Minister for Police and Community Safety
The Honourable Jack Dempsey
12/08/2012

Safety campaigns for rail platforms and crossings

Police Minister Jack Dempsey has urged Queenslanders to take care when
on railway platforms, pedestrian railway crossings and level crossings.

Mr Dempsey's warning was part of a national campaign for Rail Safety
Week.

Queensland Police Service (QPS) officers will be monitoring driver and
pedestrian behaviour around level crossings and platforms as a part of
Rail Safety Week from 13 August to 19 August 2012.

"The speed at which trains travel can make platforms and railway
crossings dangerous places which is why every Queenslander needs to
behave with safety in mind when near a rail line," Mr Dempsey said.

"Pedestrians and motorists should obey all signs and signals, only cross
at marked crossings when safe to do so and ensure they do not block the
rail line.

"During Rail Safety Week, police officers will be ensuring pedestrians
and drivers are obeying all rail signals and signs."

Chief Superintendent Bob Gee, from the State Traffic Support Branch,
said officers around the state would be supporting this important
initiative in order to raise awareness of the dangers that motorists and
pedestrians face.

"Supporting Rail Safety Week is directly in line with our role in
keeping the community safe by enforcing laws that are there to protect
motorists, pedestrians, train drivers and commuters."

Police in all parts of the state will be participating in Rail Safety
Week, focusing on level crossings where crashes and near misses have
been recorded, and on railway station platforms.
