Here we go again, another year another weekend without trains on the Ipswich line.
My family will not travel to Brisbane at any time because of the prohibitive cost, but a long weekend, with many attractions in Brisbane, would be a good incentive. How many more Q.R? Anzac Day, Easter, Ipswch Cup Day[again] Get your act together or move over and let someone in who can eliminate this ongoing problem.

IPSWICH commuters face public transport delays over the Australia Day weekend with the Ipswich line closed for maintenance.

While the rest of the Translink network will run as normal, Ipswich line commuters face catching replacement bus services if they want to take part in festivities in Ipswich or Brisbane.

It is one of nine weekend closures between Christmas and August planned to increase reliability and on-time running performance.

A Queensland Rail representative said the three-day closure was needed to undertake significant upgrade and maintenance works.

The works include laying 1.6km of new track; replacing about 5000 timber sleepers and expired ballast along 500m of track and bridge maintenance and reliability inspections.

"These works are necessary to ensure the safety of our customers and employees and will increase the on-time running, reliability and safety of the City network," the representative said.

Public Transport advocacy group Rail Back on Track spokesman Robert Dow said the extra delays in travel with bus replacement services may persuade potential patrons to stay home.

"It's the Australia Day weekend and some people would want to go into the CBD and Ipswich," he said.

"During track closures the number of people does seem to be significantly decreased. There are issues with the go card and getting on the buses."

Ipswich Turf Club general manager Brett Kitching said while the works were inconvenient it was also necessary. He said around 10% of race day patrons were expected to make their way to the track by public transport.

"They are always inconvenient, especially if there is a major event on over that weekend," he said.

"In the last four years there have been line closures on Ipswich Show day and Ipswich Cup."

Replacement bus services organised by Translink run as close as possible to the timetabled train times.

Translink recommends commuters add an hour to travel time to ensure they arrive on time. Each timetabled train is replaced by multiple buses.
