"Buses and trains, which run under the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, were also likely to be impacted"

I don't like the sound of that...

It's likely buses will be diverted over the CCB during the days that all Leaders are attending the Convention Centre.

It's not the bus network I'd be worried about, it's the rail network. It is going to screech to a halt during G20. Both Central and South Brisbane stations will be closed thanks to exclusion zones. In terms of disruptions, I think the 2014 G20 will actually end up being more disruptive than the 2011 floods to the Brisbane area (within BCC's boundaries). It really does say a lot, doesn't it?
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

aldonius

I can't possibly see how the sheer level of disruption won't have substantial (if Brisbane-localised) effects on the next state election. Together with the general, expected, receding tide of LNP support, a couple of percentage points from G20 might well make the difference. Good thing for Newman that Ashgrove's on the northside.

ozbob

Couriermail --> World leaders will have to share as security and five-star hotels limit accommodation in fortress Brisbane during next year's G20 summit

According to this article yet to be finally determined if Central will be closed.  There will be a public holiday, however it will be very disruptive, and not all will be happy.

I don't see how we can blame the LNP for this mess at all. It was Julia Gillard who brought this thing up here in an attempt to gain votes in Queensland.

If it is within 1-2 months of the election, it may have some impact, but I doubt Newman will send Queensland to the polls in 2014.

Sure, but Gillard is out of politics now, and the feelings that this sort of thing provokes are against the government of the day, which will still be the LNP.

Concur that it'll be a 2015 election. Presumably March or so. Yeah, fair enough, effects won't be that strong. Still might be 'enough' in a couple of electorates. Guess we'll find out.

Brisbanetimes --> Brisbane G20 summit: inside the security zone

Quote... Public transport into the city will be affected, particularly from the south side of the Brisbane River.

The Gold Coast and Cleveland train lines - which run adjacent to the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre and the Southeast Busway - will both be closed to passenger traffic for the duration of the leaders' meeting, with buses taking passengers on a detour around the venue from train stations either side of South Brisbane station ...

Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services
The Honourable Jack Dempsey

Online portal to provide G20 updates

Queenslanders can now access everything they need to know about the G20 after a dedicated blog was launched this morning.

Police, Fire and Emergency Services Minister Jack Dempsey said the G20 blog would be part of the myPolice online portal, allowing G20 Group organisers to communicate directly with the public.

"I know a lot of Queenslanders have many questions about how the G20 events may affect them and this blog provides a place for police to provide all the information people may be looking for," Mr Dempsey said.

"The G20 group has been doing a fantastic job already talking to businesses and people who will be affected and the Newman Government wants to ensure everyone knows what will be happening in their area.

"The G20 meetings will put Queensland on the world stage and show that this is a great state to live, work and visit.

"The QPS is also working to ensure a balance between protecting the 30 world leaders who will attend the event and ensuring members of the public are able to go about their daily business in a safe and secure environment."

Assistant Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the blog would greatly assist the QPS to give members of the public vital information in the lead-up to and during the G20 events in Queensland.

"The myPolice blog will be used as a part of our external engagement process, to inform members of the public about impacts around the G20 Finance Ministers' Meeting in Cairns, and the Leaders' Summit in Brisbane," Assistant Commissioner Carroll said.

"Our officers are already out and about meeting with business owners, community groups and residents about the possible impacts around Brisbane.

"The blog is another tool for us to utilise to ensure that people are well informed about any impacts that may arise.

"It is important for us to ensure people have accurate and timely information, allow two-way communication with the public, and allow us to answer frequently asked questions quickly."

JOINT STATEMENT
Premier
The Honourable Campbell Newman

Minister for Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts
The Honourable Ian Walker

Sunday, April 06, 2014

Queensland hosts a G20 party for all nations

Planning is underway for the biggest party Brisbane has seen since World Expo 88 in the three weeks leading up to the G20 Summit in November.

Premier Campbell Newman said the State Government was organising the event to take advantage of the tremendous economic and tourism benefits that will come to Queensland through the G20 events.

"We're putting on the biggest party since Expo to showcase our amazing state not only to the world's media, CEOs and leaders, but to the very people who call this great state home as well," Mr Newman said.

"The Commonwealth Games in 1982 and World Expo 88 have both shaped Brisbane and the G20 this year will be another defining moment of our history.

"It's an investment that will boost our state's economy through full hotels, bars and restaurants and most importantly the positive word of mouth spread right around the globe."

"This is our chance to say we live in a place where we know how to have fun, we're embracing cutting edge technology and we're genuinely a new world city."

Arts Minister Ian Walker said the city and surrounding suburbs would come alive for the world-class celebration of arts, cultural and sporting events.

"Delivering this giant party will be a way to show the world that we are ready for the G20 summit and to show some of the great arts and culture that we have in Queensland," Mr Walker said.

"The name of the event will be decided in the coming weeks and is likely to encompass many different things, including music programs in local parks and pubs, street performers and world dance parties in nightclubs throughout the city and Fortitude Valley.

"There's a great outdoor events component that will happen all over the city, not just in the CBD but throughout the suburbs as well.

"A multi-cultural arts program will reflect Brisbane's role as the world's host to the G20.

"We also anticipate an event that will allow Cairns residents to celebrate ahead of the Finance Ministers' Meeting in September."

Mr Walker said the event would be programmed by Jono Perry, who had produced the annual Riverfire and Santos City of Lights for the last three years, and Athol Young who has more than 20 years of experience in arts and cultural management roles in Queensland.

I'm sure Putin is shaking in his boots about the threat to not visit South Bank and have to pay for his own Koala photo at Lone Pine.

BTW, it's spelt Russia.

I think there's value in an MR regarding frequent crosstown routes, linking in to G20 city centre disruption. The phrasing isn't really forthcoming right now, but I'll see what I can come up with...

Frequent cross-town routes? Please aldonius, don't be silly. Nobody travels cross-town on Sundays and public holidays (i.e. the Friday and Sunday of G20). Just ask Brisbane City Council. The 598/599 don't operate on Sundays, nor does the 104, nor do many local feeders. In fact the only real cross-town routes to operate with any reasonable frequency are the 369 and 590, and they're only half-hourly.

James, depending on his exam timetable, is strongly considering leaving Brisbane for the G20. As far as I'm concerned, all the world's leaders and their entourages can go have a stupid damn talkfest somewhere else. Skype was invented for a reason.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?
