Interesting that BrizCommuter bagged this design at Ferny Grove.

Services are knocked back to Murrarie?  Perhaps that is more because of the issue with one of the tracks there.  Surely they could run to Manly?

ozbob

Many have bagged the design of Ferny Grove, I raised it directly with the former Member and Minister  Mr Wilson early on ...  to no avail ...

BrizCommuters posting about this building arrangement being banned in the UK was the first thing I thought of too!

HappyTrainGuy

It's a terminus so the speed has to be very slow before the train is even at the station. 20kph iirc. The same applies to stations like Shorncliffe aswell. Whatever the problem it has happened from a fair distance away from the station.f

Services has now resumed to Wellington Point.  Buses still in place between Wellington Pt and Cleveland according to both the TL and QRail twitters.

New station building is at the end of the line so an overrun will take it out.  Old design didn't have that limitation.

Incident involving a train at Cleveland - 11.30 AM

About 9:40am, a train passed the end of the track and collided with the station building at Cleveland.

All customers and staff have safely left the train and station building.

We are advised the Queensland Ambulance Service has assessed 19 people, including the 13 customers onboard the train, the train driver and guard, and the staff and customers in the station building at the time.

The overhead powerlines were damaged in the incident, and Queensland Rail has cut the power to the scene.

Services are currently suspended between Cleveland and Wellington Point, and eight buses are being used to transport customers to these stations.

The Rail Safety Regulator is on site.

Queensland Rail will issue an update in one hour.

Incident involving a train at Cleveland - 1.00 pm

About 9:40am, the 7:55am Doomben to Cleveland train passed the end of the track and collided with the station building at Cleveland.

Emergency services have left the scene and there were no serious injuries.

It is too early to speculate on the cause of the incident.

Queensland Rail is keeping the Rail Safety Regulator fully informed on our comprehensive investigation, which will use CCTV, the train's 'black box' and other reports. There is no indication at this early stage of systemic issues with this model of train.

It is not appropriate to speculate on this incident while investigations are being completed.

Services are currently suspended between Cleveland and Wellington Point, and eight buses are being used to transport customers to these stations.

A recovery crew will arrive on site this afternoon to plan the removal of the train.

Further updates will be provided this afternoon.

Sadly this has hit me close to home.  I've been in a bit of shock this morning as a long time mate of mine was working at the station at the time of the crash, and the pics I'm seeing of him, he looks shaken up  :(.

The Mayne shunters should now be waiting at the previous station. They'll tow the 5 cars and crane the lead unit out.

Stillwater

Once upon a time, people were waiting at  the station for the train to take them to the city.  It was a brand new station with shiny paint and no graffiti.  The station master was busy in the office, people were getting their tickets and sitting at the platform or drinking at the bubbler, waiting for the train to turn the bend and slow to a stop.  A lady was in the toilet having a wee, because she wasn't sure whether the train would have a working toilet..........etc.

Moral of the story - don't build terminus station buildings at the same level as the track, across the track.  Quite apart from the safety implications, maybe in 2031, you may want to extend the line - no matter how remote the possibility today.

Gympie Railway Station, 1882.  Why would we ever want to extend the line from Maryborough toward Brisbane?

EDIT: actually, I think the original Ipswich station at North Ipswich may have been an 'across the end of the tracks' job as well. It certainly was not located with any thought toward extension toward Brisbane, as shown by its abandonment and rerouting of the line by the 1870s.

Cleveland I can understand, as any extension to Redland Bay is highly unlikely, and would be far too circuitous to be sensible.  Ferny Grove on the other had is just plain dumb, I am convinced that there will be trains to Samford again one day, even if it is 30 years away.

We sure are fast learners in QLD.  :-r

QuoteMr Benstead says the investigation will be wide reaching and will include reports of other trains with rumored breaking issues this morning and reports the stricken locomotive failed to stop at some stations earlier along its route.

Queensland Rail are now concentrating on removing the train, which ploughed 10 metres inside the recently revamped station, demolishing the men's bathroom and badly damaging the women's.

The recovery is expected to take several hours and will not be completed before midnight.

Disagree, the gradients would be too steep IMO.

Also, Samford is a clear case of people moving out there because they wanted the big blocks and country lifestyle, and doesn't have a strong town centre to speak of. Don't understand why you would expend the money there.

Samford line would perform as badly as the Hurstbridge line in Melbourne.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Scott Emerson

Rail incident to be investigated

The Queensland Government's rail safety regulator will oversee an investigation into the train incident at Cleveland Station today.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said that at 9.40am a passenger train hit Cleveland Station, but thankfully no one was seriously injured.

"There were 19 passengers and staff assessed by Queensland Ambulance Service and we are lucky people escaped with only minor injuries given the severity of the incident," Mr Emerson said.

"Queensland Rail advised the train carriages received their last full inspection on January 9 and no issues were reported at other stations during the trip from Doomben prior to this incident.

"While it is too early to speculate on the cause of the incident Queensland Rail and Queensland Police Service will commence their investigation.

"The safety of our passengers is our first priority and once an investigation is finalised a report will be presented detailing any safety issues identified."

Mr Emerson said the repair process has already begun, with crews onsite working on the overhead lines and the recovery of the train is underway.

"Around 300 metres of overhead power lines have been damaged, resulting in disruptions to commuters," he said.

"This is a busy station with more than 1200 passengers using it each day so while we are unable to use the station buses will replace trains between Cleveland and Wellington Point.

"We urge all passengers who use this line to allow extra time when travelling and to expect delays of up to 30 minutes."

Passengers should check the TransLink website at www.translink.com.au or phone 13 12 30 to get the latest update.

Suggest we take this to another thread if we continue this, however here's my quick response.

Disagree with the gradient issue,  max gradient across Camp Mountain was 1 in 50 with quite a bit of 1 in 66 as well, no worse than the rest of the Ferny Grove line.  Accident site was 1 in 50.  Mitchelton to Oxford Park is steeper.  A modern rebuild would do better while still retaining many features of the original route, think Lota to Cleveland for a comparable example.

Regarding whether the line is worthwhile, I completely agree with your comparison with Hurstbridge, and certainly with the current development style out there it is not worth doing.  However if Samford area continues to develop and the sprawl does spread out there with higher density around Samford, the line may again be needed. Even now the Samford area population of over 3000 is double that of Rosewood (2006 census), to which we do run trains. I think we'd be nuts not to at least consider the possibility even though I rate it as a low chance of happening any time soon. Longer term, I am not so sure.  Even now a lot of the cars parking at FG come from further out - a clear case for a decent Samford to FG feeder bus I think.
