Seriously, WTF is the use of a bus service that finishes at 6pm???  :frs: :frs: :frs:

Do yourself a favour and don't look at some of the other Gold Coast routes.  A number don't even operate after 4pm.

JACOBS WELL BUS SERVICES

TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House, the urgent need to provide a regular daily bus service for the residents of Jacobs Well and the cane lands community more broadly.

The City of Gold Coast has committed $11 million over 5 years to improve the transport options for residents in this area but we are still waiting to hear from the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, regarding the Queensland State governments contribution.

Jacobs Well is an important hub within the Northern Gold Coast and is adjacent to the region identified as the area that will accommodate the largest proportion of the sub regions planned greenfield growth with Jacobs Well undergoing significant population growth in its own right. As such, Jacobs Well and the cane lands need to be supported by appropriate infrastructure.

With the 2022 Queensland State Government budget due to be brought down on the 21st of June, now is the time to act.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all in its power to ensure the Department of Transport and Main Roads work with the City of Gold Coast to ensure funding is approved to provide a regular daily bus service, to enable people to connect to the transport hub of Ormeau and the nearby Pimpama shopping precinct.

ADDITIONAL BUS SERVICES BETWEEN ORMEAU RAILWAY STATION AND COOMERA RAILWAY STATION

TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House, the urgent need to upgrade the bus services between Ormeau Station and Coomera Station which includes services throughout the Pimpama area.

This area is identified as being at the centre of the fastest growing region in Queensland. Increased bus routes, an extension of hours and more frequent bus services are therefore essential for the provision of services to the residents of this fast-growing area.

The City of Gold Coast has committed $11 million over 5 years to improve the transport options for residents in this area but we are still waiting to hear from the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, regarding the Queensland State Government's contribution.

The Ormeau-Pimpama-Coomera area continues to grow at more than three times the City of Gold Coast average and, as such, must be serviced by the appropriate public transport infrastructure.

With the 2022 Queensland State Government budget due to be brought down on the 21st of June, now is the time to act.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all in its power to ensure the Department of Transport and Main Roads work with the City of Gold Coast to ensure funding is approved for the upgrade of bus services between Ormeau Railway Station and Coomera Railway Station, with more routes and more regular services that start earlier and finish later, as a matter of urgency.

I'm a little surprised that as of the time of this post, Ormeau-Coomera has received 342 signatures, Jacobs Well 324, but Beenleigh-Ormeau only 80.

I would've thought there's far more people living in the Beenleigh-Ormeau catchment than Jacob's Well, or perhaps Jacob's Well residents are more vocal.

Either way, I'm still not convinced about the merits of a full-time bus service for Jacob's Well, maybe some kind of DRT, though.

MORE BUSES FOR THE NORTHERN GOLD COAST

This budget, the Palaszczuk Government has committed $16.4 million to deliver new or improved bus services on the northern Gold Coast over the next five years.
We've heard from residents in the Ormeau, Pimpama and Coomera areas that a greater frequency of buses was needed and that's exactly what we'll deliver.
The trial will run in partnership with Gold Coast City Council.

I have asked now much they spent on Sunshine Coast bus services with the most recent additions.
Somehow I reckon it wouldn't be 2/3 (Sunny Coast/Gold Coast) of $16.4 million.
No reply from the Minister.

Gold Coast Bulletin --> Surfside Buslines to be affected by 6-hour strike on December 20 after pay talks break down $

QuoteGold Coast bus services will be hit by strike action on Tuesday after talks between management and unions on a pay offer broke down.

Surfside drivers and cleaners who are seeking wage increases in line with the rising cost of living will go on strike for six hours from 4am to 10am, with knock-on effects expected throughout the day.

Transport Workers Union (TWU) Queensland Director of Organising Jared Abbott said the workers were at a breaking point.

"Queensland bus driver wages are at the bottom end of the scale across the country and internationally, and we must invest now in order to maintain a strong and effective public transport network across Queensland," he said.

"The strike shows a failure of bargaining for public transport workers in Queensland." ...

Gold Coast Bulletin --> Main Beach driverless bus route ended after months of controversy from residents and businesses $

QuoteMain Beach businesses and residents are rejoicing after the end of a bus they say was "an exercise in complete futility".

The controversial driverless bus, which was on trial to ferry passengers on a 2.4km route through Main Beach, has been discontinued.

Residents first noticed the trial was ended after the bus stops were repainted as car parks on Tedder Ave earlier this week.

A trial of the driverless bus – named the Gold Coast Smart Shuttle – began in late 2021 as part of a joint initiative between Gold Coast City Council and RACQ.

Fewer than 4000 passengers used the bus during the 12-month trial where it travelled more than 6000km.

The trial costs about $250,0000 which was split between the Gold Coast City Council and RACQ.

Main Beach Bakery owner Wayne McCrae welcomed the end of the controversial bus.

"It's about time," he said.

"All it's done is upset everyone in the community." ...

Potential replacement for Routes 198 and 192 maybe?  :fo:
Negative people... have a problem for every solution. Posts are commentary and are not necessarily endorsed by RAIL Back on Track or its members.

Jonno

Why our governments insist on trying every mad idea except prioritising cycling and trunk routes with integrated filler routes where required!!

SurfRail

These things always were pointless other than as tech demonstrators.  A normal bus already runs up and down Tedder Ave every 15 minutes in both directions and actually takes people somewhere useful, and another normal bus runs up and down Main Beach Pde at the same headways.
Ride the G:

verbatim9

They could of spent the money on a couple new electric buses instead and put on that route via Main beach to Seaworld.

SurfRail

Well no, since $250,000 will buy you about 1/4 of one electric bus at existing rates, and the money isn't contributed by the State.  This was only ever about research and development, which is fine.  If the costs were split equally between GCCC and RACQ then GCCC's $125,000 would have paid for around one bus stop upgrade.
Ride the G:

SurfRail

https://translink.com.au/updates/199786

New Ormeau / Pimpama / Coomera area timetables (for the 721, 722 and 726), including peak hour frequencies of 15 minutes  and considerably better weekend and off-peak services (4 services a day on the 721 on weekends becomes 12 services a day).  No route changes that I can see.

I am not sure if this is the full package GCCC and the State were originally working on, which as I understand it included more coverage of the area, tweaks to existing alignments and a Jacobs Well service.  However, this is better than what I was expecting for these 3.

Possibly this is being paid for in part by scaling back Route 700 from the same date - https://translink.com.au/updates/187091

(This all assumes they can find the drivers and that there is no ongoing industrial disruption.)

Ride the G:

Gazza

Damn so does that mean Trams don't coordinate with every bus?

SurfRail

In practice it might not make much of a difference since only in ideal traffic conditions (ie at times the tram isn't running every 7.5 minutes) would the 700 not be completely bunched up.  It is noticeably worse whenever I'm back down there now, although that isn't often on a weekday outside of public holidays.  You need bus priority south of Tallebudgera Creek to fix the issues.  Even then it will likely become less of a problem once GCLR Stage 3 opens as the cycle time will reduce even further.

Media Release
Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Mark Bailey

Better bus services for northern Gold Coasters

Northern Gold Coast bus users will benefit from a significant increase in frequency with almost 800 new services per week to be added from Monday 13 February.

The improvements for routes 721 (Coomera to Ormeau via Upper Coomera),722 (Coomera to Ormeau via Coomera River) and 726 (Coomera station to Coomera Waters) form stage one of a joint Queensland Government and City of Gold Coast $16.4 million trial of new and upgraded bus services.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said improved services across northern Gold Coast buses would be rolled out progressively.

"The northern Gold Coast is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia, and we want to make sure we've got enough services to keep up with demand," Mr Bailey said.

"Whether it's getting to work, school or anywhere else, we're making it easier to get around the Gold Coast.

"Our commitment to the Gold Coast doesn't stop there either – we're getting on with the projects that matter, like the Coomera Connector, Gold Coast Light Rail, and Pimpama, Hope Island and Merrimac train stations."

Gold Coast-based Palaszczuk Government Minister Meaghan Scanlon said more frequent services was a win for Gold Coasters.

"Buses on a number of routes will be running at a higher frequency in morning and afternoon peaks, which is great news for everyone on the Gold Coast," Ms Scanlon said.

"We know previous improvements to route 722 resulted in a 250 per cent growth in patronage in its first six months of operation, and we expect these latest improvements will have a similar impact as buses become a more convenient and viable travel option.

"Over the next four years, the Palaszczuk Labor Government is investing nearly $5.2 billion in transport and road projects for the Gold Coast, supporting 4,300 good, secure jobs.

"We're delivering better services all over the Gold Coast, helping Queenslanders spend more time enjoying our great lifestyle."

Routes 721, 722 and 726 service key locations including Coomera and Ormeau stations, local shopping centres, Gold Coast Institute of TAFE and numerous state schools and colleges.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said as part of the package of bus improvements, future route changes are also planned to ensure frequent bus services will meet trains at the new Cross River Rail Pimpama station once it opens.

"Partnering with the State Government on this important initiative will greatly improve the public transport networks in our northern suburbs,'' said Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate.

"To see 779 additional weekly bus services in the fastest growing are of the country is fantastic.

"These services will provide reliable links with heavy and light rail services as well as key schools in the area. I look forward to joining Minister Bailey to switch on the ignition for the first bus on these new routes shortly.''

Hours of operation and frequency on routes 721, 722 and 726:

Route 721

•           15 minutes - 7am to 8:30am (weekday)

•           30 minutes - 6am to 7am, 8:30am to 9am and 3pm to 7pm (weekday)

•           Hourly - 9am to 3pm (weekday)

•           Weekend: Hourly - 7am to 6:30pm

Route 722

•           15 minutes - 6am to 9am and 2pm to 7:30pm (weekday)

•           30 minutes - 9am to 2pm and 7:30pm to 10pm (weekday)

•           Weekend: 30 minutes - 7am to 7pm

Route 726

•           15 minutes - 6am to 8:30am (weekday)

•           30 minutes - 8:30am to 9:45am and 3:30pm to 7pm (weekday)

•           Hourly - 9:45am to 3:30pm (weekday)

•           Weekend: Hourly - 6:30am to 6:45pm

Service improvements across northern Gold Coast buses will be progressively rolled out over the first three years of the five-year bus service improvement package trial.

This at least clarifies it is only stage 1, but from what the Minister has said the balance elements might not happen for another 2-3 years (ie once CRR and/or Pimpama station open).  On top of that there will be a need to do something for Hope Island when it opens.  Less of an imperative to do a lot for Merrimac, but Worongary is growing and Merrimac would be the nearest alternative station to Nerang.

In general I'm hopeful this all goes well, which will reinforce the case to upgrade other bus services on the Gold Coast and in the wider region to run more often for more of the day.

Gold Coast Bulletin --> Relief for Gold Coast bus users after breakthrough talks on eve of strike action $

QuoteGOLD COAST bus services are expected to run largely as normal on Friday after planned strike action was called off after last-ditch talks.

However the strike is still going ahead south of the border at Tweed Heads.

James Saltmer, General Manager – South East Queensland for operator Kinetic, on Thursday evening told the Bulletin that only minimal disruption was now expected on Gold Coast services after a "productive" meeting with Transport Workers Union (TWU) representatives.

"Following a productive bargaining meeting, by mutual agreement the TWU has advised it will withdraw planned protected action on Friday 17 February," Mr Saltmer said.

"Some disruption to Gold Coast services may occur however this will be minimised.

"Disruptions to Tweed services are still anticipated with protected action by an independent bargaining representative proceeding. ...

ADDITIONAL BUS SERVICES BETWEEN BEENLEIGH RAILWAY STATION AND ORMEAU RAILWAY STATION

TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House, the urgent need to upgrade the bus services between Beenleigh Railway Station and Ormeau Railway Station, which includes services throughout the Jacobs Ridge area (the 728 service) and Ormeau Hills area (the 729 service). The funding was included in the June 2022 Queensland State Budget, yet the services have not been upgraded.

Both before and since other services (the 721 and 722 services between Ormeau and Coomera Train Stations), were upgraded on the 13th of February 2023, both the 728 and 729 services have had bus services cancelled at short notice or bus stops missed on the route.

The funding was made available in the 2022 Queensland State Budget, for these services, and the people of the Northern Gold Coast have been patient enough. Now is the time for the State Government to act, even if it means contracting another local bus service operator, to provide these urgently needed service upgrades.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to do all in its power to ensure the Department of Transport and Main Roads assure that the upgrade of the 728 and 729 bus services between Beenleigh Railway Station and Ormeau Railway Station, are delivered, as a matter of urgency.

====

This is happening across all bus jurisdictions, the general constant service cancellations as not enough drivers. The Gold Coast bus network is in tatters.

JACOBS WELL BUS SERVICES

TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House, the urgent need to provide a regular daily bus service for the residents of Jacobs Well area. The funding was included in the June 2022 Queensland State Budget, yet the service has not yet been provided.

Jacobs Well is an important hub within the Northern Gold Coast and is adjacent to the region identified as the area that will accommodate the largest proportion of the sub regions planned greenfield growth with Jacobs Well undergoing significant population growth. As such, Jacobs Well and the cane lands need to be supported by appropriate transport infrastructure.

The 721 and 722 services between Ormeau and Coomera Train Stations, were upgraded on the 13th of February 2023 but, once again, Jacobs Well and the cane lands were left without a service of any sort.

Now is the time for the State Government to act, even if it means contracting another local bus service operator, to provide these urgently needed service upgrades.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to do all in its power to ensure the Department of Transport and Main Roads work to assure that a regular daily bus service is provided, to enable people to connect to the transport hub of Ormeau Train Station and nearby Pimpama shopping precinct is delivered, as a matter of urgency.

Sent to all outlets:

Public transport is in serious trouble on the Gold Coast, and elsewhere.

4th March 2023

Good Morning,

The constant failure of the bus network to deliver timetable services continues.

There were 211 reported bus service disruptions for Queensland on the 3rd March 2023 (see > https://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=15050.0 for the ongoing record).

Disgruntled Gold Coast residents have been forced to start some Queensland Parliament E- Petitions to express their concerns with the failure to deliver promised bus services on the Gold Coast ( https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/Work-of-the-Assembly/Petitions/Petition-Details?id=3873 and https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/Work-of-the-Assembly/Petitions/Petition-Details?id=3874 ). This is no surprise to us, as we predicated the promised services would not be able to be delivered.

We now observe that the Coomera Connector proposed road corridor makes no allowance for a future upgrade (track amplification) of the Gold Coast railway. ( Gold Coast Bulletin --> Coomera Connector plans show no room allocated for possible additional rail tracks https://www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au/news/gold-coast/coomera-connector-plans-show-no-room-allocated-for-possible-additional-rail-tracks/news-story/3b5fe4ed04131d17831535b93510b77a  ).  There is zero chance of a new alignment with the  general rapid development underway.  It is now or never.

Even proper future proofing station layouts to allow expresses to run through while all stoppers are at the station would be better than nothing. Gold Coast commuters are in for a big let down when CRR opens. Their journey times are not going to be quicker at all. Interesting to read the spin from Government in the above article, babbling on about  the ' Gold Coast Faster Rail project ' which has nothing much to do with the lack of corridor preservation on the Goldie.

No, complete lack of vision and forward thought sadly in my view. Apathy, lack of vision and incompetence rules.

The Queensland State Government is way out of its depth now.  They should have moved years ago to establish a proper public transport authority, and moved rail planning out of the roads obsessed DTMR.  All that his happening now is the propagation of failure due to poor rail planning, not only on the Gold Coast but also the Sunshine Coast.

Sad hey ...

Best wishes,
Robert

Given the fairly limited population density in the area, DRT would seem more appropriate right now.
