City-Airport corridor can't afford delays hence why trains are priority in this area. And that's purely to prevent delays caused by the flat junctions at Bowen Hills, Eagle Junction, Airport spur and Northgate and single line running on the Doomben line (only one train can operate past Eagle Junction at any one time. Remember if either the Doomben bound or citybound service is delayed the next Doomben bound service blocks the entire subs in both directions as it waits at Eagle Junction station. In the past Doomben bound services have terminated at Eagle Junction and ran out of service to Northgate/Virginia to turn around to prevent blocking the subs) along with rostering issues created by the change in times.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't you solve this by adding in a passing loop somewhere on the Doomben line? Maybe the disconnected second platform at Ascot? Seems like a fairly easy thing to do to prevent what could be an enormous flow on effect...

Passing loop at Ascot has been disconnected from the network a number of years ago. Footbridge needs replacing, platform surface needs replacing and the BRC don't want people walking from the platform onto their property. Currently only 3 trains are needed to run the line on its existing timetable. Flexibility is also very very limited by having a passing loop so close to the terminus. And cost to upgrade and maintain.

A better solution would be (IMO) to duplicate the line to Clayfield. That way, if the inbound is late, the outbound can wait off the mainline at Clayfield instead. Would require an overpass built at the Hendra end of the platform, but the station itself is already an island ready for duplication.

Have just spent the weekend in Sydney and I can say that their rail and bus frequency (I can't comment on their overall bus network design) was truly "turn up and go".  Maximum wait of 7 mins the whole weekend from the airport and in and around the city.  I have not idea if any service was late or early as it just didn't matter.

The tap and go with card, phone, watch was just so easy.

^ At least our ticketing system will work better than anybody else's by this time next year.  That's something at least.

Even in Sydney, there are bus services that connect with metropolitan and interurban trains that are not part of the Opal network (eg Picton).  There are only a bare handful of situations like that up here that I can think of - basically the "regional" services out of Caboolture (to Kilcoy), Landsborough (to Maleny) and Nambour (to Maleny), and the Coochiemudlo passenger-only ferry (I'm excluding the Stradbroke ferries which are a bit different).  Apart from maybe the Coochie ferry, these will all be part of the new system.

Around the city is pretty good. Head out to the western suburbs and there are plenty of crappy hourly routes, just like here.
