MELBOURNE commuters could become musicians under a bizarre plan to install a gigantic piano at Southern Cross Station.

A keyboard would be fitted to a prominent staircase at the station in a quirky bid to get pedestrians to do their own leg work, instead of taking lifts and escalators.

The project, which has been successful overseas, would cost $120,000 to install  and about $3,000 to manage annually.

Once fitted, each step would become a piano key that emits a note with each step.

The piano project resulted in a 66 percent increase in stair usage when tested in Stockholm last year.

The council's Future Melbourne Committee is due to make a decision on whether to push ahead with the project at its meeting  tomorrow night.

Good to encourage 'active transport' ...   :P
