Sunshine Coast News --> 'Timely reminder' for drivers: rail line closed for unknown amount of time after bridge strike

QuoteQueensland Rail is working to repair a damaged bridge on the state's main train line but doesn't know when it will be fixed, as passengers are inconvenienced and freight services are interrupted.

The bridge above Brockhurst Road in Nambour, which has a signed clearance height of 4.7m, was struck by a vehicle during the weekend.

It was noticed during a routine track inspection on Sunday, when the line was closed for weekend maintenance, including at nearby Blackall Terrace.

Workers were despatched to start repairs immediately and the 8km section of line between Nambour and Yandina has been closed since. ...

Couriermail --> Double trouble for commuters as train wait times worsen $

QuoteThe number of South East Queensland train services running behind schedule has doubled, with track failures and overhead line outages being blamed for the delays.

New data has revealed that between October and December last year, roughly 10 per cent – or one in ten train services – in the state's South East did not run on time.

In comparison, less than half the number of services – or 4.3 per cent – were delayed in the prior three month period between July and August. ...

Question on Notice
No. 173
Asked on 15 March 2023

MR J LISTER ASKED MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT AND MAIN ROADS (HON M BAILEY)

QUESTION:

With reference to delays to the Brisbane train network on 8 December 2022—
Will the Minister advise (a) details of what infrastructure was damaged, (b) the cause of the
damage, (c) the time that the damage occurred, (d) the time taken to restore services and
(e) how this outage relates to the further power outages on 13 and 28 December 2022?

ANSWER:

I thank the Member for Southern Downs for the question.

At approximately 3.30 am on 8 December 2022, severe storm activity damaged a multi-wire cable
at Bowen Hills that connects track circuits and signals. As a result, delays were experienced
across the rail network. Queensland Rail crews worked hard to successfully restore the network
safely and as quick as possible, with normal operations resuming on all lines at approximately
4.44 pm on 8 December 2022.

Queensland Rail continues to invest heavily in the maintenance of its network to ensure it is safe
and reliable for all customers. Rapid response crews and extra equipment are strategically
located at hubs across the network to be deployed quickly in the event of an unplanned disruption.
I am advised that the incident on 8 December 2022 was as a result of severe storm activity
experienced across all of South East Queensland and does not relate to the overhead power line
incidents on 13 and 28 December 2022.

265 which was a Roma street terminator had a door fail at Bowen Hills this morning. Even though it took 4 minutes to resolve it has delayed the Springfield service by 11 minutes due to the crosses of inbound/outbound services at Roma Street P8/9/10 now being out. Other services are still being impacted from 3-10 minutes as a result.

It's a similar reason why Cleveland and Airport services skip stations to maintain city slots at Park Road/South Brisbane junctions.

Signalling issues and train faults.

A frequent cause of service disruptions, cancellations and delays in service of late.

For interest went back and reviewed the last 100 Citytrain service disruptions.

53% were due to signalling issues.

18% were due to train faults.

29% other causes (security, delays in preparing train for service, broken down non-Citytrain trains, wet weather, congestion etc.).

I would imagine some of the ones that are 'congestion' would be due to the propagation of delays from Signaling faults.

It's hard to say. Take eagle junction. Any late running to the inbound service has the outbound service blocking the entire subs. Airport is the same with the Cleveland train being held at Toombul as the airport train crosses in front. Same with outbound. Delay the outbound. Delay the Cleveland service and the inbound cross on the single track delays the inbound meaning it has to run express to maintain its slot through the inner core. Another problem with Cleveland is park road where terminators can delay their crosses and it repeats.

A few delays should be building soon on the mains through the city. Ipswich/Springfield trains are queuing back to Toowong and there's a dead runner 716 in the middle too. Roma Street terminators will also be affected due to the queue on the western lines. Don't expect Translink to tweet anything about it.

I boarded this train at Goodna and we just sat there. After 9 minutes Guard announced 'door problems '. Departed Goodna 12 minutes adrift.

On yesterday morning's commute (Monday 29th May) I picked to transfer to the train rather than second bus at Buranda. Got onto the platform to find everyone walking towards me which was immediately clarified by the repeat manual PA advising next service was 3 car and to move to front of platform. Based on prior experience I went all the way down for the usually quieter front carriage.

"1"A25 (at least by GTFS timetable) arrived 4 minutes late operated by IMU 107 with graffiti covering the front desto. Front carriage was standing entire length of aisle and I squeezed in near the second door. The load thinned out enough at Park Road that we weren't on top of each other, however, we continued to dwell on the platform long enough for the doors to automatically close. Another few minutes later at 07:58 (14 min after scheduled departure time) we get the PA advising that this service is now terminating here and for all customers to exit the train (I don't remember a reason being given). With the 3 car stopping point aligned with 6 car, essentially the entire train was along the narrow section of platform 2 which was very inadequate for the number of people suddenly dumped. Being beside the door I managed to get down to the main section prior to most getting out.

During the dwell onboard I was watching the rest of the line on AnyTrip. The BH service (DMT9) only slightly behind was quickly stuck at the signal just short of Park Road. The following Shorncliffe (1A27) had been sent express from Cannon Hill (Where it was already 4min late) to Park Road. With hindsight it probably would have made sense for my 3 car set to have been the one to go express given the inevitable boarding delays, although given the early termination who knows what other factors were in play.

Once off the train the Park Road station staff did a great job with communication and a decent proportion of the train got onto the now crowded FG train a minute or so later. 107 departed as soon as everyone was off. Wanting to watch the situation unfold (and have a bit of space) I hung back and got onto DMT9 about a minute later with fair number of people having the same idea. I was in last carriage this time which still had a handful around the doors as we departed. As it arrived there was another PA advising anyone for the Shorncliffe line that next train was only 2 minutes away. Arriving at South Bank FG was still on Platform 3.

Never a dull moment with SEQ PT  :hg

Track fault? Services have not resumed. Trains are still being held at stations so I don't know where Translink has their information from. Sherwood hasn't had a train north in over 20 minutes with only southbound trains permitted through (should be 2 or 3 out of service trains between Sherwood and Graceville). But good updates Translink.

NGR751 D011 still hasn't made it over the Sherwood level crossing and Corinda is showing all platforms occupied in a sea of red lines.

Edit: Change that as 751 and others are now on their way.

Usual timely, clear and consistent communications from Translink and Queensland Rail this evening.

Reports from Central station of lengthy delays for services north (particularly Caboolture, Sunshine Coast and Redcliffe lines). Announcements have so far mentioned Bowen Hills power issue, then changed to Roma Street power issue with a fire - meanwhile Translink is only posting about delays to specific services from previous bridge strike at Boovall - and now announcements back to power issue at Bowen Hills. :fp:

Update - Translink finally catches up

Last reviewed: Monday 11 Dec 2023 at 6.09pm
Caboolture, Redcliffe Peninsula and Sunshine Coast line trains travelling away from Central are delayed up to 30 minutes due to an incident requiring emergency services near Roma Street.

Currently on a Ferny Grove train at Kingston. Was due to depart 10 minutes ago, but apparently there's some kind of power issue between Kuraby and Sunnybank.

No ETA, and can't see anything on TL socials yet, or the MyTranslink App.

Edit: on the move, approaching Fruitgrove now, using the middle road. A lot of confused pax waiting on P3. Doesn't QR announce platform changes? 🙄

HappyTrainGuy

It's automatic as it's based on the signalling system. If wrong roading/on forms there's no announcement as it's not a programmed movement. Hence the paper work. Depending on the time of day the announcements can be quieter or if it's a really late change it may not be announced due to the late timing or combined with the arrival message timing. It's also quite interesting how many people simply do not listen to the messages. Apparently eagle Junction inbound is a hot spot for psa abuse in peak as station staff will announce to board earlier services well in advance as thru services are running express to maintain the city slots. Platform staff will even walk up to people and mention this as a way to reduce confrontations but this doesn't always work as they are also required to be at their post for NGR services in both directions. Some drivers will even turn the desto boards off on the NGR's.
