Residents of Brisbane's inner city suburbs are ditching the traffic for a car-free lifestyle, according to the latest census data.

One in eight (12.5 per cent) inner-city households is living without a car and commuting using public and active transport, well above the city-wide average of 9.5per cent or one in 10households.

Among the top car-free suburbs are Bowen Hills (26.4 per cent) and Kelvin Grove (20.2 per cent), where high-frequency public transport is available and high-density living is prevalent.

Grange residents seem to be the most dependent on cars, with 57.6 per cent of households owning two or more vehicles.

Kelvin Grove QUT Professor Simon Washington said the trend of inner-city residents living without a car was a world-wide one.

"The return to urban living comes after people have become fed up with the long commute from the suburbs,'' Prof Washington said.

"Our research shows that people already have a set of preferences about how they want to live and they seek to move to a location that will support that.''

Brisbane City Council's public and active transport chairman Peter Matic said the inner northern suburbs had benefited in recent years from investment in public and active transport including the CityGlider, the Northshore Hamilton CityCat stop and the area's express CityCat services.

"I think it's fantastic that so many people are now able to get around Brisbane without a car thanks our delivery of 500 new buses, 11 new ferries and $100 million worth of new bikeways in the last four years,'' Cr Matic said.

Still think they are in competition with the rest of the public transport network ....   ::)

Oh don't be silly. That isn't true. We all know those 500 new buses include feeding taigum with nice air conditioned air on the 328, the new 329, the high weekend frequency 338, no two hour services operate in Chermside during the week. The new 335 providing extra services on the Shorncliffe railway line or the Sunday 326/327 routes that get people from Bracken Ridge-Sandgate. I love getting on that 7am 310 bus out to Sandgate on a Sunday morning...... waaaaaait a minute.... there are no Sunday 326/327 routes. 338 is every 2 hours on a weekend. The 329 only goes in one direction during the peak hour. There are no 310 services that run that early on a Sunday. There are 3x 2hour frequency routes in Chermside. Why don't people in Sandgate get the half hourly train to Boondall then jump on the hourly 335 at the station. Something is a miss here :hg :hg :hg
