Firstly, sorry for no pictures as I was driving and on my own.

Heaps of work for the extra bridge over the North Pine.

Bridge over Dohles Rocks Rd has proceeded dramatically. Both approaches nearly complete, Southern one ready for bridge beams. 3 of 4 pylons ready for beams, fourth one in the process of having the headstock formworked.

Bridge over Brays Rd, approaches are fairly well formed, one pylon having its headstock formed, the second awaiting the formwork (piles and rebar in place).

No messing around (aside from the 100+ year delayed start)  ;D

Queensland Rail

Petrie station customers please be aware of the following car park changes in place from today.

For approximately 18 months, the car park on the eastern side of Petrie station will be temporarily relocated during the Moreton Bay Rail Link station upgrade works.

We please ask customers with a disability use the existing western car park, accessible via Anzac Avenue during this time.

CCTV and lighting has been installed in the temporary car park.

For more info please visit: http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/moretonbayrail or call 1800 096 821.

Noticed stacks of concrete sleepers totally about about 200 next to Dohles Rocks Rd work site.

I think that particular contractor is a bit too keen  ;D

Just to pipe up, but S2K should've been 4 tracks from the start, not 3.
And been in a tunnel with 140km/h running, and taken in trinder park as well. No need for underground stations though.

Not a great photo.  It's a snapshot from my dashcam taken on Saturday at Dohles Rocks Road.

The two northern spans of the bridge over Dohles Rocks Rd are in place. Remaining two spans over the next two nights.

Random piles of sleepers still there but I think some have been moved/removed.

The crystal ball can probably be pulled out right now..
The similarities of springfield and mbrl lines are pretty amazing
Both around the same distance to thier "connector" stations (darra/petrie)
Both are fast growing suburbs hellbent on keeping that stupidly bus unfriendly "cul de sac" style street layout....only further encouraging kiss and ride /park and ride usage.
Both have around half the national/state average of " no vehicle ownership" (2/3%)
Demographically very simlar....a university or educational development wouldnt go astray up @NL

mbrl will probably do little to relieve vehicle congestion around the north lakes commercial hub..due to so many people owning vehicles and shop hopping will be much easier via vehicle....ultimately slowing down the connecting rail buses...this will be a near certainty...
They better plan the rail connector services carefully....dont want another 522 now do we :P
Also a certaintly that mbrl will reduce traffic between NL/KR and the city...

It wasn't that built last time I went past it, wow time flies

Rumour mill is saying university campus to be built on the old petrie mill site.

Right next to petrie station. They shouldn't need to build many car parks (but will probably build thousands).

aldonius

Interesting. Any idea who's backing that, or will it be another SBIT-type high-end TAFE?

Makes absolutely perfect sense...catches caboolture/SC/KR students.....i think there  still be quite a few who would still drive to campus though. Hopefully this goes ahead!

State Government owns the land as far as I can find out.

Overheard from a co worker who has lived in the area his entire life and knows pretty much everyone over 40 in the suburb. I did see a local news article last week that briefly mentioned it too but can't find it right now.

Common Sense stops at the NSW border.  ;)

Yes, but the cane toads are getting better with time as the southern influence takes increases, one day they will even work out how to change their clocks twice a year.

But the curtains will fade and my cows will be confused!

Had to get in first  :-r

And perhaps one day people living in NSW, Victoria and the southeastern parts of Queensland will realise how ridiculous it is to have daylight savings in a State that extends north almost to 10º latitude. :fp:  There's a reason why none of the three States/Territories occupying the northern half of this vast continent have instituted daylight savings on a permanent basis.

Old Northern Road

The reason being that the 3 northern States/Territories are the least educated.

I concur. DST makes sense in the South not the North. I prefer the state border to splitting Queensland into two zones. Moving to UTC+10.5 all year round I think is a more feasible way to get the east coast on the same time all year.

Gazza

Not^ really....Not enough winter daylight hours in the southern states to shift by 30 mins year round.

It appears that the structures to support the full length shade canopy for the platforms have been installed at Murrumba Downs Station. Similar to the ones at Darra in the right of the photo.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Darra_Railway_Station,_Queensland,_Sep_2012.JPG

There has been a large crane there for a few weeks now. A drive around the northern side of the station shows they are getting ready to install the bridge beams - probably why a 200+ tonne crane is lift 5 tonne bits of steel for the canopy. Haven't tried to see from the southern side (yet).

  • The sub-layer for the track bed is in place up to the Dohles Rocks Rd bridge.
  • The bridge over Dohles Rocks Rd has the gangway installed and some mounting bases for the overhead support poles
  • The short bridge between Kallangur Station & Goodfellows Rd has its beams in place
  • The footings and the beggining of the retaining wall are in place for the Goodfellows Rd bridge - looks like they want it done before Christmas
  • The Bray's Rd bridge has its gangways in place

I don't normally venture any further East than this so can't update on the other works.

Gazza

RTT read what I was replying to before quoting me.

It was suggested by pandamaster we have UTC +10.5. year round in the eastern states..

The problem is in winter having clocks permanently half an hour foward would make sunrise too late.

James

I think the fundamental issue here is the huge east-west spread of the state. When it is broad daylight in Brisbane, it is often still dark in the western and northern parts of the state. While a permanent +10.5 (or even +11) offset in Brisbane wouldn't be too bad, further south and in places like Mt Isa, it would be incredibly annoying (with sunrises later than those experienced in southern parts of Canada).

The usual 'daylight saving myths' are irrelevant in the argument.
- 'My curtains will fade!' - James' curtains fade more without DST as they block the sun coming in at 5am in the morning!
- 'The kids won't get to sleep!' - It will still be dark by 7:30pm when school is on, and 8pm over summer holidays. Unless you are gestapo parents, there's no reason why the kids can't stay up a little later over the summer holidays.
- Higher skin cancer risk - Risk as it stands is higher, as people are generally too lazy to wake up and get to the beach until 9-10am - right when peak UV hits. DST would probably shift that risk more towards lunch time/'siesta' when everybody is doing the proper thing - staying inside either looking after the kids, sleeping or watching the cricket. ;D

The most frustrating thing I find is the fact you get home from work and its already getting dark by 6pm. Meanwhile, it is light at 5am in the morning. This is especially frustrating when trying to sleep. In the middle of summer, due to light sensitivity, I can't sleep past about 9am.

Personally, I am very much for DST. The period between 4am and 6am is the only time of day when I'm guaranteed to be asleep. Unfortunately in summer that's generally the best part of the day in terms of both daylight and temperatures...
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

Wake up earlier you lazy bugger  ;D ;D

riccardo

Do they have daylight saving in Kippa-Ring? The answer might be more relevant to this thread than the rest of above.

I'm wondering if Tony 'Car is King' Abbott will do the descent thing and decline an invitation to the opening, or whether he will turn up and blame Labor for not building it, after spending his opposition period trying to stop them.

Can confirm Murrumba Downs station is partly built. Platform frame (like the Richlands type - not earth filled retaining walls) in place with roof structural frame almost done.

Easily viewable from Masjakin Court, Murrumba Downs.

Aside from Goodfellows Rd overpass it is now possible to drive from Petrie Station all the way to at least the centre of the Bruce Highway.

Perhaps an RBOT tour would be an idea early next year given the amount of work undertaken already?

I'd have no idea where to start, but I know some members have contacts in Theiss from the Trackstar projects.

Thanks Bob,

Also noticed today reading through plans submitted to the Moreton Bay Council, the new bridge over the North Pine River shows four tracks, marked (West to East):

DM - Down Main
MR - Main Relief???
UM - Up Main
US - Up Suburban

Now this is a "not for construction" drawing but has been submitted to and approved by Council. In person I think the new bridge is wide enough for 4 tracks and Google Maps appears to reflect the same.

The old bridge was strengthened many years ago but it still a low speed crossing, perhaps its days are numbered?
