I would like to see Central renamed to Anzac Sq and Albert Street remaining the same, but with additional wording in brackets.

Albert Street Station
(Meeanjin)

I'd like to go back and rename Roma St "Brisbane Terminal" as it is where the majority of long-distance services terminate. A few suburbans too, during peak hour.

Quote from: verbatim9 on August 09, 2022, 18:21:05 PMAs it was mentioned again in the media this week, I would like to see Central renamed to Anzac Sq and Albert Street remaining the same, but with additional wording in brackets.

Albert Street Station
(Meeanjin)

Why not:

Meanjin
(Albert Street)

ie Meanjin is the name of the station but it's near Albert Street if that helps people orientate?

Is it worth drafting this up as a formal proposal and send to the minister. We can always present them as possible "options" with a little blurb as to the logic, eg:

Cross River Rail and the new Gold Coast stations area major addition to the network.
It will require a major update to signage, timetables and printed material across the network to show the new lines and stations.
Therefore, it can make sense to do some "spring cleaning" and make changes to other station names at the same time to present a legible network to passengers.

RAIL Back on Track proposes the following station names.

Park Road
Rename to "Boggo Road"
There were unsuccessful attempts to rename this station when the busway was built, but with Cross River Rail opening and the Boggo Road urban village more developed it is high time this issue was revisited.
It makes no sense to have separate names for different parts of the same station complex.
It would avoid confusion with Park Road Milton.

Whilst we are aware some locals would prefer the station name remain the same, it is more important to make things legible for the larger number of passengers who will now rely on this as an interchange location.

Roma Street
Rename to "Brisbane" station.

Why?
In most major cities, the main hub station is simply named after the name of the City.
For example the main station in Perth is simply called "Perth"
Alternatively, signage could say Brisbane (Roma Street)

Americanized names such as "Grand Central" should be avoided.

Albert Street
Rename to "Meeanjin"

Why?
This will be the first new station in 100 years, and occupies a important location in the heart of the CBD peninsular.
The indigenous name for this place is Meeanjin so it makes sense for the name of the station to acknowledge it's place in the context of Brisbane.
The station may also be called Meeanjin (Albert St)

Central
Rename to "Anzac Square"

Why?
Central is no longer central, given Roma Street will become the main interchange location, and Albert St is more geographically central.
ANZAC square reflects the importance of the war memorial and better describes the exact location of the station.

Queen Street
Rename to "Queen Street Mall"
This change would make sense as part of other changes to CBD station names.
It more accurately describes the specific location of the station along the broader length of Queen Street and reflects the importance of the Queen Street Mall as a landmark and meeting place.

Thomas St
Rename to "Sadliers Crossing"

Why?
Where possible the suburb name should be used in preference.
The name Thomas Street has no significance to people outside of the immediate local area. It is just a minor suburban street without any commercial or public facilities.
Every other station on the Ipswich line bears the suburb name, so it is unclear why this is named differently.

Springfield
Rename to "Springfield Lakes"

Why?
This was a controversial decision at the time. The station straddles the boundary of two suburbs, but is technically in just inside Springfield.
We are aware it is Translink convention to name stations for the physical location of the station, but this can sometimes be unintuitive.
For example Helensvale North was also considered unintuitive by the public, hence the public preference to name the station Hope Island.
Translink should also consider where the bulk of the station catchment comes from.
In this case, most of the station catchment is in Springfield lakes.

Naming it Springfield Lakes creates a clearer distinction to Springfield Central.

Great proposal, Gazza.

Grammar check #2: "first CBD station in 100 years".

Big Brain idea, Americanised should be spelt with a z to make it autological.

Central - Anzac Sq
Albert Street - Albert Street Station (Meanjin)
Roma Street - Roma Street Central, Roma Street Grand Central. or Roma Street Interchange.
Upper Mt Gravatt - Westfield Mt Gravatt
Herston Station - Victoria Park Station
South Brisbane Station - Cultural Centre Station

It would be nice to also rename Wynnum, Gailes, Bindha and Holmview Stations to 'This Station is Closed' Station...

verbatim9

This is not a station elimination thread, yet underutilised stations need addressing.

TMR needs to consider renaming Park Road to the new CRR station, as this is essentially going to be one station and interchange.

Not sure of the naming of Roma Street yet. I find there is a real affiliation with the name Roma Street and should be part of the name going forward. Same goes with Albert Street and with my suggestion of Meeanjin, is more recognition than affiliation, hence having it in brackets as a sub name. Most people rather affiliate a station name with a land mark, geographical point, or point of interest. This is proven worldwide as the best way of naming stations and stops.

Re: Anti American sentiment should not come into play here as they generally follow correct naming conventions like other parts of the world.

Sorry to keep at this, but just to be clear, Meanjin/Meeanjin is a geographical name, and well describes the location of the station. It is becoming more and more common to use the original names of places alongside the English name, and I believe it is both healthy for our country and interesting and distinctive. "Albert Street" could easily be anywhere in the English speaking world, but "Meeanjin" could only be here. The New Zealanders do this very well, and it is wonderful to see so many places primarily identified with the Maori names. Taranaki used to be called Mt Egmont on maps. Nobody lost the connection to the place.

I think street names are actually pointless names for train stations, but are good for local bus stops to identify the stop location along a main road, for example. I would be more than happy for "Roma Street" to become something else, just as "Brunswick Street" and "Vulture Street" did - nobody misses those names now, and there is not a single association of "Albert Street" with any station. We don't need it.

The important possible changes for now are Central > Anzac Square
(there is a lot of growing support for this)

Roma St > Brisbane  As you know Roma St was originally called Brisbane Terminal station 1875-1889

Albert St > Meeanjin  Also support for this.

That's about all their limited attention spans can cope with.

We will focus on that for now.  Other issues later.

With respect to Park Road/Boggo Road - I am sure they will name the station area - new and old > Boggo Road

(this is as it is shown on the SEQ Rail Connect map diagrams)

These station names are no-brainers.  It has been suggested to me that renaming Central and Albert St is very difficult.  Well fuk me!  It ain't.  It is time that the Government and the authorities actually acted with some common-sense and purpose. Other jurisdictions get it.

Queensland shivers with trepidation in the shadows.  Time you grew a set or three  :lu:  :lu:  :lu:
