Eight Mile plains busway station this morning. The lift appears to be online, and as my knee is still playing up somewhat I decided to use it rather than climbing the stairs

Pressed the button, doors open. Hit button for concourse level.

The doors closed, then the lift shuddered and made a horrible grinding noise, refusing to go anywhere.  After about 30 seconds the doors opened and I got out and used the stairs.

The now empty lift then decided to close the doors & go, and beat me to the top.

Quotethese lifts are like so many QR projects carried out on the one buttock principle, do it on the cheap and hope it works long enough for the commissioning and looks pretty rather than be functional and reliable, and yes all equipment requires maintenance and yes there will always be mechanical failures but the scheduled maintenance can be carried out overnight instead of during the day when it is required to be avaliable for use....

Oh give it a rest would you. If they are so poorly designed you can only blame the state government for lack of funding.

If someone is truly dependant on using the elevators then they should be checking the stations that they'll be attending prior. Heaven forbid should they be going to a station without elevators such as Strathpine or how they got to the station in the first place. If there is a/all elevators out of service sometimes QR staff can arrange for alternate transport. Or they can apply to translink for reimbursement eg such as a taxi to the next station for those futher out along the network. There is also the option to go to the next station and then backtrack for those with the frequency. Its not ideal but its also not the end of the world having the elevator not working for a day or two.

The lift at Goodna was out for 8 months post the 2011 swim.  No worries, we are patient ...  been good of late though.  Seems the parties in it are not as frequent ...  :P

I have suggested to TL that they make a little lift outage list.  Would help folks who need too, be able to check a bit quicker and more easily than in the general service update list.

What exactly in my anecdote about weird lift behaviour deserves this response?

I'm assuming he was aiming that at mufreight, not you.
There is no silver bullet... but there is silver buckshot.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Sorry Colin, it wasn't aimed at you ;) Added quotes to remove any confusion.

I agree.

Look at the strata fees of any unit block with lifts compared to one without.  I know which one I'd rather pay.  I've certainly seen lifts require maintenance frequently when I worked on the top floor of an office building.

Obviously you are not one of those unfortunate enough to need to avail yourself of a lift, as for laying the blame for this pathetic reliability of the lifts yes blame it on the government by all means, lifts like much other infrastructure has been done on the cheap leaving a very costly legacy to maintain it in service, perhaps the same argument will be able to be applied to other infrastructure and equipment now being supplied to Queensland Rail.
Hopefully we will not see this approach with the next generation of rollingstock where the maintenance costs blow the budget with reliability and safety sacrificed.

No worries, sorry hadn't read the previous post to realise the context.

I am wondering if the recent bad weather has damaged the lifts at Eight Mile Plains.  They have been very reliable for the last year or so, but after the recent weather event have been in & out of service ever since. (Nearly said "up & down" ever since ;) )

At my "home" rail station - Kuraby - lift availability doesn't seem to be a major problem.  Can't remember ever seeing them out of service other than what appeared to be scheduled maintenance. Not a particularly high use station 'though.

Never seen the lifts out of service at my home station which is Strathpine......  :hg :hg

Mufreight, even if I had to use an elevator I can't as my local station doesn't have them. I understand some people have to use the lifts but people shouldn't have the expectation that everywhere and everything will be open, working and catered for them 100% of the time. Most people can simply change plans on the fly without any problem but if you have specific needs such as using an elevator on the public transport network they could make a quick phone call or simply check a website just to confirm there won't be any problems or issues. If they don't check due to the rare times they are out of service/don't know/can't change to an alternative travel plan Translink and QR have procedures in place to help miminise any discomfort/disruption that the public may have with the elevators being out of service (either from maintainence, damage/vandalism, breakdowns etc) such as offering taxi's to the next station, providing reimbursements for taxi travel, offering other methods of travel and so on. Pretty sure BCC/Translink still offer bookings for a full DDA compliant bus by request for passengers that require wheelchair access. Most of the fleet is DDA compliant but if someone wants to make sure then they have that service which is available to be utilised. Greyhound offers a similar service too. DDA busses, taxis, minivans etc can also be requested during track closures and bus station closures. Under different circumstances the same applies to other people with specific diets, specific medical conditions, specific activities and even to trying to buy a specific item etc.

I'm not having a go at anyone that requires access to them but if it's something that specific they could do a quick check just to minimise any potential distruptions that they might experience during that rare and small amount of time that the elevators are out of service. Translink updates aren't perfect but the link SR provided is something that Translink could learn/copy from/provide.

Schindler were on site at Eight Mile Plains yesterday, and the lifts are once again working properly. Seems to have been a fairly quick response to that problem.

What is the average duration of a lift outage?  This can become a real problem if use of the lift is the only means of access to isolated platforms, or to get from one side of the station to the other for access to the wider suburb or town.  I have heard that four days without an operational lift is not uncommon.

ozbob

Worst was Goodna post 2011 ' swimming lessons '  was about 6 months..
This was due to the required parts to repair the lift were in short supply from the overseas supplier.  Hope the rain ☔ stops.

Toombul station now has both platform lifts out of order...confirmed by two on facebook.

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1932774320074252.1073741905.139321872752848&type=3&comment_id=1933548489996835&comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R%22%7D

translink only have platform one listed on their website.

They need to get repairs sorted pronto as Toombul is a major bus-rail interchange.

Golliwog

Any one know how long the lift has been out of order at Roma St busway platform 1? Or when it'll be fixed?

Because there's no other wheelchair access to that platform the interim solution seems to be borrowing 2 of QR's wheelchair ramps (1 for each platform) to get the wheel chair down onto the busway itself and employing a traffic controller to stop traffic to give access via the lift on platform 2. I mean, it works but I can't imagine having traffic control there all day would be cheap.

The thing I've noticed with lifts in my time in building management is, when say Otis looks after an Otis lift, repair time frames are reasonable.

As soon as another company or a private repairer starts looking after a lift, repair time frames blow out. Like the original manufacturer prioritises their own maintenance contracts.

Lift is also out of order at KGSBS platform 2 Adelaide St end as well as the escalator at Roma St end.
7 years at Bayside Buses
33 years at Transport for Brisbane
Retired and got bored.
1 year at Town and Country Coaches and having a ball !

Add the escalator outages about the place as well.
