King George Square, Post Office Square and a host of suburban parks have free wireless internet available from today as lord mayor Graham Quirk sent stage two of his Wi-Fi hotspots rollout live.

Announced as part of last year's budget, the $2 million project is an extension of a 2010 trial that saw the service rolled out at New Farm Park and the City Botanic Gardens.

Cr Quirk said nearly 10,000 people had logged on at those sites since October last year, with a further 18,000 people logging on each month to use council's library Wi-Fi services.

"This service is part of the new world city focus that we have, where residents and visitors can access services on par with what is available in cities across the globe," he said.

"Users will be able to surf the web or check emails while enjoying some of Brisbane's best green spaces."

But opposition leader Milton Dick said the rollout was an example of a disconnection between spending from city hall and the "real issues" facing people in Brisbane.

"Installing free Wi-Fi in Brisbane parks will do nothing to ease cost-of-living pressures for Brisbane families," Cr Dick said.

"Children can't travel to one of these parks to do their homework and small business owners can't reduce costs by running their business from the local swing set."

Residents can locate the free Wi-Fi using signs in each area, which mark the 100 metre radius in which the service works.

Users will be given the option to connect to the free service via a window popping up on their mobile device.
