Roma St-Corinda, Y'Pilly & Murarrie track closure

Last updated: 4.35pm Monday 20 August 2012

From 11pm Friday 24 August to the last train on Sunday 26 August, tracks will be closed from Roma Street to Corinda, Yeerongpilly and Murarrie.

Be sure to plan your journey in advance and allow for extra travel time due to track works (approximately 60 minutes).

Services will be affected from approximately 10.30pm Friday 24 August.

Services will return to normal on Monday 27 August.

The first train services to be affected by this closure are:
Richlands line

    10.48pm service departing Richlands station will terminate at Corinda at 10.58pm.  Buses will transport customers to the city.
    10.37pm service departing Bowen Hills will be replaced by buses to Richlands.

Ipswich line

    10.07pm service departing Ipswich station will terminate at Corinda at 10.43pm. Buses will transport customers to the city.
    10.28pm service departing Central station will be replaced by buses to connect with train services at Corinda.

Cleveland line

    10.22pm service departing Cleveland station will terminate at Murarrie at 10.58pm. Buses will transport customers to the city.
    10.45pm service departing Central Station will be replaced by buses to connect with train services at Murarrie station.

Beenleigh line

    10.59pm service departing Beenleigh will terminate at Yeerongpilly station at 11.10pm. Buses will transport customers to the city.
    11.01pm service departing Central station will be replaced by buses to connect with train services at Yeerongpilly station.

Gold Coast line

    9.48pm service departing Varsity Lakes will terminate at Yeerongpilly at 10.53pm. Buses will transport customers to the city.
    11.22pm service departing Central station will be replaced by buses to connect with train services at Yeerongpilly station.

Bus replacement services

Buses will replace trains in both directions from Roma Street to Corinda, Yeerongpilly and Murarrie.
Ipswich/Rosewood line

    Trains will operate between Ipswich/Rosewood and Corinda.  Buses will operate for customers wanting stations between Corinda and city stations.

Richlands line

    No trains will operate between Richlands and Darra (buses will operate between Richlands and city). Train services will still operate between Darra and Corinda.

Beenleigh/Gold Coast line

    Trains will operate between Beenleigh and Varsity Lakes and Yeerongpilly.  Buses will replace trains from Yeerongpilly to city stations.

Cleveland line

    Trains will operate between Cleveland and Murarrie.  Buses will replace trains between Murarrie and city stations.

Coorparoo station will be completely closed for the duration of this track closure

Cavendish Road level crossing at Coorparoo will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians during this track closure.

Why can't they close them on different weekends and use the Tennyson loop?

Again. They can't. The Roma Street feeder effects all lines if they need to conduct feeder works or overhead work in that small corridor which as I understand is happening.

I thought the Milton and South Brisbane legs had their own feeders?  Or is there a single point of failure here?

I'm confused.  If there are Toowong and Park Road feeders what is a Roma St feeder used/needed for?

Sorry, still confused.  The city clearly isn't being taken down as that would prevent trains reaching Roma St station.  I'd be very surprised if there was a unique section from the Merivale tunnel to the end of the Roma St platforms - that's only about 200m.

IIRC the inner city (Roma Street-Bowen Hills) has 2 feeders due to the amount of train movements/available paths/backup power and signaling spacing (shoving more trains into a smaller area compared to futher out). Its a weekend, there's no peak hour demand and the lines to the South and West are out of action feeding into Roma Street so it can cope on one feeder. When there is a major fault relating to overheads it also limits the amount of train paths and train movements which is why peak hour can sometimes be crazy trying to find a train when a feeder has to be turned off.

The RS feeder would be off turned off and the overheads would be grounded towards the platform ends (usually the blue cables dangling from the overheads).

Hmm, I'd have thought having two feeders live concurrently would be a problem with an AC system due to phasing.  Maybe one is redundant for the other, or perhaps newer tech has resolved that problem.

I still don't see why you wouldn't close down via Sth Bris and via Milton on different weekends.  As you say, there is limited amount of train paths on the weekend (i.e. less than half of peak) and one feeder ought to cope.

Not if the overheads are isolated which is what will be happening. From the platform end of Roma Street to the nutural sections there will be no power at all. Meaning no electric trains will be running through there.

So there is indeed some way of isolating the wires in between the platform ends and the neutral sections - I suppose it doesn't necessarily need a neutral section if in normal service it would be connected to the city feeder(s).

Shouldn't there be a way of doing it for either the mains or the suburbans, rather than needing to do both?  Or perhaps that would be unsafe.

I don't know the specifics of how they go about it between the subs and mains but they've been isolating sections for donkey years :P

So you believe this particular pattern of closure has been going on for ages?  Ozbob couldn't remember, and neither could I.

It's not a simple job like flicking a switch or left clicking on a button. Its manual meaning workers have to phisically ground the overheads. It does take a fair amount of time to undertake. Heck, Queensland Rail even charges people to isolate areas such as level crossings for overdimensional loads.

Hmm, so there is a procedure for isolating a level crossing without turning off the entire section?  I wonder how that could even be done.

Re-reading this thread, it's still unclear why they can't isolate the subs and mains on different weekends.  Insufficient clearance?  Zero (c)harm?

I can only guess they can't be bothered.

Work often proceeds on the mains/subs whilst the opposite continue in operation at other times.

Again, this closure is another massive inconvenience ...

Could be because of the Roma St feeder works, but the whole thing has minimal redundancy anyway as I understand it (evidence  wipeouts earlier this year).  Again all done on the cheap in the half baked fashion we all know so well.

For the entire time of my childhood youth in Melbourne I cannot recall one track closure ...

Might have happened but can't recall any. 

Maybe because of the local signal control (signal boxes) and so forth trains still ran despite works etc.  No sparks steam/diesel ..
