SEQ: Core frequency upgrade route 196 welcomed

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport passengers welcomes the news that core frequency will be boosted for the 196 bus for New Farm, West End, Highgate Hill, Dutton Pk and Fairfield.

Robert Dow, Spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"RAIL Back On Track has long argued that the fastest, cheapest way to improve the public transport system in Brisbane is a targeted, selective boost of services to create a Core Frequent Network covering Brisbane with a network of selective trunk, high-capacity, high-frequency, traffic-prioritised workhorse rail, ferry and bus routes (1). This can be done rapidly with little or no new infrastructure required and modest cost when compared to larger infrastructure projects such as those contained within the SEQ 2031 plan. By installing these trunk routes, it would also enable future moves to a feeder-and-trunk model network that would allow all day high frequency services in the suburbs through a feeder bus connection."

"We commend TransLink for taking up the initiative to re-organise the New Farm bus routes and also for being responsive to feedback by putting up details of the proposed changes and an online feedback form (2). RAIL Back On Track suggests TransLink to also consider the other end of these bus routes - the West End, Fairfield and Yeronga areas for a similar review and 'steam ironing'. Services must be fast, frequent and direct (3,4,5). Having either the 199 or 196 use Ivory St full-time should also be considered.

"RAIL Back On Track would also suggest a BUZ 450 area service, a BUZ 100 (with consideration of the pros and cons of routing via Moorooka) and more frequent evening ferries as next steps in building a Core Frequent Network."

"As RAIL Back On Track has always said, services must be frequent. Bottom line."
