National Intergrated Ticketing

With the plethora of Smart Card ticketing systems in place around Australia (Miki, Go Card, Opal, SmartRider etc), is there any move to have these systems inyeroperable?  If it can be done with eTags, why is not possible to do the same with SmartCards and even have trips direct debited to a Credit Card?

Basically, I travel quite a bit and it would make sense if I could use my GoCard in Melbourne or Perth or my Miki card in Sydney.  Problem is that each system is supplied by a different supplier but effecting a gateway for interoperability should not be rocket science.  Even interfacing directly with Smart Credidcards should be possible.  They even use mobile phones in other places!

Every state wants to do things in their own way which complicates things.

In an ideal world, I'd certainly agree with you, but in NSW at least the priority is to get the thing working!
