Sydney commuters now have access to six new apps that will track the location of their train ride in real time.

Each of the apps offer different features such as predicting arrivals and issuing advice on trip planning.

One actually provides a voice-over notification reminder to get off at the correct stop.

NSW Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian said on Thursday the government-funded apps differ from previous transport applications because they use live-tracking and satellite information.

"Before people were relying on the timetables as they were printed. This gives people real-time information and that's the key thing, so people can find out if their trains are running on time," she said.

The apps cover trains on the Western, Bankstown, Inner West, Northern, Cumberland, Airport and East Hills, South and North Shore lines.

Most are free, with some versions costing up to $2.99.
