SEQ: Ferny Grove line - turn up and go trains

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport passengers has welcomed the announcement of increased train frequency - 15 minutes on the Ferny Grove line weekdays between the peaks (1).

Robert Dow, Spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"Public transport must be fast, direct and frequent. The Ferny Grove line is ideally placed to have an increased train frequency (2).  This will drive patronage increases and cuts down on waiting time with bus/rail connections particularly."

"The Ferny Grove line has now been duplicated and will be able to support the increased train frequency.  This is a sound policy and will be welcomed by the community."

"It would have been a great outcome had the extra trains ran through to Yeerongpilly rather than Park Road. This would have then given a 15 minute rail service from Ferny Grove to Yeerongpilly, Northgate to Darra.  A major boost for the network."

"RAIL Back On Track has long called for improvements in train frequency on all lines. In time further incremental improvements will need to be made on the rest of the network (3)."

Have to say I'm concerned that they still refer to it as a trial.

ozbob

Yes, just being consistent. I think we might see an extension of the ' trial ' with sector 2 implementation as well.   :P

http://statements.qld.gov.au/Statement/2013/10/11/175000-more-trips-for-frequent-ferny-grove-trains

Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Scott Emerson
Friday, October 11, 2013

175,000 more trips for frequent Ferny Grove trains

Ferny Grove line passengers are voting for the Newman Government's trial of 15 minute off-peak services with their feet.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson and Member for Ferny Grove Dale Shuttleworth said there were 175,000 additional trips taken on the line since the trial started a year ago.

"More than two-thirds of those additional trips were taken off-peak which shows that our commitment to deliver more frequent train services is working," Mr Emerson said.

"The improved frequency means passengers on the Ferny Grove line can simply turn up and go with a train arriving every 15 minutes during the weekday off-peak period.

"It's encouraging to see people embrace this policy."

The $18 million trial to double the day-time off-peak services on the Ferny Grove line began on October 8, 2012.

Member for Ferny Grove Dale Shuttleworth said the commitment to extra services was taking cars off the road.

"The additional services are a real incentive for people to use public transport, leave their car at home and take the train to and from the city," Mr Shuttleworth said.

"The trial of extra services on the Ferny Grove line still has another year to run and I'd encourage even more people to get on-board."

The increase in services was an important LNP promise to end Labor's waste and improve the affordability, frequency and reliability of train services.

The reliability of peak train services recently hit a decade high of 96 per cent after falling to 86 per cent in the final months under Labor.

Cleveland Line should be next, relatively easy to do - just extend the Ferny Grove Extras from Park Road to Cannon Hill or Murrarie and then turn them back. This will assist network restructuring around bus feederisation into Morningside as a Key Interchange Point (KIP).

I suspect it will be extra Doomben trains and current Shorncliffe trains with Ferny Grove trains pushing south from Park Road rather than east.

10 trains per hour for Park Road in the off peak - 2 Gold Coast, 2 Beenleigh, 2 Cleveland, 2 on-the-way-to-Beenleigh shortworkings and 2 on-the-way-to-Cleveland shortworkings (wherever these latter 2 end up).  Mates up, respectively, with 2 Airport, 2 Ferny Grove, 2 Shorncliffe, 2 Ferny Grove extras, 2 Doomben.

14 trains per hour through the CBD - these plus 2 Ipswich to Caboolture and 2 Springfield to Bowen Hills (ignoring occasional others like Nambour or beyond services).

There still appears to be no prospect of better than 15 minute headways anywhere further out than Northgate, which is irritating in the extreme.

You have to wait for Kippa Ring to come online. But that's coming.
