Planning for new CityCat terminal launched

QuotePlanning for new CityCat terminal launched

Planning work on Brisbane's $5 million CityCat stop at Park Road Milton gets underway today, with Lord Mayor Graham Quirk launching a two-week geotechnical survey set to determine the terminal's exact location.

The survey will investigate the riverbed and is necessary to ensure the structure is built to cope with currents and flood events, with the findings pinpointing where council will put the pylons used to secure the pontoon.

Public and Active Transport chairman Peter Matic, who leads the project, said the community would be invited to comment on a series of preliminary concept designs due for early 2013.

But it is expected the terminal will be based on the designs Brisbane's Cox Rayner Architects used for other recent additions to the CityCat network.

"[Consultation] will enable Council to come up with a balanced design and plan for the ferry terminal that ensures accessibility and meets current and future community needs, and I encourage community members to share their feedback," Cr Matic said.

Cr Quirk said the new CityCat stop was a logical addition the ferry network and brought with it numerous economic benefits.

"It will open up Suncorp Stadium and the iconic Park Road dining precinct to Brisbane's river suburbs," he said.

"The Park Road terminal will reduce congestion on our roads and stimulate the local economy, making the inner-city hub of Milton and surrounding suburbs more accessible and more attractive to live, work and do business"

The geotechnical investigation involves a barge, measuring 35 metres long and 13 metres wide, which will collect soil samples and act as a barrier to the fast-moving river so that drilling machinery is protected and stable.

Cr Matic said the survey was fundamental to planning where the terminal should be located, from aesthetic, safety and flood resilient perspectives.

"It is great to see this preliminary work underway to open up another suburb to the Brisbane CityCat network, as part of the Lord Mayor's record public transport investment in both ferries and terminals for our city," Cr Matic said.

Plans for the Milton stop were flagged as early as 2008 under then Lord Mayor Campbell Newman who called for expressions of interest across a range of sites.

Two of those sites were announced in 2010, seeing stops added at Northshore Hamilton and Teneriffe.

But the 2011 flood caused significant damage to the network, resulting in the installation of temporary structures at several terminals and a fast-track of plans for the West End upgrade.

In a deal struck between the state and federal governments, council was awarded $145 million to replace the city's ferry and CityCat terminals.

In addition to the $5 million going into the Milton terminal $59 million remains in the ferry terminals flood recovery budget, with work due to be completed by the end of 2013-14.

Construction of the Park Road is expected to commence early next year.

Fine form from TransLink as usual: the new ferry terminal is not on Google Maps.

Caught the citycat milton to south bank yesterday, takes similar time to bus (453 etc QSBS services) and considering the frequent traffic congestion inbound during peak ill be using it more often.
