Sunshine Express Rail Tours invites you to travel on a tour to Cooroy with historic diesel locomotive 1620 on the Saturday 20th October 2012. This will be a rare opportunity to ride in the heritage wooden carriages, listening to the unique sounds of QR's last "pommy diesel" as it negotiates the hills and twists and turns of the scenic North Coast Line. Our train will depart from Roma Street and will stop to pick up passengers at Northgate, Lawnton and Caboolture.

The train journey to the North Coast is always popular. After leaving suburbia behind the train passes the spectacular Glass House Mountains and travels through pineapple plantations, citrus orchards as well as areas of virgin scrub and rain forest in Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Our tour will terminate at the bustling township of Cooroy where lunch, which is included in your fare, will be served at the Cooroy RSL Club, adjacent to the railway station.

I expect the old triangles in various places around SEQ like Yandina, Thorneside and Shorncliffe aren't going anywhere.

With all of our other problems, we can at least count our blessings that we have a strong, public supported heritage steam and diesel scene which is still largely about mainline running.

One day we will probably need to preserve a 3900 and one of the early EMUs - "Queensland Electric Train Society" or some such.

:-t  Oh yeah!

3900 with SX carriages.  Just magic!

And I'd like to nominate for preservation: EMU01, with green & blue seat fabric, and a blue QR front end. Much like the one in my avatar.  Also one of the later EMUs with fluted stainless steel over the windows, rather than the flat stainless steel over the windows that is on the first few EMUs.

Is the point where I point out that the proposed timetable of this now very old rollingstock is only a few minutes slower than the afternoon RTT!

Highest average speed out of Brisbane over the first 120km is still the Westlander to Helidon, although it obviously goes a bit pear shaped when it has to do the next 40km to Toowoomba.  If we ever spark the line to Gatton or Helidon it will outperform all other lines, particularly if Grandchester to Laidley gets a tunnel.

If you could find a few hundred $k, I'm sure QR would probably give you a 3900 now. But yes I would like to join such a group, perhaps its about time to start looking at forming a group or branch of another existing group to enable memberships to start building up to fund said EMU 01 and 3900 when time comes. Realistically though any EMU aquired will be fitted out with modern stuff and I doubt funds would be available to convert back in a hurry. I'd also recommend a 60's series EMU. This way you have a 6 car set and what not to do when buying trains.

I was considering that, but on further thought, given the size of Queensland and how things have gone historically, I have this suspicion that the government might actually hang onto some for heritage purposes.

Ideally I'd like to see EMU 01 (for being the class leader) and EMU 60 (for being unique given it contains part of EMU05 and is one of the 60-series ones).  You would just keep them permanently lashed up.
