Changes to Milton train station access

Last updated: 4.38pm Tuesday 19 February 2013

The current entry stairs from Railway Terrace will be demolished.

Train services will not be disrupted, and customer access from Milton Road and the lift from Railway Terrace will remain open.

From Monday 27 October, there'll be temporary changes to platforms and entrances at Milton station.  These changes are due to construction works associated with the Transit Oriented Development project.

A snapshot of the upcoming changes is below.

Improvement works on the station should be completed by April 2015, including:

a new station entrance with improved access, including new lifts, escalators and stairs
a new extended platform providing level entry access to the train, and improved shelter, lighting, seating and information displays.
If you require assisted access to the station, contact Queensland Rail on 13 16 17 or speak to station staff.

We appreciate your patience while these works are underway.

Upcoming changes

Week commencing Monday 27 October

Weekdays between 4.21pm and 5.57pm, Ipswich express services will not stop at Milton station. Ipswich and Rosewood customers from Milton can catch a Springfield service from platform 3 and change to an Ipswich service at Indooroopilly or Darra stations
Plan your journey as connection times up to 15 minutes are expected.
Early February 2015
Platform 1 scheduled to reopen. Train services will begin to service the platform
Access to platform 1 via the stairs at the Park Road end of the platform.
Early March 2015
New station entrance from Railway Terrace scheduled to partially re-open from early March 2015
Access to platform 1 and the station concourse will be via escalator and stairs.
Early April 2015
Station entrance will fully re-opens from April 2015
Full station access open via lift, escalator and stairs.
Want more information?

Email the Queensland Rail team or call 13 16 17.

For more details on the Transit Oriented Development project visit The Milton website.

I'll be making these changes in my app this week. Pity Translink haven't bothered to do the same

Are they only raising platform 1 (ie because it happens to abut the development)?

Also worth noting that this means ALL outbound services from Milton to Indro (and possibly Sherwood) will depart from platform 3 until platform 1 at Milton reopens

I honestly don't understand this decision... The IPS Express trains run through the City 3mins behind the SFC all stoppers... How is not stopping the expresses at Milton going to save any time at all? All I can see that it will do is have the express catch up to the all stopper even quicker... It just seems like an absolutely pointless, unneeded disruption?

I expect that the suburbans will still be open during the platform raising a la South Brisbane station upgrade. So the IPS expresses will just use the subs, and the SFC all stoppers the mains.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

Appears platforms are affected all the way to Sherwood, passed an Ipswich train on platform 3 at Chelmer on my way into the city this morning.

So are they seriously only doing one platform with this project?

Gah.

That is possible, depending on the work being down. However as of Thursday last week, traincrew hadn't been told a thing about what was going on, so I have no idea, and I am on holidays now!

Will there be any new go card readers on platform 1 when it reopens?

All passenger trains are running on the mains today. Even though the PIDs say otherwise.

EDIT: Seems to be back to normal now.

WHAT I'm really looking forward to, is after QR/QT been advised in 2003, 2004, 2005........2013 and now 2014, is that in 2081, under the QR/QT "Fast-tracked Decision Action Program" e-signage - with that real mid-70's look - will be installed at the Baroona Rd tunnel entrance/Park Rd entry - so people entering that station by said routes, will also know which platform to head to - before the pathways split in to very different directions for the different platforms!  Having installed e-signs at the stadium end over a decade earlier and obviously completely forgetting about the other end of the train station  :fp:, the 2081 speedy response plan, is sure to wow the locals!

I received the following handout from a translink employee as I left Milton Station this morning.

Platform one is open, however there is currently no access to the overpass above to take you across to Milton Road and there is currently only one exit, on the Park Road side. In order to leave the platform you have to walk all the way down to the subway at the end of the platform. While this isn't an issue for me, since I'm young and mobile, I think it is an issue for older people or disabled people who cannot use the stairs at the end of the platform very easily. I was behind an elderly lady who had to go down the stairs very slowly. A disabled person in a wheelchair would definitely need assistance to access that platform at the moment, since the lift is not currently in operation. There is a phone number on the handout that you can ring though, if you need help. There are also several construction workers there when I left the station, so potentially they would be able to help as well.

According to the handout, the Railway Terrace entrance, and I'm assuming the lift as well, will be closed until late April.

...and looks like there's still only 1 go card reader.

bcasey

There are several go-card readers along platform one that you can use to wave on and off (or do you mean the go-card station where you can add funds to your card?)

bcasey

An alternative for anyone who is disabled or would find walking down stairs difficult would be to transfer to the 470 or 475, they have a stop right outside the station on milton road. Its not an ideal situation though, since they don't stop inside the Roma Street Busway Stop, but across the road on Roma Street.

There's only 1 reader at the Park Road end of the station which always seems to be well used.

bcasey

I got off from the 5th car this morning, and used the go-card reader that was situated near where the stairs to the overpass used to be. I also passed at least 1 or 2 more go-card readers before I got the Park Road side of the platform.

Although, now that a lot of people who get off at Milton Station are aware of the current situation of the platform, I imagine most of them will now get on the first couple of cars, to minimise their walk to the exit, and therefore the go-card reader at the end will probably end up having a long queue.

bcasey

I had to make a quick trip to Toowong and back to Milton today, so I double checked what go-card readers there are at each exit. There is definitely two readers at the Park Road exit of platform one, but only one at that end of platform 2/3 and platform 4. Platform 4 also has one on the other exit, and Platform 2/3 has one at the bottom of each flight of stairs up to the overpass.

The Springfield train I caught this morning (depart Roma Street 8:15) stopped on platform one at Milton Station (as opposed to platform 3 which it has done for the last couple of months). The access from platform 1 to the overhead bridge is now open, via both stairs and an escalator. The access down to Railway Terrace is not yet open though. It looks pretty flash, since it is now part of "The Milton" apartment building.

Are you saying there now is electronic signage at the Baroona Rd end?  In that case  :-w
However if you are suggesting it be installed and is long overdue, then join the club :ttp:
Ah Translink - not an ounce of common sense in the whole organisation

SteelPan

I'm joining the club...I've asked multiple times...for over a decade...Nothing!  If you're not a mind-reader, as you approach the station from Baroona Rd, it's a "lucky dip" as to which platform you head for and access splits into two very different paths- so if you get it wrong, you've at least, got an irritating walk to another platform ahead of you, or you miss a train maybe!   :steam:

Translink/Stat Govt so dumb, they installed them at the Lang Park end....but forgot completely about - the other end of the station!!!!!!!!
