Stuff.co.nz--> Electric ferry makes maiden passenger voyage across Wellington Harbour

QuoteWellington's pioneering electric passenger ferry has made its first public sailing across Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

The Ika Rere (flying fish) docked at Queens Wharf carrying 54 passengers from Days Bay on Tuesday morning. East By West Ferries managing director Jeremy Ward said the trip marked a new chapter in sustainable public transport for the city.

"It's been a long road to get here. We're very excited to have got to this point."

Ward said a lot had been made of the Ika Rere being the first electric passenger ferry in the Southern Hemisphere, but there were very few electric craft in the world that came close to its performance.

This could so easily, yet effectively be done here. KG Road, Gympie Rd, OCR, Logan Rd and Ipswich Rd would be my contenders.

And instead we are getting non-prioritized transit lanes in the outer lanes of Gympie road during peak times only.

God knows why they gave in to the businesses claim that no on street parking will mean no one will want to visit anymore. It's an arterial road for goodness sakes, not a suburban street! It's main objective is to efficiently transport people. Alas we just end up with this half arsed, people pleasing joke of a project.

Railway Gazette International --> Dual-voltage suburban line opened in Chongqing

QuoteCHINA: The Jiangtiao suburban line in Chongqing has opened, linking Tiaodeng with Shengquansi. An unusual feature of the line is dual voltage electrification, with the northern section from Tiaodeng to Shilinsi and the Zhongliangshan tunnel electrified at 1·5 kV DC and the rest of the route at 25 kV 50 Hz.

The 28·4 km line opened on August 6 includes a 5·9 km underground section and 22·5 km elevated or at-grade. There are seven stations including the Jiangjin High Speed Railway station.

Services are operated by Chongqing Rail Transit using 15 six-car 120 km/h CRRC Changchun Type As trainsets.

There are six trains per hour in the morning and evening peaks and four per hour off peak, with a journey time from Tiaodeng to Shengquansi of 28 min. ...

SurfRail

At least these haven't actually been built (as I understand it).

Unlike in NSW for Mt Victoria to Lithgow, I understand there was no plan to "fix" any structure gauge issues over there and this was a genuine ballsup.

^^That's 157,320,000.00 billion AUD over the next 17 years only in rail.

Plus you have other public transport investments which would bring the total investment much higher.

They have the advantage of having nuclear power generation as well to help power their train network. Something Australia needs to think about in the medium term.

SurfRail

Why?  The grid will be nearly 100% powered by renewables by the time any nuclear generating station opened even if a contract was signed yesterday.  The only reason to have a nuclear fuel cycle in this country is to build nuclear weapons.
Ride the G:

verbatim9

That's taking it a bit too far in referencing nuclear arsenal.

Most countries around the world that have HSR or fast electric rail also have a secure base load electricity generation sourced from nuclear energy. This is on top of their other renewable strategies.

OzGamer

Please please please don't let this place become overrun by nuclear bros like twitter. The source of energy has zero to do with the rail network. An electric train's motor could not care less where the electrons come from.

Correct.

As I mentioned above, literally the only reason to pursue nuclear power in this country is to build bombs.  Basically every other generation method is cheaper.  The whole concept of "baseload" is cobblers anyway.

Plenty of countries with Nuclear but no HSR

Massive Danish Car Tax

Data from the Danish Tax Office
https://skat.dk/data.aspx?oid=2244599

QuoteVehicle registration tax rates

For all cars and motorbikes, the vehicle registration tax is calculated on the basis of the taxable value, i.e. the value including VAT, but excluding vehicle registration tax. The figures in the table below are stated at the 2022 level.

Vehicle registration tax

Private cars

25% of DKK 65,800
85% of DKK 65,800-204,600
150% of the rest.

In AUD terms this is:
25% of $14,245.92 <--- $3561.48 Fee
85% of $14,245.92 - $44,317.59 <--- Up to an additional $37,669.95 on top
150% of the rest.

What this suggests is that the high PT usage in Denmark and possibly other EU Countries might not just be about urban design and PT service provision. There are also high taxes and fees placed on car ownership in European countries, such as high registration costs, carbon taxation, restrictions on free parking, cordon tolling, or high costs for doing the course that leads to getting a car licence.
