Melbourne Age --> Metro Tunnel stations to mirror Paris, London with screen doors $

QuoteNew stations in Melbourne's Metro Tunnel project will match those in London, Hong Kong, Paris and Sydney with electronic screen doors along the length of platforms.

But the new doors cannot be retrofitted to older underground stations on the City Loop.

About 300 doors will be fitted in the five new stations, with the sliding glass expected to prevent people or objects falling onto the tracks, graffiti or trespassers, and other hazards that can delay trains, which are planned to arrive every few minutes once services begin in 2025.

Acting Premier Jacinta Allan, who is also transport minister, held a press conference at the under-construction Parkville station in Melbourne's inner north on Sunday morning to show off the glass doors. ...

QuoteBut the new doors cannot be retrofitted to older underground stations on the City Loop.

Invites the question - why not? I think other cities have managed to retrofit such doors to legacy stations, so it would be good to know why it can't in this case.

^ my understanding is ATO (automatic train operation) is needed to align to the PSDs.  The older model trains running presently through City Loop etc. are not suitable for ATO.  Same as why only NGRs will be operating through CRR stations with PSDs.   There is also the issue of variation in door positions and spacing. The trains that will be operating in the Melb Metro Tunnel are the HCMT (new trains).  These will be operating through from the Pakenham line and will be the only trains in the Melb Metro Tunnel.

It is as basic as that.  As new trains continue to rolled out I suppose one day the City Loop etc could be upgraded but it would be while off if at all.

I think other cities have less variation in rolling stock.

Eg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_commuter_rail#Rolling_stock

QuoteSince the opening of the Stockholm City Line (Citybanan) on 10 July 2017, only one train type, the X60 Coradia Nordic trains from Alstom is currently used on the network, due to the use of platform screen doors on the Citybanan.

Once the platform screen doors are in that pretty much locks in the door spacing and count for future rollingstock. Seem's we'll be stuck with the spacing used on the NGR's from now on (although I don't particularly see the need to change it).

Herald Sun --> When you may be able to travel in the Metro Tunnel $

QuoteTest trains are scheduled to run through the Metro Tunnel from as early as next month, boosting hopes the $14 billion rail line could take passengers by late-2024.

The major milestone would lead to High Capacity Metro Trains and signalling systems being trialled between South Yarra and Kensington during a rigorous 16-month safety process.

If successful, the tunnel would be on track to open months earlier than expected, with the project builder and government recently promising passengers could travel through the alternative to the City Loop in 2025. ...

Herald Sun --> Metro tunnel secret test to pave the way for trial operations to begin next year $

QuoteThe first train in the $14bn Metro tunnel has hit the tracks in the early hours of this morning as the city-shaping project begins months of live testing.

The secret operation for a High Capacity Metro train to enter the 9km tunnel from the South Yarra entrance was scheduled for 2am.

Once underground, the train was to run slowly up and down the tracks to enable safety checks and to ensure the tunnel has been built as designed, after which signalling systems will be tested for several months.

Video obtained by the Herald Sun shot early Tuesday morning shows a new train slowly rolling into the tunnel as workers look on. ...

I love how safety mad it is that its a test train run only by project staff within a closed project area, but they still put a net across the door to prevent people entering or leaving the train.

The Age --> Testing delays could push Metro Tunnel opening into late 2025 $

QuoteThe Metro Tunnel Project is prepared for up to 12 months of delays during a risky phase of testing and trial operations, which could push the opening of Melbourne's new underground train line to late 2025.

The state government has previously said the $12.6 billion cross-city rail line between Kensington and South Yarra would open some time in 2025 – a year earlier than first scheduled.

But expectations were raised last week that the tunnel and its five new inner-city stations would open to passengers even earlier, after the boss of one of its builders said it was on track to finish work in September 2024. ...
