Southern Sunshine Coast Public Transport

It is almost as though more effort is put into the colours and graphics of the various 'holding point' documents the state government produces for the Sunshine Coast.

I checked a couple of graphic design sites and it would appear that the Queensland Government/TMR uses Blue and Green in its documentation to stop the reader 'seeing red'.

Green is a derivative of blue (with yellow added). It is supposed to convey happiness and peacefulness. Bright green represents 'energy'.

Blue: Safety, Happiness and creativity. Blue also is a colour that evokes reliability.

Red: Energy, warmth, mistakes, danger and failure.

So, not much red then.

Quote from: Stillwater on May 24, 2023, 00:10:57 AMFrom the document:

"The strategy does not specify a preferred public transport mode (i.e. rail, bus or light rail) on corridors."

"The strategy will be used to inform more detailed planning and business case assessments."

And this whopper:

"It also proposes the delivery of high-frequency public transport connections on the southern Sunshine Coast by 2041." (page 7, para 5).

So, it is a strategy that is 'nothing specific' and there still will be more planning and not much will happen before 2041 now...

They just keep pushing back the delivery date by another decade every time they issue a new vision, strategy, summary, connection blah blah blah.

It is beyond pitiful, closer to literally pathetic and the government response to actually implement something with budgeted funding is apathetic.

We should do a study on all these 'studies' to determine if any one system or item proposed in them has ever been completed.
I'd estimate we could count them on one hand.

To even describe the document as vacuous gives it too much substance/credit IMHO.

We go further backwards with every glossy brochure.
I see green and blue is in for this year.

BREAKING NEWS
No #rail Birtinya-Maroochydore

"The strategy will provide strategic network context for the detailed business case for a rail line extension into southern Sunshine Coast and a high-frequency public transport connection between Maroochydore and Birtinya."

Southern Sunshine Coast Transport Strategy March 2023 p11

This wording from the strategy suggests a rail line to only as far as Birtinya.

I'm not so concerned with the presence of three mode neutral corridors. That is pretty standard IMO.

What is a problem is the lack of action. Planning is one part of the infrastructure lifecycle.

Like actually building the thing.

The clear KPI by which these plans should be judged is their execution - how many km of double tracked rail has already been laid down?

Don't get distracted by all the bells and whistles. Action is hard to fake. Measure their performance based on that.

Reading the tea leaves, seems to be that Birtina is terminus, adjacent to SCUH and within cooee of bicycle ride to Uni, or light rail network along the coast. It smacks of the Redcliffe train that stops short at Kippa Ring and the decision to take duplication to Beerwah and not Landsborough, where all the planning has been focussed. Good find FF. (Why do we have to find out changes of policy by reading the fine print?)

Thank you SW.

Further..
This statement in the SSCTS March 2023 document pre-empts the #DSCL study we're told is underway and due to be completed in 2024.

It shows that results are known.
It shows, perhaps, that the study results are already complete.

Who decided the termination location and why?
Therefore, perhaps the cost is also known?

IF ( a big if ) the DSCRL gets a start my bet is it will only be to Caloundra, Birtinya will be a ' later ' stage.

We have noted Southern Sunshine Coast Transport Strategy March 2023 p11 "The strategy will provide strategic network context for the detailed business case for a rail line extension into southern Sunshine Coast and a high-frequency public transport connection between Maroochydore and Birtinya."
This suggests that the planning for the railway Beerwah to Maroochydore ( https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/projects/direct-sunshine-coast-rail-line-planning ) is more for show than fact.  It would appear that the outcome already determined is that rail extension from Beerwah will be yet another half baked detrimental outcome, terminating at Birtinya.

This wording from the strategy suggests a rail line to only as far as Birtinya.

This is also repeated on p3
The strategy will be used to inform more detailed planning and business
case assessments for road and public transport initiatives
, such as
a rail line extensjion (sic, typo) into the southern Sunshine Coast and a high-frequency
public transport connection between Maroochydore and
Birtinya.

It appears that this strategy will over-ride the current business case.

Well the upside is Birtinya is a little further than Caloundra. This is better than a Caloundra only spur option.

The 2041 'aspirational' timeline sucks though. Counting from 1999, that would be a 42 year delivery timeframe.

Seriously just reduce the scale/scope of the Mooloolah River Interchange similar to Stage 1 but as an end state by: (https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/_/media/projects/m/mooloolah-river-interchange-project/mooloolah-river-interchange-stage-1-plan.png):

  • a connection of the east-west and north-south freeways to make a continuous freeway
  • build a "minimalist interchange (aka no flying diamonds") to connect to Karawatha Dr and Nicklin Way
  • turn Brisbane Rd bridge into a active/transport bridge"

and use the saved money to build the whole way to Maroochydore

Take the road first blinkers off Minister.

So sick of these f@&k wits running  Queensland. Yet more corners. Keep up the pressure lads and get a position from the LNP and see what their plans are and push hard.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when was the last time a 40km rail (or road) project was built in one stage?

For mine, it seems logical to construct camcos from south to north, staged as Beerwah-Caloundra-Kawana-Maroochydore. Owing to the cost/complexities of Little Mtn and Mooloolaba River.
Similarly, SCLR would be constructed north to south Maroochydore-Kawana-Caloundra. So Kawana becomes a very attractive staging location for both modes to connect (and interchange, until such time that both are fully completed).

I'm also taking it with a grain of salt until the camcos BC is finished.

Perth did this with the Mandurah line in 2007, including tunnels under the Perth CBD

It also proposes the delivery of high-frequency public transport
connections on the southern Sunshine Coast by 2041.
p7

Our vision for a connected southern Sunshine Coast
consists of several key corridors and connections.
Each element is required by 2041 and has a distinct
role in supporting movements between our communities
and beyond.
p10

Southern Sunshine Coast Public Transport Strategy by DTMR (March 2023)

Like I said another strategy, plan, study, connection - another decade added to timelines.

One also has to appreciate the steps they take to make it harder to track their constantly changing timelines by renaming rail lines, strategies, studies etc.
Sir Humphrey (Yes, Minister) would be proud, as would Tony Woodford (Utopia).

Then there is the infamous Centre Corridor..
Description
Consisting of a protected
transport corridor and adjacent
parallel roads.

and finally, this admission of abject failure..
Places for People:
...The connected southern Sunshine Coast network identifies the coastal
corridor, including large sections of Nicklin Way, as transitioning to a
roadway that focuses less on the throughput of traffic, and more on
high quality urban design and 'place' outcomes.
This can be enabled by shifting longer distance trips and 'through
traffic' on to the future Mooloolah River Interchange and Kawana
Motorway,...
