Hope not.  We would expect the very latest next generation system.  Opal is already years old.

Yes, opals are found in Queensland.  I have one in my drawer (opal card that is) ..  :P

Yes definitely we will be wanting the best up to date model for statewide use :)

ozbob

Well,  don't get excited, but it will be another 3 and a half years or so yet before there is the possibility of a new system ..

Cubic Signs Three-Year Contract Extension to Operate and Maintain Brisbane go card System

Cubic also set to respond to TransLink Expression of Interest (EOI) for next-generation transportation smart card system arriving in 2019

SAN DIEGO, Calif., Nov. 19, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via PRWEB - Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS), a business unit of Cubic Corporation (NYSE: CUB), today announced it has signed a three-year contract extension with TransLink commencing in September 2016, to continue operating and maintaining the go card smart card system in the Australian state of Queensland.

The announcement continues the contract between TransLink and Cubic until September 2019.

TransLink recently issued an Expression of Interest for the new go card system contract which Cubic has responded to.

The contract between TransLink and Cubic began in 2003 with the award of the region's first smart card-based integrated ticketing system and services for public transport in Southeast Queensland.

Today, go card is a reliable platform providing seamless travel for the region's 1.2 million rail, light rail, bus and ferry customers.

I expect considerable improvements over the next 3 year period in ticketing systems which we will not see here in SEQ.

Government has known for years that the contract was up 2016.  It is a measure of the lack of forward thinking and funding that the present system has been extended this time for another 3 years (FROM SEPTEMBER 2016 don't forget ... ).

Hey ho ...

Our only hope of some improvement is the fare review, which is in slow motion of course.  As are most things in Queensland ...

The go card is a very limited in what it can do as has been explained here many times.   Don't wish for much, that way a little surprise seems like a big win hey?

Not surprising since Cubic invested time and money into real time arrivals. Apparently Cubic can apply a software patch to allow phones to touch on and off. So I am pretty sure we will see that enhancement over the next 6 months.

^ go card is not an account based system.  This rules out open payment.

Yeah it would be a bit more than a software "patch", but it should still be able to be a software-driven update.  (The hardware should be able to read NFC cards/devices.)

The NGTS needs to be rolled out BEFORE September 2019.  If Cubic gets the contract (expected to be finalised early 2017), there is nothing stopping the timelines being significantly sooner than the end of the contract extension.

Who knows... we could see something as early as 2018.   :pfy:

The back end of the present go card system cannot handle it.  There is no way money will be invested to try to patch the existing system.

Our only hope is the NG system.

I hope I have won lotto by 2018 and I am resident on 5 minute train frequency corridor somewhere ...  :bi

The upgrade path will be interesting.

I guess Cubic is in the box seat as the they would be able to progressively roll out their NextAccount system concurrent with the go card - Nextfare.

Nothing will happen until tender for NG system is finalised.

This confirms that we will be with our present go card for many years yet.  A problem with the present go card system is that is limited as to options for fares and so forth.  It is NOT an account-based system.  The move to an account-based system (next-generation) as flagged above will open up many options for a fare structure and payment eg. bank cards, mobile devices as well as the base card.

The fare review is presently underway ( http://translink.com.au/tickets-and-fares/fares/fare-review-ToR ), this is now even of more major importance as fare un-affordability in SEQ continues to be unsatisfactory. Slimey sadly.  Even the way the Snap shot data is slide out late Friday in order to try to avoid scrutiny.

A transparent regime would put it out with a statement, with a short commentary on the highlights (there are some) and the lowlights and how it will be addressed.

Not banana-land, let's slide it out Friday and hope no one notices ... Brisbane media et al.

Readers may not be aware but when the Tracker was being published, there were two versions.  The larger version had a lot of data, and truly indicated the issues and good things well, for internal Government use only.  The version that was made public was sanitised and cut down, spun to look good.

How do we know?  Well one day, they posted the wrong version up on the TransLink website.  I was lucky to actually grab it and started to circulate it.  I thought at the time, this is wonderful, real data, warts and all.  Errr,  about 10 minutes later I was phoned.  The wrong version had been made public and would I pull it.

Real sign of what actually goes on.

A draft statement.

October 2015 TransLink public transport performance snapshot data

The Minister for Great Projects and Railways and Busways and Monorails

The Minister has today announced that the October 2015 TransLink public transport performance snapshot is now available at this website >
https://publications.qld.gov.au/dataset/translink-public-transport-performance-snapshots

We are pleased that apart from the affordability Key Performance Indicator (KPI) KPIs are generally above a satisfactory level.

Of concern is the affordability KPI, and to this end we have commissioned a fare review.  We hope the results of this review will be in by 2031.

Bus reliability is the next lowest KPI after the rock bottom affordability KPI.  We will commission and implement bus reform for Brisbane.  It is not acceptable to have such a poorly performing bus network.

Feedback is always welcome at TransLink.

Typical ... kick the can down the road to be dealt with in the next term of government, maybe even by the other side of politics.  Things transport are too hard in Queensland.

The system is held together with wire and string.  Policy is non-existent or is for 'show' only (in glossy publications and on websites with pretty pictures).  Strategies likewise.  On again, off again projects, re-scoped, rejigged and done again (CRR, Bat, CRR again, whatever).  Promises not kept (bus review and fare reform).

The whole thing has become an industry of inaction, the only bright light being when the feds or private sector toss some money at the state government (Springfield, MBLR, GCLR II).  TMR officers with nothing to do cannibalise previous reports and re-do them, EIS lapses (SCL).  Tenders called, then cancelled (SCL, Nambour disability lift Version 1) - a sign of confusion and churn over what is a priority and what is not.

No Queensland Infrastructure Plan, no 'pipeline of projects'.  If there is a pipeline, it is clogged with sh*t.

Minister with too much on her plate letting things drift.  Lack of accountability and transparency.  Lack of money, with little stomach to consider options.  Even GST increase actively resisted, no development of alternatives.

All of this seems to be a product of a government whose guiding principle is to do as little as possible so as not to rock the boat and hope to glide across the line at the next election.

Account based ticketing system required for Queensland's public transport users

Quote... An account based system processes ticketing data through a back-office network managed by a service provider. This is in contrast to the current smart card ticketing system which holds ticketing data on the card's chip and operates on a prepaid system. An account based system facilitates payment for transport fares by contactless credit cards or debit cards, for example via MasterCard's PayPass or Visa's payWave. The account funds and information are then stored on the back-office network rather than on the card's chip ...

Media release 22nd November 2015

SEQ: Fare unaffordability crisis continues - Time for fare action

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport passengers has said the October 2015 Public transport performance data again has ' affordability ' as the standout failure of the KPIs.

Robert Dow, Spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"The unaffordability of fares is again the key standout failure of the latest TransLink Key Performance Indicators - October 2015 (1, 3, 4). There is no doubt that the previous State Governments and TransLink have failed to deliver a fare system that is equitable, drives patronage and assists in mobilising our community. The failure to properly sort the SEQ fare structure is a very sad indictment on previous Governments."

"To the credit of the present State Government, a fare review is underway, but it is in slow motion unfortunately - as with most things in Queensland."

"Cubic has just announced overseas that the go card contract has been extended to 2019 (2). So we will be using the go card for a number of years yet. It is therefore important that the failed fare structure in SEQ be fixed, and fixed promptly. Waiting for the next election is not acceptable."

"It is also disappointing that such important news concerning the go card is found out from overseas websites. It is though the public transport community in Queensland does not really matter."

It is worth thinking about why this may be (no plan or a plan that is not followed). Queensland cannot commit to its plans because it almost always requires Federal cash input. This means that what the Australian Government (and indirectly competition with other states) decides what gets built and when, rather than what the QLD Government has planned.

I think TransLink need to set up a detailed information page explaining what it is.  How it will broadly operate and so forth.

Why bother? They just renewed the current Cubic contract to 2019. All you need to say on an FAQ page is "It isn't happening because we didn't want to make decisions because Campbell Newman made decisions and he got voted out."
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?
