QuoteBrisbane rail disruptions will require more buses, trucks over summer

Work on the Cross River Rail network in January will cause major train disruptions, forcing more people onto buses and more freight onto trucks.

Extended closures are required to reconfigure tracks to allow Cross River Rail to bolster the network.

While buses will again be used to ferry passengers, Queensland Rail is having to build a new transfer facility at Pinkenba to limit intermodal freight disruptions. ...

Interesting this is getting discussed now and frustrating yet typical lack of transparency from Translink, QR and of course CRT...

Caught a Cleveland line rail replacement service last weekend. The staff at the bus stop mentioned widespread closures, all day on weekdays starting in December once school holidays start...

^ Yo Cleveland line.  We have known about these closures since ( checks notes members only link  :is-  ) June 2023.

The lack of transparency is appalling but par for the course these days.

Extended track closures December 2023 - January 2024  - lack of transparency

18th November 2023

Growing community disquiet concerning the major planned track closures December 2023 through to January 2024.

It was reported by the Brisbanetimes yesterday ( https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/national/queensland/brisbane-news-live-qld-could-drop-south-east-rail-plan-best-brisbane-suburbs-for-swapping-house-for-unit-gen-z-the-most-hard-working-cohort-20231116-p5ekjg.html?post=p55frw#p55frw ) that

" Work on the Cross River Rail network in January will cause major train disruptions, forcing more people onto buses and more freight onto trucks.

Extended closures are required to reconfigure tracks to allow Cross River Rail to bolster the network.

While buses will again be used to ferry passengers, Queensland Rail is having to build a new transfer facility at Pinkenba to limit intermodal freight disruptions.

"The track closures scheduled for January will allow Cross River Rail to undertake critical track and civil works between Bowen Hills and Albion, including flood mitigation works such as track raising which goes towards preventing future freight interruptions," a Queensland Rail spokeswoman said.

Marianne Kintzel from the Refrigerated Warehouse and Transport Association told 4BC on Thursday the disruptions could cause price hikes and food shortages in regional areas.

Kintzel said the Pinkenba workaround would only support 25 per cent of the freight and double the cost of transport. "

We have known about these closures since June 2023 but have respected confidentiality, but seems no point now that it is out in the public domain.

The Queensland Rail Planned track closures - 12 month calendar is not updated with the closures ( https://www.queenslandrail.com.au/forcustomers/trackclosures/12monthcalendar )

Reports have been received of staff handling rail replacement buses warning passengers of the significant closures coming up at the end of year.

Don't you think it is time the travelling public was shown some courtesy and properly informed of these very significant closures, and the impact on their travel?
Also Airtrain services will be significantly impacted as well.

It is little wonder people are becoming somewhat disillusioned with the lack of transparency from CRRDA, Translink and Queensland Rail.
The period of the extended closures is a key travel period.  Timely notification is required so people can plan their travel, aware of the closures.

The lack of transparency is appalling, but par for the course these days it seems.

Thanks (yet again!) for drawing attention to this Bob. The lack of transparency just leads to more confusion and speculation - like I was told the closures would be from start of school holidays, presumably based on buses being contracted already?

They really don't learn do they... :fp:  :frs:

The announcements the other month on station closures for upgrades went fairly well because, well, they were actually announced!! And with decent consultation starting immediately. It's not that hard!!!

No worries CL.  Your comments were timely, coinciding with the BT short report yesterday.

Yes, the planned station closures has been handled well.

I understand why the Christmas/New Year northern  closures need to occur, we all do I guess, but they must let people know now exactly what is going on.

There is also the impact on freight services as well.

Forewarned is forearmed!

The other concern I have is weather.  I hope there is not too much rain around during the closures.  It could present some issues if there is.

Greetings,

Nary a response to the communication below.

The attitude of the Government,  and the public transport authorities is less than desirable.

We will be doing our best to get a much better public transport administration and network leading up to the 2024 Elections.

The wheels have fallen off the present one, in case you haven't noticed!

Keep well in your silos!

December to January extended possession

• These works require a 27-day extended track closure from 2am Saturday 23 December 2023 to 2am Friday 19
January 2024. Trains will resume service from the first trains on Friday 19 January 2024.

• Cross River Rail will be conducting works at Mayne Yard Balloon Loop and Albion realignment, Dutton Park, Yeerongpilly, Rocklea and Salisbury Station works and Yeerongpilly Junction.

• We have planned these works to occur during December and January as the network is usually less busy at this time.

• In addition to train impacts, there may be road and pedestrian disruptions, such as road closures, parking restrictionsin local streets, footpath changes, and increased construction traffic to support the ongoing works.

• The track closure will occur in ten stages across the closure period. All lines will experience altered timetables during the closure

Track closures in December and January for crucial Cross River Rail works

27th November 2023

Minister for Transport and Main Roads and Minister for Digital Services
The Honourable Mark Bailey

Extensive Cross River Rail works over quieter December and January period.

All train lines to experience changes to services at one time or another between 23 December and 18 January.

Plenty of alternative travel options available including rail replacement buses, with customers encouraged to allow extra travel time and plan journeys in advance.

Cross River Rail crews are preparing for one of their biggest operations yet with track closures and transport changes required from late December and then into January, to allow for critical works on the transformational project.

The track closures - taking place from 23 December 2023 until 18 January 2024 - will see all train lines on the SEQ rail network impacted at different stages.

The works will involve continuous intensive effort across multiple work sites to undertake substantial infrastructure works critical to Cross River Rail's completion, and will include track reconfigurations, tunnel portal works, accessibility upgrades to the stations between Dutton Park and Salisbury and track as well as civil works between Bowen Hills and Albion.

The nature of the work means that track closures are unavoidable and closed tracks also mean that the works can take place safely and efficiently within the rail corridor.

During the closures, there will be plenty of alternative transport options available, including replacement rail buses, and customers are encouraged to allow extra travel time and plan their journey before travelling.

A temporary road-to-rail transfer facility has also been built to ensure critical intermodal freight can continue to be transported to and from Brisbane.

The track closures end on Thursday January 18 with services returning to a regular timetable from first service on Friday 19 January 2024.

For more information about upcoming works and disruptions, visit Cross River Rail's Travel Checker.

To plan your journey in advance, download the MyTranslink app, visit www.translink.com.au or call 13 12 30.

The important works throughout December and January follow a road upgrade at the New Generation Rollingstock (NGR) Wulkuraka Depot, that will enable the delivery of onboard upgrades to the entire NGR fleet, and allow trains to operate on the Cross River Rail line

The NGR onboard upgrades to be fitted include:

European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2
Automatic Train Operation (ATO) and
Platform Screen Doors

These upgrades will be delivered in time for the start of services on the Cross River Rail infrastructure.

Quotes attributed to Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey:

"Cross River Rail will transform how we travel across South East Queensland in the future – but construction now does mean impacts to train services.

"Different tracks will need to close on different days from 23 December to 18 January, to allow for important Cross River Rail works, which will be critical to integrate the megaproject into the wider network and improve accessibility.

"While trains won't be able to operate across some parts of the network to ensure works can be carried out safely and efficiently, the works have been scheduled during the traditionally quieter December and January period to minimise impacts.

"However, we do know that some people will be affected, and we appreciate your patience while these important works are carried out.

"I'd also like to thank the hundreds of workers who will be delivering these works over the holiday period.

Quotes attributed to Cross River Rail CEO Graeme Newton:

"There is a huge scope of works including track realignments, raising tracks and signalling works.

"There will be plenty of accessibility improvements completed at several stations as well, including 45 tonnes of new overpass sections lifted into place at Dutton Park, installation of stairs and a lifts, and rubber fingers installed at Rocklea, that will reduce the gap between the train and platform.

"This is all critical work that requires continuous and intensive effort over a prolonged period of time in the rail corridor.

"We thank customers for their patience to allow this work to be completed safely and efficiently in the rail corridor.

Quotes attributed to Acting Head of Translink Peter Milward:

"There will be plenty of alternative transport arrangements available to get you where you need to be.

"You'll be able to catch express and all stop alternative transport services to get you to and from work or the airport

"There will be additional bus and train services on New Year's Eve, alternative travel options on Christmas Day and special event buses for the Brisbane International tennis event.

"We encourage you to consider your travel options, plan ahead and allow extra travel time.

"To plan your journey, download the MyTranslink app, visit translink.com.au or call 13 12 30.

The messaging seems to only emphasise trasnferring to these express services in the AM peak (prior to 9am) but nothing about what to do to in the PM peak returning? From the timetable list I think the advice is express from Roma Street to Northgate - which would be different to what people are being told in the morning from Northern lines, that is to change at Geebung...

And it also seems that Roma Street will be the 'city' stop, with no alternative stop for central? Probably sensible but again not communicated in the key messages...

To be expected and nothing new regarding extended closures as per the previous years.

There is likely more to come especially as the quad works and the Beerburrum to Beerwah duplication ramps up over the next couple of years.

I was quite surprised they had done it in stages rather than a full month shutdown with replacement buses.

Disappointing that both Translink and Queensland Rail are not reminding all of these looming closures.

I am doing regular updates on social media, but you would think the paid staff of said agencies would be more proactive.

Is morale fuked?  Probably ... all the signs are there.
