Bus is carrying 2x as many people than trains. LRT getting excellent results on a relatively small line.

Most of those buses would be running half hourly or worse, yet achieving the most patronage overall.

It's the collective momentum of small improvements. I speculate you could add another 50-80 million trips p.a. though bus route improvements alone.

No great surprise that bus carries the most patronage in SEQ as trips.  There are a lot more bus routes and opportunities to use bus.  Rail should be carrying more passengers and the fact that it doesn't, really is a reflection of the poor frequency and poor feeder bus support.  In terms of km/passenger/trip rail would be highest.

SEQ Annual Patronage FY 2009/10 to 2022/23 - all modes

30th September 2023

Greetings

With the tabling of the Department of Transport and Main Roads-Annual Report 2022-2023 ( https://documents.parliament.qld.gov.au/tp/2023/5723T1533-4912.pdf ) we have updated our SEQ Annual Patronage (Public Transport) series.

For more detail see our RAIL Back On Track Forum at https://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=15339

During the financial year 2022/23 there was a turnaround and patronage increased.

Heavy rail needs improved frequency of service and better feeder bus services and active transport integration. The Citytrain network is an under-performer, mainly because of the poor frequency out of peak and poor feeder bus services. Buses running parallel to heavy rail is grossly inefficient and wastes valuable resources.  There is much scope for an improved public transport network in SEQ if there was the right political leadership.

Putting all hopes just in Cross River Rail is counter-productive. We need to start acting now.  We also think a worthwhile initiative would be an increase in the go card off-peak fare discount to encourage more passengers on underutilised services.

Best wishes,
Robert

SEQ Annual Patronage FY 2009/10 to 2021/22 - all modes

1st October 2022

Good Morning,

With the tabling of the Department of Transport and Main Roads-Annual Report 2021-2022 ( https://apps.parliament.qld.gov.au/find?id=5722T1355 ) we have updated our SEQ Annual Patronage (Public Transport) series.

During the financial year 2021-22 there continued to be an overall fall in patronage but significantly less than the previous two financial years. We expect to see this fall turnaround in 2022-23.

Coming out of the Covid-19 Pandemic all efforts must be directed at building back patronage.

Robert

The fact that our Govt s still think bus is a competitor to rail shows just shows how far we are from leading practice!

Update on Annual Public Transport Patronage for Queensland - Financial year 2022-23

14th October 2023

Thanks to Translink for the administrative release recently to RAIL Back On Track of the public transport patronage data for SEQ Bus, Rail, Ferry and Light Rail, and urban (regional bus) for Queensland for financial year 2022-23.

There is a lot of data and it is publicly available on our forum at https://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?board=91.0

Results are very encouraging.  Patronage is starting to return to near pre-pandemic levels, and looks set to maintain the positive growth momentum now underway and exceed pre-pandemic patronage levels in financial year 2023-24.

Some highlights:

Queensland Rail Citytrain all lines/sections are back to positive growth. Brisbane Airtrain had the strongest relative patronage growth, followed by outer Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast lines.

https://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?board=109.0

====

SEQ bus - all operators had good to strong relative patronage growth.

https://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?board=110.0

====

Ferry - TfB (BCC) good overall patronage growth has finally returned.

https://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=15349.0

- Southern Moreton Bay Islands Ferry continued to show patronage growth.

https://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=15350.0

====

Gold Coast Light Rail patronage has returned to pre-pandemic patronage levels

https://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=15348.0

====

Regional Queensland Urban bus had overall positive relative patronage growth.

https://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=15354.0

====

All modes are 'back to black' (growth). It is important that the positive patronage growth is maintained.
Service frequency improvements are as important as infrastructure.  It is pointless if we don't utilise what we have properly.

Best wishes,
Robert
