Jobs boost as Bundamba train station upgrade takes major step forward

The $34 million upgrade of Bundamba train station has taken a major step forward with the tender for the project awarded to Queensland's Hutchinson Builders.

The move means early works will start soon, providing local commuters with a more modern, safe and accessible public transport service.

Member for Bundamba Lance McCallum said the investment was part of the Palaszczuk Government's Station Accessibility Upgrade Program that had already delivered 13 station upgrades across the state.

"We're upgrading our local Bundamba train station to provide improved access for all commuters, particularly people with disability, the elderly, those travelling with prams or luggage, and people recovering from injury," Mr McCallum said.

"Works will deliver general safety improvements and brand-new station infrastructure including a suspended walkway to the new Upper Mining Street passenger set-down; more accessible parking; a new station overpass providing direct access through the upgraded station precinct; new lift-accessible footbridges; fully raised full-length platforms; and extended platform shelters.

"This will support more than 200 good local jobs during construction and deliver better public transport services for our local Bundamba community.

"This includes upgraded customer facilities like accessible toilets; disability-compliant ticket windows; improved seating; hearing augmentation loops; tactile floor indicators; new way-finding signage; information screens; and CCTV and lighting.

"We're also supporting our local bike and scooter users, with new active transport enclosures providing safe and convenient storage options."

I think P&R at these locations would be suboptimal to TOD construction because the patronage you would get from TOD would likely be higher than what a car park could provide. We also have a housing crisis, so whatever housing supply increase happened at these locations would just fly off the plan. There also is limited space to fit car parking.

Cycling or eScooting to these locations are viable options, as is walking.

Somewhere like Sandgate Road should have a BUZ on it, negating the need to drive to stations.

A stop-gap interim solution would be to install eScoot and Ride at these stations. This would be revenue positive, the cost paid for by the eScooter company.

Parking at Albion was to be provided with the building redevelopment. No building redevelopment. No extra parking.

Unfortunately, the opening of the TOD in Ferny Grove has been delayed and won't be finished until the end of 2024. Apparently, businesses and investors are getting compensated.

This debacle also brings to mind the delay with the Albion TOD as well. Both State Government iniatives going really slow or no where.

Anyway the developments of TODs in Qld are basically a shambles compared to other places in Australia and around the world. False promises from the government as well as from private industry.

Albion station developments are now in a flood zone with the water line getting up to the overpass and to the lowest part past the servo down the road. IIRC the commuter car park was to be 6 stores deep and there was secondary localised flooding on the western side from back flows/properties and systems east of the railway line. Council has also changed town planning over the years. IIRC it's already on its 3rd revision and it was a 15 year contract with the state. Toombul station has similar problems now with development delays west of the station due to flooding. From what I've heard some property developers have been slowly buying properties west of the station over the years in the hope of merging them into large residential buildings/townhouses but have since sold them off after the most recent floods had 1m of water going through. There are pretty much universal delays to all projects along the railway corridor where there was or close to flooding. Nudgee is another one that comes to mind with the sports ground already running a year behind schedule with less facilities being delivered and a higher price tag than anticipated.

Queensland Rail wants to hear from customers to help design the best alternatives for travel, while Burpengary station temporarily closes for its important upgrade.

Burpengary station will be rebuilt to modern accessibility standards as part of a $53 million upgrade though the Queensland Government's Station Accessibility Upgrade Program.

Station platforms will be raised to make the platform and train door level, reducing the gap making boarding safer and easier.

Customers in wheelchairs, with walking frames, parents with prams and people with luggage will also be able to catch a lift to a station overpass and then onto platforms which is a great accessibility outcome. 

Other improvements include upgraded customer facilities like accessible toilets, disability-compliant ticket windows, improved seating and extended platform shelters, improved bicycle storage and new security cameras.

We're also installing hearing augmentation loops, tactile floor indicators, new wayfinding signage, information screens and better security through CCTV and lighting upgrades.

In order to expedite the upgrade, Burpengary Station will close during construction and Queensland Rail wants to consult with customers about alternative travel arrangements.

Queensland Rail is planning a replacement bus service from Morayfield to Narangba according to the regular timetable. But to make sure we've got you covered, Queensland Rail has launched a survey that asks customers directly about their travel patterns and how best they can be supported when the upgrade is progressing from January next year.

Customers would already have noticed the first glimpses of this exciting project with site establishment works well underway at Burpengary station.

Finally, they are doing station closures for the upgrades.  The previous situation where the upgrades carried on for years as stations kept open was just stupid, costly and unsafe in many cases. 

I raised this a number of times with the authorities over the years.  Glad to see finally listened.

Yeerongpilly station to close for upgrade

On Monday 18 September, Yeerongpilly station will close for Cross River Rail upgrade works.

The station upgrade will include new station buildings, an additional third platform, new and upgraded station entry points, a new platform canopy for better weather protection, and improved accessibility features and parking.

During the closure, trains will run express through Yeerongpilly station in both directions, and the pedestrian overpass over Fairfield Road will remain open.

There will be plenty of alternative options to travel from Yeerongpilly including bus routes 104, 105, 108 and StationLink route 109 from Green Street near the station.

If you prefer to travel by train, Yeronga and Moorooka stations are open.

Greetings,

Been confirmed that  Banyo, Buranda, Lindum and Morningside stations will undergo accessibility upgrades.
It is noted that all four of these upgrades include full length full height platforms.  Essential in our view, well done.

Also the stations will close during the upgrades in 2024.  This is something that RAIL Back On Track has advocated for because doing upgrades with 'open stations' means the project is more costly as it can take years, it is a lot safer for passengers to close the stations, albeit a little inconvenient but UP and/or DOWN buses are provided as needed.   It is more cost effective overall which means more upgrades in time can be done with the savings.

In all seriousness though, I hope particularly for Lindum that rail replacement services and stops are well planned given the school children usage. The areas and streets around the station and the preceding stations (Hemmant, Wynnum North) are not really ideal in peak times for more vehicle and pedestrian traffic moving around.

Morningside and Buranda.  Maybe do the Skyrail between the 2 at the same time.  Logic over funding I know.

As part of the Palaszczuk Government's Big Build, this year's budget allocated close to $300 million towards five station accessibility upgrades on the Queensland Rail network, including Lindum, Morningside and Banyo Stations.

A construction contract for major works has now been awarded to Laing O'Rourke for Morningside, Banyo, Buranda and Lindum stations.

Already activity has begun at the four stations. Enabling works are underway at Lindum and Buranda stations and customers will see site establishment in the coming months. Geotechnical activities and overhead line and service location works have already been carried out at Morningside station. Customers will see piling, signalling construction and site establishment soon.

Similar works are also underway at Banyo station with survey activities and associated platform works to continue in the coming weeks, including the removal of the heritage shelter currently on platform 1.

Lindum, Morningside and Banyo customers can look forward to the station reopening throughout the second half of 2024, pending construction and weather conditions and Buranda station will be ready for customers in mid-2025.

The QR project page for Buranda states it will reopen in second half of 2024, like all the others...

Any thoughts on why Buranda is looking at 18 month closure vs less than 12 months for others?

^ I have confirmed 2025 is correct.  There was typo on the QR web site.

It is a more complex project, there are some local complications as I understand it.

With the most recent announcements, here is my revised "Inaccessibility Map"

This represents stations without confirmed upgrades.
Note I have not included Albion and Wooloowin in the upgrade list because they seem to be stuck on pause.
I included all stations that form part of Logan & GC Faster rail by default.



11 stations are completely inaccessible.

-Bindha
-Traveston
-Yandina
-Wilston
-Riverview
-Gailes

Theoretically Yandina and Traveston are 'easy wins' since they don't need lifts, just compliant ramps. Do what was done at Cooran. And Bindha just needs be closed prior to CRR timetable changes.

With Eagle Junction to become a more prominent interchange station post CRR, especially for Beenleigh/GC passengers changing for the airport, I feel this needs an upgrade and modernisation long before the Olympics.

I have raised the issue of a 'northern interchange' with Translink and it is under review.
