Interesting how many see this as a need to build more limited access and thus almost 100% infexible road network.  To me is shows just how bad a transport option they are. If a tunnel had closed and the feeders roads were normal access roads the traffic world have dispersed slowly and found alternative routes. Yes there would have still beeen traffic jams but the system would have cleared quicker.

^Agreed, and the comments by the transport minister that a second link (East West Link) would have helped is BS.
For starters, that road would have its own peak hour loads filling it up (Or maybe it won't, if other tunnel project usage rates are anything to go by) so it wouldn't be able to deal with all the monash traffic suddenly wanting to use it.

Secondly, if someone was down on the monash and had to get off because of the problem, its going to be a slow and congested run to try and get off that freeway, go 3.6km north, and join onto the Eastern Freeway and the E-W Link.

A little out there but other tunnel operator is likely to be same and chance is both are down.. A stretch but possible!
