No one really seems to care a continental though except us.

When low frequency services are cancelled the effects are very serious for the affected punters.  High frequency route cancellations are a trivial inconvenience by comparison.

It is though we are just hitting our heads into the blue water bubbler on Goodna station, over and over again  :frs:

One thing I have picked up is that Moreton and Sunshine Coast they continue to run the services albeit late, Western they are just pulled.

I think this really does show how buggered up the whole western region timetable is in effect.

e.g.  right on cue ..  :o

I think there was a problem with buses in that region many years ago also. I would be surprised if 'congestion' was behind it, Ipswich is way less busy than Brisbane.

Quote from: LD Transit on July 26, 2016, 14:29:01 PMI think there was a problem with buses in that region many years ago also. I would be surprised if 'congestion' was behind it, Ipswich is way less busy than Brisbane.

Congestion may be just the start, there can be any number of reasons for delays on services - high number of go card top-ups, disabled pax getting on/off, someone telling their life story to the bus driver, driver taking a wrong turn, unexpected delays, the list goes on.

I caught a 200 bus on the weekend, we were 5 mins adrift by the time we got to Wooloongabba just thanks to general hoo-haa-ing (asking for directions, paper tickets, mums with prams getting on/off). If there isn't enough time allowed for a bus to catch-up time at the end of a route, such delays can easily cascade into 15-20 minute delays, at which point an operator may consider cancelling a service.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

Re Western region. Top ups on the buses out here are quicker than paper ticket sales. Paper ticket sales seem to be getting a lot rarer these days as well.

There are congestion issues believe or not around peak and school peak times.  Can be very significant at times.  For example it is not unknown for vehicles to take 15 minutes to travel down Queen St from up past Alice to the highway entrance.  Ipswich itself clags up as well.

There appears to be no reserve in the bus fleet, either buses or drivers, and there does seem to be a significant number of mechanical failures as well.  The timetable is not adjusted for congestion.  Delays concatenate so services end up getting pulled.  Hardly satisfactory though is it?

Queensland Times --> Plan for Ipswich that will save you hours every day

QuoteTHOSE lost hours sitting and waiting for a bus or train are set to be a thing of the past if Cr Cheryl Bromage has her way.

The city's infrastructure boss is working closely with Ipswich public transport guru Robert Dow to lobby Translink for changes to bus timetables.

Last year Cr Bromage unveiled iGo, the Council's plan to ensure the city's transport system keeps pace with increases in travel demand as the population grows.

A key goal of iGo is to integrate transport throughout the city.

Cr Bromage said Mr Dow "gets public transport" and understands that the more carriages full of commuters in trains, the less congestion there will be on our roads.

"But he is also helping us with the bus situation," Cr Bromage said.

"Buses don't meet the train timetable.

"People are sitting there (at stations) waiting for half an hour for the next train to come along, but in the suburbs it takes some people an hour to get to a train station because currently the buses are a 'one size fits all' which actually fits nobody.

"So if you live out the back of Redbank Plains you've got to do a tour of the whole suburb to get to the (Springfield or Goodna) train station, so there is no incentive for people to catch public transport.

"We'd like to see a change to timetables and even a rapid bus in peak hours where every 15 minutes if you go to an identified stop it will take you to the train station, and in the afternoon that would be reversed.

"If we can get some of those actions happening we can change the way the city goes forward.

"That doesn't require us to build new roads. It is more a timing issue and having a service for the people."

Cr Bromage said having a train station at Redbank Plains would alleviate the time residents in that suburb have to spend on buses and in vehicles commuting to train stations, and alleviate parking congestion at Springfield.

In today's council meeting Cr David Morrison said the "railway extension from Springfield Central to Redbank Plains was essential".

"The population mass at Redbank Plains justifies rail and there is no more affordable and reliable form of public transport," he said.

I have been watching the bus service disruption notices via TransLink closely.  Since we highlighted the problems with Western region service disruptions for that region have ceased - either all buses are back on track or they have simply stopped reporting, but the number of Brisbane service disruptions has increased.

It is all a big wonder & mystery ...

route 522 complaints from separate facebook users....

today

QuoteAttention Translink,

The 522 GOODNA SHOPS was due to arrive at the Old Logan Road at Julieanne St stop at 9.16 this morning. It never arrived. Instead it drove past with an "OUT OF SERVICE" sign at 9.49 (36 minutes late) and then the 522 after it arrived at 9.53 am when it was due at 9.46 (13 minutes late). This is not the first time nor the first bus line to be this late but as the main transport company it is YOUR responsibility to ensure that this improves. I'm not the only complainant,15 to twenty other passengers on this bus who were late or completely missed engagements this morning.
I would like to personally thank you for your poor route planning and time table for the 522 route between Orion Springfield and St Ives shops at Goodna. Realistically speaking its not a correct timetable

august 5

QuoteAnother 522 to goodna no-show from Springfield Central station. This is probably rhe 10th time this has happened to me alone so I wonder how much of a regular occurance it is for others. Got a notification from the app 20 minutes after the fact? Top notch. Also why is it always a mechanical issue? I doubt it's a mechanical issue everytime.

Usual generic sorry responses from TL for both posts.....
Its definitely getting out of hand....and you cant help but feel sorry for the dedicated 522 commuters who most likely don't have the option of driving and basically have to take these delays/cancellations up the tailpipe....
So how long will this drag on???

ozbob

I am not confident that all bus disruptions are being reported by TransLink.

Clearly TransLink is dependent on notifications from the operators and or bus control.  I know that in the case of BT a lot are not reported - particularly no shows which is the major concern vs. lates.

It is becoming a real struggle at times to use the buses, just too damn unreliable when low frequency not reliable or serviced as we are seeing out West.  The 522 is a special basket case.  But other routes suffering as well.

The Minister is aware of the issues,  Mrs Miller Bundamba MP raised issues with Western buses in estimates,  I have personally raised Western problems with TransLink, and I have briefed Ipswich City Council on the issues.

Mr Scales response in estimates was in the main to point out that people can use an app to see where the bus is or ISN'T !

:fp:

I have written letters to media, and have raised it in a number of articles etc.

The public transport administration seems to just not care sadly.

This is one of the reasons why I am now on a crusade of sorts highlighting constantly the shambles. Not only the bus woes but the abysmal administration generally.

Labor does not grasp the fact that there is more to PT than GC light rail stage 2 ....

Fire alarm in QSBS this evening caused the platforms to be evacuated and buses re-routed. First announcement was made at KGS at approx. 5:30pm. We were told buses were being re-routed to use the Roma St portal and would still be serving KGS. Didn't see a 385 turn up until approx. 6pm, a couple of minutes after they announced that QSBS was opened again (the 385 did come from Roma St though and used the doughnut to turn around - just heavy delays due to surface traffic).

Along wth general chaos caused by Thor.  The SEB is a congested (its a car/bus parking lot) until buranda.  Even dead run buses going south are backed up onto the M3 at wollongabba.

If a several kilometre long bus park isnt a sign for bus reform, nothing is.

Also about 30 buses stuck on the riverside expressway.
