Architects let imagination run wild in city

A double layered, curved, pedestrian cross-river bridge linking Alice Street to Kangaroo Point and an underground shopping mall akin to Sydney's Queen Victoria Building are among the proposals Brisbane's top urban designers have brought before City Hall by in a bid to transform the city.

The designs will be launched by Lord Mayor Graham Quirk on Thursday as he kicks off the start of public consultation for the City Centre Master Plan by way of an Ideas Fiesta announced earlier this year.

Cr Quirk said the concepts came about after the council challenged leading consultants and design and architecture students to deliver proposals on how to improve the city's design.

But he warned residents not to get too excited, saying the concepts were "aspirational" and as such were intended to "stimulate conversation" rather than stand as concrete blueprints for the future.

"Vibrant city centres are at the economic and social heart of successful cities, and as Brisbane's economy grows we need to ensure we have an attractive and accessible city centre that draws people to live, work, trade, visit and mingle," Cr Quirk said.

Those values are very evident in eight concepts to be unveiled at the launch event, and will form the basis of eight more designs yet to be revealed.

In addition to the Kangaroo Point pedestrian bridge proposed by Richard Kirk Architects, comes a Conrad Gargett Riddel design which creates new pedestrian and cycle connections between Roma Street Parklands, Hardgrave Park, residential areas and Victoria Barracks via a series of bridges.

Meanwhile the "City West" concept by Architectus turns William Jolly Bridge into a pedestrian and public transport bridge, and proposes a spiral-shaped events space connecting Roma Street with The Barracks.

And there would be boardwalks, a new public wharf, floating parks, a 50-metre river pool and pontoons to host temporary activities such as fresh food markets, live music and multi-sport courts if "Queen's Wharf" by Lat27 was realised.

The three-week long fiesta, which comprises events such as street picnics, live music and fashion shows, continues from Thursday, with council officers on-hand to accept feedback and capture ideas.

Submissions to the council can also be made via email, letter, phone or social media.

Other design concepts include:

Retail Heart by Urbis

Urbis has prepared an aspirational vision for the Retail Heart of the city. Its design concept for Edward Street looks at three levels of retail along the street and reduces traffic to three lanes to accommodate wider tree lined footpaths.

Northern Gateway by Owen and Vokes and Peters

Owen and Vokes and Peters has created a design concept that features Centenary Place as an open space and commemorative square. It's design imagines Centenary Place as a busy neighbourhood common with nearby Barry Parade transformed into a high street with opportunities for new mixed use commercial and high density residential living.

Central Station by Bureau Proberts, Urban Art Projects & Ai3D

The Bureau Proberts, Urban Art Projects & Ai3D team has taken its design inspiration for Central Station from original 1902 blueprints to create a new lower level connecting through to Anzac Square. The design proposes returning the heritage building to its original use and includes ideas such as see-through pedestrian tubes to connect people to Spring Hill. It also proposes sculptural roofs to the new Central Station.

Alice St/Kangaroo Pt Foot Bridge is needed!  Yes, more underground shopping in city is inevitable AND bonus, it will help pave the way forward for underground rail!  (rent revenue to help with funding???)

:clp:  Good, progressive ideas that have the potential to help take the Brisbane CBD forward!
SEQ, where our only "fast-track" is in becoming the rail embarrassment of Australia!   :frs:

QuoteBrisbanetimes --> Mayor doubles consultation period on city plan

I think it shows what a charade and farce the bus reviews conducted by BCC and to a lesser extent, TL are.
Read the article:

QuoteThe council has placed the plan online and hosted "talk to a planner" sessions, as well as setting up information kiosks.

How many talk to a planner sessions did TL or BCC host with the bus review? Zero.

QuoteThe council will host an additional 60 community consultation sessions between May 6 and July 30.
All feedback will be formally recorded.

At the end of the consultation process, the plan, if needed, will be revised and sent back to the state government for a final review.

How many kiosks or community consultation sessions did BCC or TransLink hold for the bus review? Zero.

The zip line must be the new plan to get people over a congested Merivale and Victoria Bridges for when they need to start terminating the services just before they reach the city ala pre 1979.  WHEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!  :bg: :bna:

Just when it couldn't get more mad:

1. Buses pretending to be trains (okay)
2. Trains feeding buses (getting worse)
3. CityCycle (err)
4. 2000 express buses down legacy way
5. Clem 7 tunnel then building another tunnel on the premise that "this time it will be different" and impossible forecasts only for it to collapse, again
6. QLD Gov't requesting $715 million for Cross River Rail, it being granted, and then QLD Gov Refusing to take what they asked for
7. Trailers on Trains
8. Doing the bus review and then doing it twice
9. Segways
10. Removing bus lane on Coronation Drive
11. The Cleveland Solution
12. Letting Brisbane Transport capture the regulator, carte blanche

What next?

That's what the legal executives in all of Brisbane's top legal public liability and injury law firms will say if this proposal ever gets to reality. :fo:
