Seniors' public transport fares ...

Greetings,

Ms. Val French ( President of Older People Speak Out ) was reported at Brisbanetimes commenting:

Quote... "We had a much better system of public transport about ten years ago than we do now," Ms French said.

"We were able to use our [Commonwealth Seniors] card and it didn't cost much at all – but that's all changed and it's one of the things seniors are feeling really hard-done-by about.

"If you go to Sydney, I can use my ordinary discount card and for $2.50 I can go to Manly, and I can go there on the ferry, and then travel from the ferry up to the railway station and right up to Newcastle if I want – it's all the same price for the day.

"As a result, older people in Sydney have a really good quality of life for the simple reason they know it's not going to cost them the earth to go out with their friends even if they aren't fit to drive.

"That's the way a city should be – Brisbane doesn't take care of their old people." ...

Here is a scan of what Seniors have as entitlements on public transport around the country.  It is little wonder that Seniors in Queensland feel that the system is worse now than 10 years ago.

Another compelling reason why a review of the fares in south east Queensland is needed urgently.

New South Wales is split into two zones, the metro zone that runs from Newcastle to South of Wollongong and out to Goulburn and includes all of metro Sydney, Central Coast etc.
The pensioner excursion ticket is $2.50

Country NSW also has this ticket for use in the second zone which is everywhere else in NSW. So from my location on the Mid North Coast I can go to Tweed Heads by train and bus for $2.50 or just into Taree and back for $2.50 in the same day.

However if you cross that boundary between the zones you pay half price. So from here to Sydney via Taree I pay half fare, about $25 I think. Nothing to stop me just paying to go to Broadmeadow for say $18, hopping off there and paying $2.50 for the rest of the trip in on a metro train. Hardly worth the hassle for the few dollars.

I'd guess the idea is that most country people will just use the excursion ticket for fairly local travel, not to travel from one end of the State to the other, for example hopping buses around Taree or Forster, or popping over from Taree to Gloucester or Wauchope on the train for a change of RSL pokies for the day  :-t

Is it not the case that the Seniors card travel concessions in SEQ apply from aged 65, not 60 as in other states and territories?

What happens if people aged 60 come from other states to Queensland, armed with their southern Seniors card, and request a Qld one after siting out the requisite residential qualifying period.

BribieG

In QLD you can get a seniors card at 60 and get travel concessions if you are not working full time and also have a pension or health care card. would probably cover most unless you have a good income already that precludes health care card.

Stillwater

The irony is that Queensland recognises the Seniors Card issued by other states to those who are 60-years-old.  Seniors from other states, armed with their state's Seniors Card, on holidays in Queensland get seniors travel concessions on SEQ buses, trains and ferries while Queenslanders of the same age, or in the age bracket 60-65, do not enjoy the same concessions.

Maybe a media statement might highlight the issue .....  RailBOT calls on Newman Government to end the discrimination against a cohort of older Queenslanders who must pay full fare to travel on public transport in SEQ while the government gives concessions to visitors from interstate using the same services.  So-called 'grey Mexicans' from south of the border aged 60 to 65 get the travel benefits that the state government restricts to Queenslanders aged 65 or more.  It is just one example of a host of anomalies surrounding Seniors travel that RailBOT wants reviewed.  etc       :pr

Seniors 60 year plus can get a Seniors card in Queensland under certain conditions, not blanket.  State requirements vary but anyone with a Senior card gets the concessions in each state.
