Powerlines down on Hawken Dr at Tarcoola St... lack of BT notice means that about 10 buses are now queued up where the lines are down and unable to turn around.

Power is out, so James is fleeing to UQ where the power is on. :)
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

Left work late this morning. Going through Aspley at about 7.40-7.50 only to see the 337 being operated by a ultra high capacity bus running about 15 minutes late. Not only do people in Aspley have to put up with poor service frequency they also have to suffer riding on a huge bus that runs late  :hg :hg

Not particularly related, but traffic was causing issues on Coro Drive in the PM peak - my 411 was running about 15 minutes late by the time it terminated at UQ... Could have had a flow-on effect with respect to the inbound shuttles. No reason why the outbound ones would be delayed though...

Working in a location only accessible by bus has finally driven me off the system almost completely.

Hit the bus for the first time in weeks today, big mistake. My route 554, due 9:36 at Kuraby Winifred St, was approximately 24 minutes late - departing at 10:00AM.

The MyTransLink app showed service status as normal (green tick), and no notification was pushed.

I've basically given up now, and nearly always commute by car, carpooling with a neighbour who works near me.  The extra hour in my life is most welcome, as is being free of the iron hand of the last service in the evening when I have to work late to align with colleagues in Germany.  It is also rather nice no longer arriving at work or home hot and sweaty after the combined 1.7km walk (700 metres home to stop, 1km stop to work).

After years of pushing back against it, our family now has the 2nd car as well. In the end it was a case of "to hell with my beliefs", the evidence repeatedly showed that when I used public transport I was paying a time and comfort penalty that is increasingly unacceptable. It simply wasn't working for me and the extra time I have since giving up on PT speaks for itself.

Basically,  I came to the conclusion that I simply cannot rely on South East QLD public transport for my normal needs. Consequently I now  only use it on a discretionary basis, and then usually rail.  About the only service anywhere in QLD that actually compares favourably with what I have used in Europe, visiting even relatively minor cities like Braunschweig, Germany, is the G:Link light rail.

The S.E. busway would come close, except it is chaotic in operation, the timetables and PIDs are a work of fiction (due buses fail to appear, get ticked off on the PID, but nothing came - oh and the PIDs don't even bother showing Logan buses like the 555).  But, of course, to use the busway I have to use a pathetically unreliable hourly feeder that dies very early in the evening and is worse on the weekend - so in the car we go, and in the car we stay.

THAT is the reality of SEQ public transport, unless you live on a well serviced railway, the light rail, or near the busway or one of a handful of proper BUZ routes.

techblitz

my 5pm inbound 695 was about 7 mins late...no doubt due to traffic congestion around rothwell,kipparing......nevertheless it made up about 5 mins into sandate...and due to good connection gaps(7 mins) still had 2 minutes to get over to platform 2.....correct timetabling is the key in all of this..factoring in vehicle traffic at various hotspots and the routes routing......closely followed by realtime bus tracking with an observant translink....

ps: just taking a look at the 554 routing...this would be a similar route to the 680....hit by multiple traffic hotspots due to school / shopping traffic.....always predictably late certain times (6am-9am,3pm-6pm).....but ontime for others.....if the driver has to do return runs just increases residual delays.....

Clearly, the delays that are being reported are but a 'snapshot'   ...

Potentially, real time data might allow a reasonably accurate assessment of time and service performance, and from that some improvements hopefully.

Saw the 325 leading the 335 this afternoon along Webster Road. Either one bus was running well ahead of schedule or the other was really delayed.

As a regular user of those two services, I can tell you that this isn't a rare occurrence, both inbound in the morning, and outbound in the afternoon.

The 325 that I catch in the afternoon is consistently a few minutes late at Roma Street, presumably because it gets stuck in the CBD congestion. It doesn't do too badly along Kelvin Grove Road, due to the transit lane, but once the transit lane ends, and it has to move over to the right-hand lane after crossing Enoggera Creek, in order to turn into Edmondstone Street, it will typically be stuck in traffic here. It can then be delayed by the railway crossing at Newmarket Station, and depending on how accommodating cars are at the Thomas Street/Days Road intersection, it can be delayed here a minute or two as well. And then it has to deal with congestion along Webster Road, particular when it gets up to Stafford Road, although the 335 also has to contend with this as well.

When I catch the 335 in the Valley after transferring from the train, it typically gets stuck in the afternoon congestion around the Brunswick Street/St Pauls Terrace intersection up until the RBWH, and then gets stuck in the congestion along Newmarket Road (typically caused by cars parked along the road, requiring the traffic to merge into one lane.)

Since I get on/off these services around the Kedron area, I can't really comment too much on the rest of these routes journey out towards Taigum, although they do have some impact on the (un)reliability of the services in the morning. They regularly get caught in the congestion on Webster road/Grange Road, and then the 335 sometimes gets held up by congestion on Newmarket road. 325 usually does ok on Kelvin Grove Road, due to the transit lane, but can get caught up by traffic just before the Normanby entrance to the busway.

This is why I support the RBOT transit network in this area, by cutting the services in two at Chermside, and running a single service at a higher frequency between Chermside and the City, using the Busway from the RBWH to the city, it should make for a much more reliable, and potentially quicker journey, and has several opportunities for transferring to other services, if your destination isn't the CBD.

Translink had the same idea too. 335 became a Chermside-Strathpine Route. 325 became a HF route and continued to the city via the 335 route.

I'm well aware of the 335 delays :P The 335 outbound has to be one of the worst routes across Brisbane's northside when it comes to on time running. It is constantly and consistently 10 minutes late at the minimum into Chermside. Having it removed from Gympie Road all together would be far better for avoiding delays and gaining potential patronage. There are still other areas to be addressed but the Gympie Road routing should have been changed ages ago and I've been mentioning that for god knows how long now :P :P :P

The way the route should be run vs its current route. The 330 could also have a similar running pattern. For it to work the ped crossing must be removed from the southern side of the intersection.

335 has a sibling on the southside called the 460  :wi3
