierd? Aren't they just programmed for Zone 2?

I think it's a good idea having the readers in place for Ekka, considering the Ekka is all about education and exhibiting. It will give a chance for people who are unaware the chance to use them.

I assume they readers can be relocated elsewhere when the new Ekka station is completed.

In fairness it's been a while (10 years+ ) since I've been to Ekka. I thought the train fare was included in the ticket price. I must be wrong then

Will the new ticketing system come with new (hopefully faster) fare gates at the main stations? If so, do we know what they will look like ?

Apparently new fare gates are coming. Must be the last part of the roll out for QR?

Progress map (PDF, 2.69MB) of new equipment rolling out across the Queensland Rail Citytrain network.

You have them at Goodna too Bob, as per the PDF.

Considering the rollout map. It looks like they are completing the Ipswich Caboolture line first, as well as rolling it out on the Springfield Redcliffe line.

Stillwater

If the readers are anything like OPAL Card readers in Sydney, they are faster than current Go-card machines. Far more sensitive.

New readers installed and operational at Darra. TransLink staff are currently on platforms one and two asking customers for feedback and explaining the open payment methods available from next year.

From what I can see of the readers, there is two on P1, four on P2/3 and five on P4.

Yes, new readers at Goodna station. We also finally got some PIDS a few weeks ago too.

The missus used the new readers yesterday, she was happy with them.  Easy to use, and louder was her summary.

Progress on the smart ticketing roll out with the Ipswich Rosewood line converted. New readers exist at most stations enroute, except where there are ticketing gates in place.

achiruel

One thing I don't like about the new readers is they don't tell you if your fare is a continuation. I've raised this with TransLink and received zero response, despite their claim it would be responded to within 10 business days. When I called them yesterday, they still didn't have a response after 14 business days. What is going on at TL?

verbatim9

Has anyone seen the new prototype fare gates as yet. A mock up of one, online or being tested on the network?

Smart ticketing rolls on. Ferny Grove line getting upgraded now.

As per the roll out map, Cubic have almost finished installing the static readers across SE QR Network. I assume that the gates will be upgraded or replaced next, to allow for testing of credit and debit cards. The new app can't be far away, neither can the new readers on buses and ferries.

SurfRail

The only stations where the equipment seems to be absent (based on the map as at today) are:

- The only 20 stations which I believe are fully gated* (ie Nambour, Sandgate, International, Domestic, Ferny Grove, Fortitude Valley, Central, Roma Street, Toowong, all 3 Springfield branch stations, Ipswich, South Brisbane, Cleveland and the 5 Gold Coast stations excluding Ormeau)

- Dakabin and Cannon Hill (which are being upgraded)

- Yeronga (which is closed for CRR works)

- Otherwise, only Norman Park and Morningside

* Eagle Junction still has fare gates AFAIK, but only in the station building (which makes them pointless since you can walk around the whole building to get to the platforms).  Hopefully they don't replace them with new barriers, which would be equally useless.

According to their rollout map, Roma Street has been added

^^Wow, they must of upgraded the gates there, either the readers or the whole gate itself.

I haven't been through Roma Street over the last few days. But I was thinking they may have only replaced the static readers on platform 10?

Xeno

Yeah I went there but fare Gates were still the old ones. I couldn't check if it was platform 10 ones cus the spirit of qld was in the way. I don't know why those static readers are still there. No city trains depart from 10 and there is fare gates further down. Maybe for terminating trains in the morning that sometimes go there. Maybe for people who want to touch off to parklands.

verbatim9

It will be good if Cubic and TMR can activate credit card contactless payments for trains before opening up in November. It will be very handy for the influx of Christmas tourists.

What, all 5 of them from the rest of QLD? :P

No fare gates there. And its not practicable to install them to prevent access to the station considering the station overpass is a thoroughfare for locals. If anything more readers need to be installed on P3/4 as queues can build up around the narrow stair case. Prior to covid it wasn't uncommon for guards to yell at passengers who were pretty much leaning up against trains while they waited for the readers. But hey. Who needs more readers now anyway.

Citytrains frequently arrive and depart from platform 10. Throughout the week for example Northgate/Doomben services use P10 to turn around. Every second or third morning peak service terminates on P10.

Cubic must be close to upgrading or installing new fare gates. The smart ticketing tracker states fare gates stations on the Gold Coast line "coming soon".

verbatim9

Basically, Cubic and TMR have until early Dec to have the new app and fare gates functional before the tourists arrive mid December.

verbatim9

I wonder how the pilot for the buses are going and which regions are testing new readers. Nothing on the website pertaining to new readers being tested anywhere in Qld?

kram0

Do we know what type of fare gates we are getting?
