SEQ Annual Patronage FY 2009/10 to 2021/22 - all modes

1st October 2022

Good Morning,

With the tabling of the Department of Transport and Main Roads-Annual Report 2021-2022 ( https://apps.parliament.qld.gov.au/find?id=5722T1355 ) we have updated our SEQ Annual Patronage (Public Transport) series.

For more detail see our RAIL Back On Track Forum at https://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=14832.0

During the financial year 2021-22 there continued to be an overall fall in patronage but significantly less than the previous two financial years. We expect to see this fall turnaround in 2022-23.

Coming out of the Covid-19 Pandemic all efforts must be directed at building back patronage.  Heavy rail needs improved frequency of service and better feeder bus services and active transport integration. The Citytrain network is an under-performer, mainly because of the poor frequency out of peak and poor feeder bus services. Buses running parallel to heavy rail is grossly inefficient and wastes valuable resources.  There is much scope for an improved public transport network in SEQ if there was the right political leadership.

Putting all hopes just in Cross River Rail is counter-productive. We need to start acting now.  We also think a worthwhile initiative would be an increase in the go card off-peak fare discount to encourage more passengers on underutilised services.

Best wishes,
Robert
