Bus delays, cancellations ...

I'd actually call the 425 the worst bus in the westside. Some of the reactions I've got from people catching the 425 include "The bus is ALWAYS running late", "Chapel Hill buses make me so angry", and even one person who said "catching the [425] bus makes me want to kill myself." The reason why we probably don't see many complaints is because the folk of Chapel Hill see the bus running 10 minutes late as the norm. There is a reason why Moggill Rd is so congested.

Unrelated: Bad night to be catching a 412. 11:38pm Inbound 412 stuck behind a maxi taxi at the William Jolly Bridge off-ramp, which to my fleeing glance looked to be some kind of drunken argument with a taxi driver (hint: pull into the side street, DON'T stop on the off-ramp!), and the 11:45pm outbound 412 was stuck broken down at Cribb St.

Thankfully James just drove into the CBD this evening. Unlike the frequent network, my car does not stop running 1km from my house. 8)
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

There are too many bus delays etc. to note all.  I tend to just try and record the more unusual/signficant.

It's like Translink putting out a tweet saying "A bus is currently running 30 minutes late"........ HOW THE HELL DOES THAT HELP ME??????

I disagree, it is a good way of TransLink telling everybody 'the bus network is rooted, expect serious delays'. Particularly when you have hundreds of services delayed (which wouldn't be surprising at all), it is much easier just to tell everybody to generally expect delays, rather than list a multitude of bus services.

When I'm sitting at the front of a bus, I sometimes like to take a peek at the driver run sheets (for curiosity's sake), and often buses don't stay in the one series, yet alone one region. One example which particularly stood in my mind was a bus which was running something like 428 -> 411 -> 174 -> 180 -> 417. So a car crash at Garden City can cause a bus in Long Pocket to run late (and vice versa). For this reason, you can't even say 'all 1xx routes are running late'.

Yep, Bus Crew Scheduling is a very complex problem to solve, especially in real-time to adjust the assignments of crew and buses to cover for issues caused by traffic, breakdowns, etc. There are the obvious physical constraints of making sure there are buses in the right locations to perform the services on time, but there is also a lot of constraints to ensure labour rules are observed (like maximum driving time, mealbreaks, etc), otherwise penalty costs will apply. As you mentioned, a bus and driver may cover a number of different routes in different regions over the course of their run, so delays for one trip may have adverse effects on several routes afterwards, as other buses are reallocated to cover them, etc.

I think the real-time information should definitely help a lot with this problem, as before, operators would have to rely on radio calls to keep track of the positioning of buses, etc. With the predictive information, they can also be a bit more proactive in their operations, adjusting assignments on the fly before delays cause too much of a problem for future services.

Arnz

Can't really speak for the other regions, but up here on the Sunshine Coast though a Caloundra depot based Sunbus unit be can rostered to do one of the Noosa 62x local routes during the day, ditto with a Marcoola based Sunbus unit operating a 605 or 609 down in Caloundra.   603s to my knowledge are currently exclusive to Caloundra depot atm, and likewise with the 632 currently being Marcoola exclusive.

Although this is subject to change with the yearly (sometimes up to 3 in a year) driver roster changes.

I suspect it's more just their once a year fire drills, which tends to happen either early in the morning or in the evening.  I participated in a fire drill at Roma Street behind the scenes a number of years ago while working at TL, and they did two of them, one at 10am and another at 2pm on the same day.  I guess they do it twice due to the retailer's various opening hours and to try and not disrupt shoppers during the busiest times of the day?  My local shopping centre also did two in a day recently, and both at 'off peak' times of when shoppers aren't really shopping as much, ie: at 10:30am and 1:30pm.

posted yesterday by frustrated regular on facebook

QuoteOnce again I'm going to whinge about the 524 redbank plains bus that departs goodna station at 3.55.. 13 people were left behind this afternoon in the rain. I dont understand how no one can work out to put an extra bus on at this time. Every single day it is packed and people get left behind. I understand that there is another bus in 30 mins but I mean some people would have just missed the previous service meaning they had to wait 25mins for this one and then yo be denied access and have to wait another 30 mins is just not exceptable. Not to mention the stress it puts on the driver. He has to carry an extremely packed bus otherwise many more people would be left behind and he has the pressure of looking after their safety. Can this problem please be fixed. If there was one extra service in the afternoon things would run so much better and honestly there should be a school bus anyway at the same time considering most of the passengers are school students. Thankyou

Thanks TB ..
