Media Release 22 November 2006
Make room for more, please move away from the door!

RAIL - Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community organisation for the promotion of rail throughout Australia has said that recent announcements concerning the acquisition of new trains for CityTrain in Brisbane are timely, and are urgently needed to increase passenger accommodation on the network.  However, to help ease overcrowding today, an advertising campaign encouraging passengers to move down aisles towards the centre of carriages, freeing up room at the doors will help ease commuters' frustrations.  This will also assist in keeping trains on time.

Robert Dow, on behalf of RAIL Back On Track said "On my journey by train to Roma Street this morning, it was very congested around doorways.  If folks were encouraged to move down the carriages in the aisles this would help ease congestion.  If passengers are not held up boarding and leaving the trains, timetables are better able to be maintained as well."

"I am sure a catchy slogan could be found. For example 'Put a smile on a commuter's dial, move along the centre aisle'  or 'Make room for more, please move away from the door' or something similar."

"Thanks to CityTrain staff and crew for the great job they do under trying conditions at times. Well done!"

Sent to all outlets:

9th November 2010

Greetings,

Some media interest in encouraging passengers to move down aisles this morning.  It isn't rocket science is it?

We have been raising solutions to this issue for years.  See media release 22 November 2006 below:

Also this of interest --> http://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=4325.0

Best wishes
Robert

People naturally congregate around doors.  There are two solutions:-

  • More doors which is the "metro" philosophy enabling rapid entry and exit from the train
  • One way flow which is the solution used on buses in Brazil.  Enter by the front door then move through a one-way turnstile where you pay your fare and then exit from the back door.

Both solutions work best when there are fewer seats and more standing room which in a metro are longitudinal, and in Brazil, are single seats either side.

There is no plan to increase doors as far as I aware, this was stated at the rolling stock focus group a year or so ago.

Commuter education and encouragement to think of others is needed.  Too easy to blame the operator all the time.

And the best seats in an EMU are in the centre of the carriage ...  ;)

We have raised the lack of hand supports particularly in the centre regions of carriages, just ignored as usual.

#Metro

lets start moving to metro style seating in the very last carriage. it would allow 2 3-car trains to be coupled end-to-end with the metro style seat section in the middle.
Negative people... have a problem for every solution. Posts are commentary and are not necessarily endorsed by RAIL Back on Track or its members.
