Although some thought that people would be too afraid to travel underground, the first line, the Metropolitan, which went between the overground stations at Paddington and Farringdon, was successful from the very first day.

The London Underground, which grew out of Victorian imagination and inventiveness, went on to shape the physical layout of the city. Commonly known as the Tube, the network is now essential to the social and economic life of London. Today, despite delays, overcrowding and lack of air conditioning, the Tube carries over one billion passengers a year and its map and 'roundel' logo are instantly recognisable.
