The Age --> Ditch the timetable: Metro Tunnel trains on track to run every three minutes $

QuoteTrains through Melbourne's new Metro Tunnel project will be able to run as frequently as once every three minutes.

In testing this month, 12 trains made 18 trips an hour between West Footscray and Hawksburn – the first use of high-frequency services on the $12 billion railway under the CBD.

The state government initially promised a "turn up and go" service – without specifying precisely how often trains would run.

The significant testing milestone was made possible by modern signalling technology that allows trains to communicate wirelessly with each other and the network and to adjust their speed and run closer together.

The high-capacity signalling is now used on almost half of the services on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines. ...

For those not familiar with this location.  Double tracks on the left are the Sandringham lines.

The tracks on the right are the quad track from South Yarra through to Caulfield. If you look carefully you can see just see the entrance to the Metro Tunnel.

The Age --> 'The state will need to pay more': Metro Tunnel costs blow out once again $

QuoteElectromagnetic interference blamed for the relocation of the Arden hospital precinct could continue to haunt the $14 billion Metro Tunnel as authorities continue to test mitigation measures around other stations and costs continue to blow out.

A new report released on Thursday said the government would have to pay more to complete the project as construction pushes past its contract date.

The third report into the Metro Tunnel by the Victorian Auditor-General's Office was tabled in parliament on Thursday. It focuses on the integration of signalling systems, testing and commissioning that form the final stages of the project. ...

The Age --> Delays, ditched designs and hospital damage: Leaked report reveals Metro Tunnel woes $

QuoteA leaked government report on the new $14 billion Metro Tunnel rail line under central Melbourne reveals delays, potential compensation claims, unresolved issues with cancer treatment equipment in an inner suburb, and plans to dump elements of the mega-project to cut costs.

The report – written last month for the state government's infrastructure development committee, which includes several senior MPs – says that while the Cross Yarra Partnership is contracted to finish the project on April 29 next year, "late 2025 is more likely".

It warns that delivery of two new rail stations, State Library and Town Hall, are "behind schedule" and that the relationship with the companies delivering the project could become a problem. ...

AnonymouslyBad

^ Where does the 55 second dwell time come from though? Even with a high volume of passengers, a modern, fully-accessible station should be planning for closer to half that.
For a "hybrid" line like this (or like CRR) the metro stations themselves are a terrible place to pad the timetable.

The Age --> Metro Tunnel blowout to cost taxpayers extra $840 million $

QuoteThe cost of the Metro Tunnel rail project has blown out for taxpayers by another $837 million, pushing the total bill beyond $15 billion.

Transport Infrastructure Minister Danny Pearson said on Thursday that the state had reached a deal with the project's builders to cover ballooning construction costs.

Victorian taxpayers will fork out $837 million, while the Cross Yarra Partnerships (CYP) consortium will cover a similar amount.

The increase brings the total cost of the project to the state to $13.48 billion, compared with $10.9 billion when first announced in 2016. But the total cost of the project is even higher, as much as $15.6 billion, with the remainder borne by the builder, CYP. ...
