A suggestion has been made for free travel for children 5-15 years, accompanying an adult on weekends/holidays.  NSW has this in part (see Family Fare Deal http://www.131500.com.au/tickets/concessions ).

The adult would need to meet normal ticketing requirements, go card or paper whilst we have it.  Adult could be on free travel after nine journeys, allowed.

Children aged four years and under travel for free already. http://translink.com.au/travel-information/how-to/how-to-travel-with-children-prams-or-large-items

Yes for children. Aged 5-15 no - Maybe 8... 10 max. Discounts for older children yes.

Kind of agree, but how do you then give them the discount for the older children? Can't guarantee they'll be on a bus or at a manned station.

Discounts for older children could be in the form of a family type gocard.

What is the purpose of this policy?
To make it cheaper (and therefore easier) for families to use public transport to go out as a group to the city/movies/etc.

I don't know if needing a second go card would go down well. Perhaps some way of linking the accounts online and then if the system can handle it can recognize that two linked cards touched on within a minute or two of each other and charge less, or one a week the system can check for touches that occurred within a few minutes of each other and give the discount back as a small refund.

Yes the suggestion is to just keep it simple.  Adult takes children on public transport free, he or she (adult) normal ticketing requirements.

I am certain that if such a ticketing policy was in place 'family' groups would use public transport a lot more on weekends/holidays.
