Hi. I am currently working on a suggested public transport network for South East Queensland. It involves a clearly defined route hierarchy which are:
City Express: Express services running along major arterial roads which service limited stops and are all high frequency services;
Suburban Link: Express crosstown services bypassing the CBD with limited stops and are all high frequency services;
Coast Express: Express services running along major arterial roads on the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast
and are all high frequency services;
City all stops: Stops at all stops along the route and services the CBD
Local Link: Direct all stops service between to close interchange points.
Local Feeder: All stops service connecting local neighbourhoods with key interchange points.

I have started with the Moreton Bay Region

NOTE: The 649 would be removed as an upgrade to the Sunshine Coast line is involved

Some feedback that is similar to what I said at the time the Moreton bay network was implemented:

676
-The loop along castle hill drive and "backtrack "to Murrumba Downs Shopping center should be eliminated in favour of a direct routing along Dohles Rocks Rd to the Shopping Center, then down to the Pine River Drive Terminus. The loop around Castle Hill Drive would be covered by a modified 679.

679
-Make into a full loop Via Henry Rd to better service rapidly growing new housing estates in the south east part of Griffin (Eg White Ibis Drive estate). Having bus services in place now will encourage new households to adopt public transport.
-This route would service the Castle Hill Drive loop.

683
-Should go to North Lakes instead of looping back on itself, similar in concept to the 684 and 685.
The southern end should feed Petrie instead of Kallangur station.

STB

I won't really comment as I didn't work on that area during my time at TL (except for the Bribie Island network).

The only things I'd mention is that I do remember the Northern Region Planner 12 years ago (who sat next to me in the office) said he purposely did not number current route 660 to route 666, due to the religious and mythical connotations to it (so I'd probably recommend avoiding that number - there are some out in the community who get rather superstitious about that particular number, 666).

I'd also mention that unless you are suggesting a major route change, I wouldn't go changing any of the route numbers, like you've done with 'Route 641', I'd keep it as Route 640.

As a side note, the planning principal around route numbers is that generally if a route ends in a '0' it's a primary core line haul route between two key locations (eg: Garden City and Brisbane City ala Route 120, 170, 180 etc), while those ending in '1' etc, are considered secondary routes to supplement and support the primary route.

aldonius

On numbering, it would be nice if all the frequent services ended with a 0 (or a 5).

I'm not sure what you're trying to achieve with the Dayboro-Samford section of the 676. The number of people commuting Samford -> Dayboro would be necessarily tiny.

I find the Caboolture Woorim Caboolture services (640) end too early on weekends (1700) and weekdays (1900). The last service departing Woorim back to Caboolture should be at 2100 not 1700 as it is now. This will entice visitors to the island on weekends where they can also enjoy a bite to eat or drink in the early evening prior to heading back to the mainland.

Thank you all for your feedback. I have renumbered 666 to 661, altered the 676 and 679 would be a bidirectional loop shared with 678 as well as renumbered 641 back to 640. I have also altered route 683 so it goes from Petrie station to North Lakes station rather than looping around and removed the Samford extension of the 676 and it'll terminate at Dayboro. That was what I was meant to do but for some reason I accidently continued drawing the line. Also a majority of routes would have their operating times extended. Later tonight I'll post my Brisbane North suggested network.

Cazza

Just another thing too, some of the routes are very slow and nomadic (I know that most of them are the same as the current network, but this is why network changes happen: to benefit the network and better meet the travel needs of commuters).

A few examples in the Strathpine area alone:
-No need for the 669 and 670 to divert via Strathpine West SS during the day and on weekends. Only once before and after school is needed.

-672: While I agree that there should be a route linking Albany Creek and Strathpine, it should be run by BT and run direct via South Pine Rd and Strathpine Station rather than through the backstreets of Warner. The route I have proposed runs from Brookside to Strathpine Centre via Camelia Ave, Queens Rd, Old Northern Rd, Keong Rd, Albany Creek Shops, South Pine Rd and Strathpine Station. The 672 you have proposed should run from Albany Creek Shops omitting the Eatons Hills loop. I am also questioning whether buses can run through some of those newer suburban streets (especially through Warner). But I guess that could be up to the local councils and bus companies as to whether that could/should happen.

-The 673 can run straight from Kensington Way, right onto Sovereign Ave, left Leone St, right Kumbari St, left Tarandi St then continue normal route. It also doesn't really need to go via Lawnton Station so you can run straight down Francis Rd. The western terminus doesn't really need to change from what the 673 currently does. I wouldn't mind it turn left onto Fairlane St, right onto Mercedes St, right onto Mcillwraith St then terminate at the roundabout but it doesn't need to serve the housing estate east of here. They can walk 500m.

-The 674 between Gympie Rd and Grahams Rd should run direct via Bells Pocket Rd (rather than zig-zagging through the back streets). There is no real need. It is only a 5 min walk from Peter St to Bells Pocket Rd. You can also run straight down Colleen St rather than having to go down to Spencer St, only to loop back again.

-The 675 into Cashmere is supported. It doesn't need to go into the IGA precinct at Cashmere, stops on the road outside will do. Not sure about the need to loop around Hayward Ave/Franzin Dr. Also, why did you run it down Sparkes Rd from Kensington Way to Francis Rd, only to turn back on itself? Just have it turn right from Sparkes Rd into Kensington Way.

By straightening out these routes, they will be quicker and more efficient, attracting more commuters. It will benefit the overall network rather than a few people by having a bus stop closer to their house.

These are just my ideas though, do what you want with them :-t

LBR2204

Fixed. I have kept the 672 as is as it'll connect with high frequency services at Albany Creek.

Here is my Brisbane North suggested network

Sorry. But I'm not digging many if not most of the northside routes and their modifications. Many of the routes are pointless and don't offer redundancies in the network. Many of your routes can be cut up into a host of other routes to form local loop routes. You also have left out future planning for linking in Carseldine station/TMR/future development. The current 335 is the fastest link to Chermside in this instance. It simply looks like the existing network with a few patches and fill in routes here and there. The entire network needs a rewrite and should hardly be based of anything.

If you can try to look up the 2013 proposed translink review for Brisbanes northside. It was by far leap and bounds better than the current and any other proposed network put forward to date. It addressed duplication, areas that had lack of coverage and provided links to bus and rail interchanges/hf routes. The added bonus was that the network also provided a backup should a major corridor be taken off line be it road or rail.

ie if you lived/used Geebung railway station as your main destination and the rail network was out of action due to a truck hitting overhead powerlines at Sunshine railway station. You could catch a train to Boondall railway station and catch a feeder bus to Geebung station. You could also catch a hf bus to Chermside to then connect with a feeder bus to Geebung. If Chermside was your destination and something major blocked buses going northbound you could catch a HF route to aspley and feeder to chermside or the train to Geebung and feeder to Chermside. If Carseldine railway station was your main destination you could catch the train to Boondall and hop onto a feeder loop route to Carseldine or you could get a hf route to Aspley and hop onto the local feeder route to Carseldine. It should be noted that this feeder loop route I keep mentioning is the 1 bus route. The North Loop route via Aspley, Chermside, Geebung, Boondall, Taigum and Carseldine. Since the entire northside was redone with many routes no longer looking anything like the current ones it allowed for a proper designed network. The loop clock and anticlockwise  route was Aspley interchange to Carseldine railway station via the 340, 335 to Taigum, 335/old 339 to Boondall, 325/old 327 + new route running to Geebung, 325/336/337 to Chermside, 336/337/353/340 to Aspley. Such a loop route enabled massive redundancy and quick alternatives should the network go tits up which is what we didn't see with translink issuing alternative routes for passengers such as Geebung residents catching the 326/327 from Toombul - 5 minutes before the last couple services which ran pretty much empty after a truck took down the overheads at Sunshine railway station about 4 hours earlier. Replacement buses were busy doing school runs and thus only a handful of buses were actually available.

Basically the 2013 network was designed on 2 networks. The first and main network was made up of the HF/core routes and the railway lines. Its second network was the feeder routes. These secondary routes are those that fed into railway stations, bus interchanges and high frequency bus routes. Its just such a shame that some stupid residents in the western suburbs wrecked it for the entire of Brisbane.

Gazza

Yeah to be honest I think this northside network could be tidied up a bit.

I can see that you are working off the basis that there are a lot of local services that connect with rail and other frequent corridors, the issue is a lot of these feeders are still only 30 minutley, so there's not enough expansion of frequency compared to the status quo.

And a lot of them are very short and miss key destinations. For example current 340 users go from having a BUZ to having a the  341 at half the frequency, and it doesnt even make it to Chermside.

The 2013 review was able to provide new frequent service to Albany Creek, on the 325 corridor, and also on the 300 so there was better expanded access.

Paul B

If someone can upload the original 2013 northside bus plan here and perhaps
add some tweaks that would be helpful (as well as highlighting the winners/losers for each route change).
One thing I'd try to do is anything hourly MUST be feederised
to 30 mins or better. Even if the route has to go in the reverse direction only

LBR2204

Hi all. Thank you for your feedback. I am editing it now. Also regarding the 2013 review I am well aware of what happened. I have also found some of the maps on wayback machine using a link I found while googling.
Here's how to do it
1. Go to https://archive.org/web/
2. Type in http://translink.com.au/resources/travel-information/service-updates/seq-bus-network-review/Route-___.png
e.g. if you want route 330 type in http://translink.com.au/resources/travel-information/service-updates/seq-bus-network-review/Route-330.png
3. Click browse history
4. Click on a highlighted date
5. Then the map comes up

Quick question: Why are you sending routes from the INB over the William Jolly Bridge, only to come back across and terminate at QSBS? It seems pretty inefficient to head all the way down Roma St (not on the busway) only to turn back and come in back across the Victoria Bridge.

The current system works pretty well.

If you want these routes to terminate at QSBS, have them run the normal route through Roma St Station then skip KGS Station and terminate at QSBS (similar to what the current Route P455 and co. do).

Also, I think you should have a route that runs straight down Webster Rd and Wardell St. Extending the 371 to Chermside (or somewhere near here) will fix this the Webster Rd.

As for Wardell St, I think Route 35 should run down Wardell St and Waterworks Rd (like the 350 does currently). Enoggera Rd has enough services down it.

Please tell me this is some kind of joke? The route which you are replacing (300) already runs half-hourly on weekends and every 20 minutes most of the day on weekdays, and every 15 minutes during peak hours (and is also suplemented with the 305 short working during peak) and you somehow think a half-hourly service replacement will pick up the slack?

300 is actually a good candidate for BUZification. Reducing service to it doesn't make any kind of sense.

HappyTrainGuy

I think the translink review had it becoming a HF route.

LBR2204

Hi all. I have improved it. It may not be perfect but it is an improvement. Also regarding the 300 I believe I made a typo regarding the frequency. The new route 300 I put as more frequent which I believe it was a mistake. Anyway the frequencies were supposed to provide flexibility. I do not know every bus route in Brisbane that needs much more services than it does. Anyway with the new one all routes will run every 15 minutes or better during peak. I also made the change over the William Jolly as I believe it will make some improvements with capacity issues at the Cultural Centre and bus signal priority would happen along the HF routes and upgrades.

City Designer

Newmarket does not have the  turnaround capacity to terminate buses. Buses are limited to through routing or blank running. There is also no layover capacity.

Buses coming from the north can let off the last passenger southbound outside the cinema, however, there is nowhere to turn the bus around and commence a new journey at a northbound stop.

Running buses from Sandgate Road via the Inner Northern Busway is convoluted and slower than Anne Street/Wickham Street.

Running Albany Creek buses via Wardell Street is slower than Enoggera Road (the deleted 355 used to do this on weekends, it was a variation of the 350).

LBR2204

Regarding Newmarket the idea is to turn buses around in a loop. They'd terminate outside the cinemas and they would loop around via Edmondstone Street, Baradine Street and Newmarket Road similar to services terminating at Ashgrove would stop outside Ashgrove Marketplace on Stewart Road and loop around via Harry Street and Ashgrove Avenue. There is no layover facilities currently as at the moment there is no need for them if services don't terminate there currently but it may be possible. Also not all termini need a layover. For example the 672 from Strathpine to Warner doesn't have a layover at the Warner Lakes terminus as it only waits for 6 mins before beginning the run. Buses could terminate there for a short period before commencing their next run and layover at the other end of the route and there are plenty of stops in the area to share routes to avoid bus congestion in the area. All that needs to be added is another stop across from the Edmondstone Street at Newmarket stop (where the northbound 325 stops currently) and stagger it a bit so the clockwise routes 354 and 356 can stop there and omit the CityXpress stops outside the cinema. The loop routes do not need layover areas as Stafford City would be the terminus and that is where they would need to layover. Also I may combine the 363 and 364 into a loop service and layover in the CBD. The idea is that as there will be less routes on CBD streets that some CBD stops will be removed and turned into layover areas. Also according to google maps Wardell Street is only 3 minutes slower than Enoggera Road and the idea of making the 31 travel via the Inner Northern Busway is to improve frequency on the busway as that is an area that people go to for frequent services which is more of an improvement than a loss as I don't think it'll inconvenience people too much having a service that is only a couple of minutes slower which they'll have much more services anyway than they do currently. Also it'll provide for a more consistant and on time service.

City Designer

The loop arrangement doesn't work. Good on paper, rubbish in practice.

There isn't kerbside capacity for buses to wait at the stops between services. Not having layover time reduces reliability. An outer suburban terminus of an infrequent route is not comparable to a busy inner suburban precinct.

The Ashgrove terminus is used by 4 infrequent local routes and has layover capacity built into the bay. Same with the 61 terminus on Stewart Road.

Newmarket doesn't have the kerbside space for larger bus stops or layover areas.

LBR2204

Another solution I have come up with is make the 363 travel via Windsor Rd and Waterworks Rd to Ashgrove Marketplace and extend the 364 to Ashgrove Marketplace via Ashgrove Ave and remove the 373 entirely. It'll also provide a better connection between Herston, QUT to Ashgrove which is good for students in that area. Also a potential stop to be part of the interchange could be the one on Ashgrove Ave to allow a couple of minutes gap. It'll not be the best interchange (about 220 m) but it is roughly the same at Enoggera between the station itself and the CityXpress stop on Wardell St.

have you ever been on baradine st?  A bus is barely able to navigate the bend, and going the other way would be much worse.

LBR2204

No but I don't see how it is any different to Queen St Bus Station or Greenwoods in Cashmere which has a very tight turn and somehow the 6805, 6811, 6852 and 6872 school routes manage to get through and if you are talking about the Edmondstone St end it is next to a park so there is potential for widening. Also if I extended the 363 and 364 to Ashgrove and removed the 373 as mentioned above it would be possible to run buses along Baradine St in one direction only. It is narrow but there are plenty of areas that are worse including in many suburban streets as many people do not consider others when parking and leave a narrow gap for buses to pass through.

SurfRail

Some arrangements are a function of necessity over time, they don't set out to perpetuate the same issues in new locations.
Ride the G:

City Designer

Whether a bus can make it around the loop is irrelevant. You're still missing the layover capacity. It's the same reason why only the 444 services GoMA.

I would not terminate ANY service at Newmarket.

LBR2204

Ok. I see that there are many ways that I could make services not terminate at Newmarket while still keeping it as a key interchange by making the 361 a through route to Stafford via Kedron Brook Rd and remove the 371 and by making routes 363 and 364 terminate at Ashgrove Marketplace.

LBR2204

Fixed it. All routes would be through services through Newmarket now however I have still kept it as an interchange point.

LBR2204

I have now completed my East Brisbane and Redlands Planned Networks. I have also tweaked it a little following feedback regarding Newmarket as I originally had services terminating at Coorparoo station which has a similar issue.

Gazza

Couple of questions?
-The 201 turns back and goes towards Greenslopes, but I would have thought PA hospital station or UQ lakes would be more advantageous?

-A limited number of routes go the CBD in this proposal, what made the 214 get selected for this?

-The Maroon Glider type routing of the X22 has no advantages.

-What would be the configuration of the 233 prior to a bridge existing, and is a road bridge even feasible there?

Cazza

Why does the 230 run down Grey St and not the busway? This is what they did with the Maroon Glider when it first started and look how that turned out...

Aside from this, Grey St is prone to chronic peak hour, weekend and night-time traffic. I tried getting out of there at around 10:30pm a few Fridays ago and it took me almost 15 mins to get from Russell St to Peel St. A distance of only 500m!

This would make the reliability of the 230 so low that it would be contending with Sydney's Route 370 (see here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2262028391/?fref=nf   and here: https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/newslocal/central-sydney/passengers-revolt-against-sydneys-laterunning-370-bus/news-story/7a1e106570dc4faa150cb80ad69dcbf5   and here: https://www.news.com.au/national/nsw-act/news/inner-wests-370-bus-service-labelled-the-citys-worst-route/news-story/1401a89ffdd031f892bec615a980721f ). In the last article, the picture of the "crowded bus" is from Brisbane so great journalism there.

If you were to have a bus down Grey St (which I would strongly advise not to due to the traffic and the fact that there is a perfectly good and reliable busway less than 100m away), I would run it between Cultural Centre (outside museum) and Woolloongabba Station only.

STB

Okay, Redlands and Brisbane East, I can comment on as I not only lived in that area for nearly 30 years (1989-2015), but I was also the Planner or the Redlands region and worked on the busway route model for the Brisbane East region back before the Eastern Busway existed.

I'll start with the Redlands, and will deal with Brisbane East in a few days time (I'm off to Melbourne in a few hours and need to spend my time getting ready for that trip).

Firstly:

240 - I would NOT delete this route and replace it with route 253, we tried messing with this route way back in 2005 and it caused an uproar with those from Manly Road wanting a connection to Capalaba, and those in Arenga and Caladium Sts need access to Capalaba and Carindale as well, I wouldn't delete route 242 either, it gets decent patronage from Carindale, as does current route 240.  So basically leave it as it is.

Also, ENOUGH WITH THE LOOPS!  I noticed you were told about this in an earlier post with the Brisbane North region, and I strongly repeat this with what you've done here in the Redlands region, ie: joining up Route 265/266, leave route 266 as is, it's a historical route that when we tried looking at it, there was a massive backlash from those living in Alexandra Hills wanting the route to remain as is, and so we did leave it as it was and it continues to receive decent patronage today.  Route 267 users would probably want to grab you by the neck if you suggested deleting route 267 as well (they went absolutely ham at TL when simply altering the departure times many years ago).  Route 267 is also one of the peak hour routes in the Redlands that gets a solid full load every bus.

With regards to routes 254/255, I'd leave those routes as they stand currently, two separate routes.  The old route 8 did a similar thing and there was a giant sigh of relief for those living in Wellington Point accessing Cleveland by not having to go via The Point (I think you know what that means).  There isn't really any demand to join those routes together ie: people from Birkdale wanting to go to Cleveland and if there was, it's much easier just to time those two routes together to interchange at Birkdale station (while still taking into account that the train is still the primary connection for routes 254/255 as they are today).

I also would continue route 270 to Carindale as it does currently.  There is demand for Victoria Point residents to access Carindale as has again been a historical development with old route 3 in the pre TL days, that developed patronage between Victoria Point and Carindale and continues to this day.  This was something that myself and my supervisor worked on back in 2007 after the consultant who redeveloped the network in 2005 after receiving complaints from Victoria Point residents.

Overall too, I wouldn't delete any of the peak hour routes, they have high demand and get solid (even standing) loads into and out of the city.  I'd also keep route 273 via Redland Bay Road to ensure there's a peak service along that corridor.

Again with route 276/277, forget creating a loop, we tried it, and the residents hated it, so in 2007, I personally redeveloped both the Victoria Point and Redland Bay networks in response to this which has since gone under further review by other Planners since my time, and they ended up keeping the concept overall of the network I created, so obviously the network I worked on and was implemented was well received and made sense (among some minor nuances from a few in Point Halloran).

Hate to break it to you, but it seems that you haven't taken any consideration in local trip patterns and patronage.  Pro tip, when planning, this is what you look at before drawing any lines on a map.

Just in response to Newmarket too....we don't design routes based on what looks good on paper, if the infrastructure can't support it, we don't plan for it.  Planners work with what we've got, not with what we'd like to think can happen with infrastructure development to support those plans.

SurfRail

These routes strike me as being far too unnecessarily complicated (ie akin to the present).
Ride the G:

James

Just a few bits of feedback on the Brisbane East proposal that stand out here:

1. There appears to be a lot of duplication and single-seat services - the Routes 203/204 and 205/206 loops really stand out as ones which run almost entirely within 800m of other routes, and doesn't really 'go' anywhere that couldn't be solved with a transfer between a City-bound route and a Cavendish Road/Boundary Road bus route. Yes, you will need to provide orbitals which cross multiple regions of Brisbane, but you can't split a city into four parts.

2. Express routes - particularly the X22. How express is express? A lot of the 'yellow' stops on OCR could be removed, with the 200 BUZ stopping at all the remaining stops. Unless you're talking significant time savings, an express is hardly worth it. You're better off redistributing resources to a UQ Lakes bus or Chatsworth/Stanley Road BUZ.

3. Route 212 - you have just created an outbreak of bus rage in Carindale, where they have lost their BUZ+rockets and had it replaced by a feeder with indefinite frequency. Prepare for Moggill 444-style anger.

4. You have put a bridge across the river at Teneriffe, only to run the bus through New Farm. Not only does this bridge not exist, but even if it does exist, a diversion through New Farm would slow any benefit the service gets from running over the bridge. Brunswick St is not the fastest road to travel on at the best of times.

Wynnum/Manly area seems to be reasonably well done (not that BCC can do it much worse at the moment IMO), but this business of feederising services east of Carindale isn't very smart IMO.

When you turn a bus route into a feeder, ideally you want to be terminating it (or forcing transfer) at a point where some pax will get off anyway, and far enough away from the city that you're not forcing transfer too early. For the northside, this would be Toombul, Chermside and perhaps Lutwyche. For the westside, that would be Mt Ommaney, Indooroopilly and perhaps Toowong.

For Stanley & Chatsworth Rd, the resources are there right now to remove the 204 & 222 from OCR and replace them with a BUZ along each corridor. OCR can then have resources focused on upping it to 6bph - I'm not sure how needed it will be though. The new 205 and 210 BUZ would take a lot of patronage away from the 200, and there would be nothing wrong with running all three of these to the CBD anyway.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

City Designer

RE: Brisbane East

The only positive thing I have to say about the Brisbane East network is that Liam did not try to terminate a bus at Morningside.

Running a bus down Mossvale Drive and Brook Street WAKERLEY is not possible. They are non-bus collector roads.

Same with Pinnibar Street HEMMANT, Winton Crescent CANNON HILL, and Currigee Circuit TINGALPA. All are non-bus access streets.

City Designer

RE: Redland City

The 273 is a pointless duplication of the 270 along Redland Bay Road. It's also convoluted through CLEVELAND.

The 275/276 loop will have chronic late running issues due to the north loop through Ziegenfusz Road THORNLANDS. It's convoluted through Point O'Halloran.

Colthouse Drive THORNLANDS is a bus collector and better route alignment than Thornlands Road as there is a signalised intersection with Cleveland Redland Bay Road.

The 252, 253, and 254/255 are needlessly long, complicated, and will have late running issues.

tazzer9

The main issue is that your aren't fixing the problems with brisbane bus system.  For me, there are three problems with buses in brisbane.   Some areas are drastically under serviced or not serviced.   Some routes aren't frequent enough.   And some routes head into the city when they shouldn't.  I would say only a minority of buses in brisbane having routing problems.  And those that do, only need a quick, small fix or the route should be deleted entirely as there is a close alternative.
Just terminate some of the routes to the outer suburbs to a interchange like indooropilly and double that routes frequency.

I will use the current the Gap, ashgrove and bardon services as an example.

Cull the 382 and 383, they serve little purpose and they are underutilized.  Make the 379 a peak only service, running every 15 minutes in peak.   Make the 380 and 381 every 30 minutes off peak, and bump them to every 15 minutes in peak.  Along with this, cull half the bus stops between petrie terrace and west ashgrove along waterworks/musgrave road.  There are way too many.  keep 384 as is, its fairly popular and somewhat usefull.   385 is kept as is, maybe a slight extension of when the 10 minute afternoon frequency and semi express is involved.  362 should be upgraded slightly and made to interchange with the train at keperra station, hourly frequency plus morning and afternoon school extras would be good.
375 is kept as is.
61 should have some frequency increases across the whole day and should be extended to enogerra station, ideally every 12 minutes off peak, every 8 minutes peak.
