Hi All,

Yesterday, I wrote on Queensland Rail's Facebook Page that in the last 10-15 years reliability has fallen across the railway network and that we've got a bit of a journey back to the glory days. Queensland Rail denies this saying that service quality and reliability are now better than ever using an independent audit report based on just three years of data.

Does anyone have:
- On-Time Running Figures for 2002-2007?
- Gross tonnage per thousand kilometres
- Number of Signal and/or Track Faults
- Number of kilometres of railway track

I think that's all I need? Is there something else I should include in my comparison?

Thanks,
Mick

Their idea of quality and ours are different. If you can find old timetables you can work out the percent extra service and also line speeds. I reckon that most lines are slower. the on time statistic has been fiddled with over the years.

That's very true. Thinking about it more, line speed and timetable adjustments have been made over the years to improve on-time running and operational efficiencies. It is going to be difficult to compare with so many variables.

The number of signal and track faults should be easier to compare though, I think.

G'day Mick,

A noble quest you are on.  Changes in safe working practices are probably also a consideration.

Some figures are here --> http://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=2002.0  but not all you need unfortunately.

Hope that of some assistance, will see if I can dig up some other stuff ..

Cheers
Bob

Peak frequencies are higher now than yester-year, so there is obviously an increases risk of "knock on effect" late running in the modern timetables. For example the stage 1 timetable increased am peak frequencies by more than 20% on the mains.
