Couriermail --> Cable car to link Brisbane's CBD with South Bank under $1.3bn hotel casino plan

QuoteA GIANT cable car linking Brisbane's central business district with South Bank would form the centrepiece of a new $1.3 billion proposal by gaming group Echo Entertainment to build a 1000 room hotel, retail and casino complex in the city ...

Since when was it the responsibility of private casino operators to fund BUZes?

Exactly. This proposal is in the same category as the Jupiter's Casino Monorail on the Gold Coast.  Part of a tourist attraction, privately funded, and nothing to do with the public transport system.

We need to stop viewing everything through our "single issue pressure group" filter. The world is bigger & more complex than that.

I'd perfer to see that dragon rollercoaster that used to be in the myer centre as a river crossing. I'd happily pay $5 to cross the river every time :P

Sounds like a pretty good idea tbh. It would also be interesting to see the planed layout. If it gets off the ground I hope they don't go down a similar path to what the ferris wheel operators at SouthBank did.

The cable car will be touted as an 'innovative Public-Private Partership' that 'creatively uses new technologies to better link Southbank and the City', built at no cost to government. In effect, it will be a concession to a single operator (Echo).  Cost structure would be along these lines - casino high rollers would travel for free, free also to those guests who book into the casino accommodation, with the costs incurred being subsidised by mums, dads and kids who use it.  Likely cost would be the same as train travel between City and Toombul, yet distanced travelled will be less than a kilometre.

I would like to see a study into the impact of this cable car on free cross-river ferries, or will they be withdrawn quietly to allow private sector involvement?

I was kind of hoping the Sydney Mono Rail might have found a new home ...   :P

The burning question punters have of course is " Will we be able to use our go cards on the cable car?  "  ....   :P :o

Innovative like Clem 7 and AirportLink.

Sorry but I think this idea is built to fail on purpose and the reason why it forms part of the proposal is to generate publicity. What will the frequency be? Given that buses are every few seconds between CBD locations and South Bank I doubt the patronage would have much impact.

Tramtrain, get it through your head, its a tourist cablecar, not a PT cablecar. You ride it to get a nice view, not because you are going somewhere.
And its a private company paying for it, not the government.

Did you even read the article.
Oh wait, you magically never read stuff if it gives you an excuse to rant.  ::)

Don't flatter yourself.
The proposal is a cr*ck and I doubt it will ever be built. They would have more success putting said facilities at Mt Coo-tha with cable car there IMHO. At least you can see something...

Well true, but at the same time.

-Why bring up the Bulimba BUZ?
-Why say that a casino operator should fund said BUZ?
-Why bring up the frequency ofa cable car (It's a bit like saying what is the 'frequency' of Skyrail Cairns, or the 'frequency' of the Wheel of Brisbane, or the 'frequency' of the Tower of Terror at Dreamworld)

You've yet to explain how either of those points you made had any relevance to a proposal for some tourist trap attached to a casino?

If any cable car/gondala should be built best be from the base of Mt Cootha at the Botanical Gardens to the lookout. I thought the Newman councilor now premier was always keen on a bus tunnel under Adelaide St to South bank to alleviate conjestion!???

nathandavid88

Personally, I like the idea of a cable car over the river! It would be a cool novelty and could give a nice view of the South Bank precinct (depending on alignment of course). I'd pay to go for the ride, and I imagine a fair few tourists would as well, simply for the novelty value. If Echo want to legitimately pursue one, good luck to them!

SurfRail

Might even be worth including on the map, like the Emirates Airline in London.
