Heavy rail extensions in SEQ, where are they?

29th March 2023

There's been a lot of talk in the press about the delays in building rail to Maroochydore, the first stage of which was supposed to be running by 2015.
Transport Minister Mark Bailey MP defended this, saying that it received $6m for planning.
The issue is however, it's not the only line stuck in planning. By 2031, SEQ was supposed to have 8 new heavy rail lines.
Only 2 out of the 8 ever got past the planning stage (Cross River Rail and the Redcliffe Peninsula line)
Along with the Sunshine Coast, places like Flagstone, Ripley and Coolangatta have been left on the back-burner.
Why should these areas continue to be fobbed off?

This is key message as part of the Campaign.

Not super happy with the images you've chosen there Jonno. The image of the highway widening includes the busway extension. We DO want more busway extensions. Also the image bottom right is too "nice" looking. Pick some apocalyptic picture of a 20 lane freeway from LA or something.

Park 'n' Rides are also extremely popular, I don't think this campaign should focus on asking for "stopping" them. Let's just focus on what we DO want.

can make more apocalyptic for sure! Think we need to focus on rail surrounding too it's part of the rail! Freeways are popular too! Let me try again

If we can somehow attribute lack of transport action to Congested freeways, and transport action to uncongested freeways, I think that could make for some strong imagery. We want to get everyone on board, including the road users themselves!

Images look fine to me Jonno.  But the text box either needs enlargement or perhaps not needed?

Thanks.

This is some great stuff, excellent concepts.
Is our campaign saying that the goal should be to build all 8 lines by 2032?

I like it because it's important to be concrete but there is room for us to use a different list or say that we need to finish 6 by 2032 and commence construction on the other 2.

We should also have an item for "upgrading the current system" - full ETCS, upgrade the Cleveland line, duplication on the north coast, new passing loops on doomben line etc.

Finally we should come up with some headline figures:
 - costs: it might even be good to say we need to spend billions.
 - potential passenger numbers. An expanded and upgraded network could surely move 150 million a year plus.
 - Traffic changes, how much congestion could be helped.

Can we put in a link to their own video "Connecting SEQ 2031" in the references? Its their own marketing material  :2thumbs:

The Doomben line can be upgraded to be the "Olympic line" playing into parliamentary egos that like dramatic names.

I think for $1 billion you could extend the line to the proposed Olympic village/Hamilton and upgrade all of the stations to dual platform. On such a short line that should enable a significant increase in frequency and ridership.

Just because you could doesn't mean you should :P

Doomben line is a sitter for major upgrade and extension to new Olympic Village...HEAPS of opportunities for high density along it's corridor!
SEQ, where our only "fast-track" is in becoming the rail embarrassment of Australia!   :frs:

You can say that about anywhere. There are always opportunities doesn't mean that they will happen. Most opportunities have come from cashed up developers buying sh%t holes and squeezed as many dwellings they can onto it. Outside of that properties become too expensive to buy and developers make minimal return so look elsewhere for a better profit margin.

AJ Transport

If the government truly intends to build huge amounts of housing around the olympic village site in Hamilton it would be reckless not to have a plan for rail infrastructure for the area.

These are the kinds of rail infrastructure that could more than pay for themselves with developer contributions or value capture processes.
