A TEEN mob has attacked a bus on the Gold Coast, smashing windows and doors with metal bars as terrified passengers and the driver cowered inside.

The group of 25 to 30 youths emerged from the darkness when the bus pulled up at Burleigh Heads about 11.30pm Sunday to pick up passengers.

About 15 passengers and the driver were trapped inside during the violent rampage which lasted several minutes.

Surfside Buslines general manager Les Manson said he had viewed CCTV footage of the incident and had never seen anything like it.

He said the youths had come 'from all directions' and surrounded the bus before 'proceeding to break all the windows and doors'.

"They had some sort of metal bars with them and some of those went right through the windows," he told ABC Radio.

"We can't see any reason for it .... it was just unprovoked."

Mr Manson said the passengers and driver, while not injured, were 'shaken up'.

"It was quite a violent attack on the bus," he said.

"Our driver is very concerned that this sort of attack could happen.

"This is the most bizarre thing I've seen as far as a gang attack on a bus for no particular reason."

It's the latest in a series of incidents involving Surfside Buslines, several of whose drivers have been attacked by passengers including schoolchildren.

The company has been forced to hire security guards to follow buses.

Police are investigating the latest incident.

Poor old 337 - it's one of the newer buses too.

From what I understand they mobbed the bus because they were after somebody who had just hopped on - certainly no more palatable to countenance than a purely random attack but at least they weren't just wandering around targeting public transport in particular.

The fact that they would even do this places everyone in jeopardy.
